  1. I tend to not bring it up. My immediate family and close friends know that I train. If I tell someone it's usually because I find out that they train MA too. I remember when I told my older brother and they responded with kia's and making chopping motions.. Now that I've earned my black belt in karate they are now asking me how to get started in it.
  2. Im 2nd kyu in Shorin Ryu karate. Just starting my journey in the world of BJJ. Usually, when people ask my rank, I just tell them how long I've been training. Its easier and to me rank isn't my goal in MA. Ok, BB is a goal of mine, but its that fact that im on the mat training that really matters to me.
  3. I have nothing but respect for someone who is aprehensive about trying something put their concerns away and just jump into it. I think everyone here was a little nervous before they started thier journey. On the jiu jitsu side, I've been graced to have rolled with some ladies who have taugh me a few lessons.. Some of the fastest arm locks I've ever experiences where from ladies. Like other people mentioned if anyone doesn't want to roll just becasue you are a girl... well, they aint worth your time... As for myself I never think "Oh that girl" I think that girl ROCKS!!!
  4. One of my new favorite quotes, " Never look down on someone, unless you are helping them up." I think that quote also embodies what a true martial artists is. I just wanted to share.
  5. Yeah, no problem. Im 5'9" 160, so i don't feel your pain...lol I never have an issue with things not fitting unless its too big. If s,o a little longer in the dryer does the trick or I get the sewing machine and start hemming.
  6. I've had good luck with Kwon. They have good uniforms that run a bit big. Here is the link http://kwonusa.com/ check it out and hope it helps!
  7. Everyone is entitled to thier opinion and they can spend thier money where they see fit. I have a brother who is homosexual and if someone didn't want to take thier kids to his school because of that they would be missing out on a great person. Who knows maybe one day when I start a school people won't send their kids to my school because I have blue eyes and have a polish last name.
  8. I speak English so I'd perfer them terms in English. In my school we use the japenese names for kicks thats about it..
  9. I will be attending a seminar in Sept. I'm super stoked!!!!!
  10. My style is Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu
  11. My school teaches the same style.
  12. Its really cool that a guy that famous is that humble. I guess we are all the same on the mats, this just goes to prove his points even further.... Nice speech!!!
  13. I think what it shows is how open minded he is. I can't remember who said it but the quote is " A good martial artists has a mind like a parachute. Keep it open you'll do fine but keep is closed it destined for failure."
  14. Keep your head up that was my training session yesterday... I started my kata and then my mind went blank. I stood there with a DUH look on my face. I tend to laugh in those awkward situations and I chcuckled and started over.
  15. It would nice to have a hardcore training day like that. Just to see if I could do something like that. My karate training is about a hour per session, though I would love to make it two hours. I hit the gym and do bag work and katas on off days. Just because you work hard doesn't mean its good training. My old basketball coach would always say, " Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect".
  16. Welcome!
  17. I never wear my glasses. I'm afraid of breaking them.
  18. In my style 1st dan = black belt.
  19. Well, that does suck. It sucks bad. Maybe this will open up other ways to train. Maybe not physical but develop more of your mental game. Set backs like this will definately toughen you up mentally. This would also give you an oppurtunity to read more about the arts you enjoy. These are just thoughts and if in your shoes I would be just as dissappointed as you are. Keep your head and a try to get through this with a positve spirit and keep your health in mind. You only get one body!
  20. Check this out. http://bjjcoach.com/ I've actually contacted him and seems cool. This may be for you.
  21. I love these gis. I orignally purchased a Judo gi and then ended up buying a karate gi and being very pleased... http://www.e-bogu.com/Karate-Uniform-s/206.htm They don't have much of a selection, but they have traditional drawstring. Which I love.
  22. when I'm told to do something that contridicts something another instructor tells me, I simply say I'm doing this way because, "insert Name" told me to do it this way. I let them know that I am now confused. This usually gets all of the instructors to get together and make them decide on the way to do it..
  23. Have you changed your diet since.. One thing I've noticed the older I get the more I sweat.
