  1. Dads can be funny. Your kids will always look back at that and laugh. I had a simliar experience with my father and cutting wood. In northern Michigan it can be cold and the best way to heat in the winter is with wood. Well While we are putting the wood on the back of the truck and with all of the warnings about being careful of the back window. Guess who puts a piece of wood through the window... THE OLD MAN.. I still kid with him about that one. It was like 16 years ago
  2. Its good to see the Shorin Ryu guys. I just got my 6th Kyu and in my school that equals green with white stripe. It's been a fun ride so far and exicted to see what I learn next. Peace OUT!
  3. I love this topic. If I'm blessed with kids, I plan on teaching them everything I know. As for the point scoring thing, I think its overrated. I would teach my children these things for defense purpose and to give them confidence in themselves.
  4. Cool video! I always thought that Kyokushin dudes just pounded on eachother. Where I train we do alot of moving off line for a throw or to counter. Its great to see although slight differences in throughout the world karate, we are all still very similar. On a side note one of my favorite throws and I seen it in this video. Was when moving off line, getting to the back of your oppenent and grabbing the back of his collar and jerking him to the ground. I really like that move.
  5. Tallgeese, I totally understand where you are coming from. Alot of the local gyms that say they are BJJ or JJ are just people who want to do MMA. I know a few people who go to these places and there is alot of ego. Ranking up is nice, but not my major driving force. I want to learn and evolve as a better martial artist. I thought about doing the driving thing and trying to set up something with the nearest training place like every three months. Just doing a check up. I understand that those are your thought and opinions. I asked the question to hear honest answers. Besides you can't be thinned skinned and practice the martial arts..... Right...
  6. This is reasons the I'm seriously considering it. Good instruction from great teachers and ther isn't a Gracie gym for about 100 miles.
  7. You digitally record yourself and training partner going through the testing material. One of the websites I was looking into was the Gracie University. I was impressed with it. I'm a little nervous about trying it for some of the same reasons that were mentioned. I've trained in MA for a year now and want to compliment my striking game with some ground knowledge. If I try it I'll let everyone know.
  8. I'm sure I'm going to open a real can of worms on this one. I was searching for Jiu-Jitsu schools and came across a few online schools. What does everyone think of them? Some of them looked cool and I thought why not, people get Master's degrees online. I guess my ulitimate question is, has anyone done them or had experience with them?
  9. Well said. This is a very good explaination. I've been taught that it is slightly bent with your toes trying to grip the ground. I've tried this with even shoes on and I feel more stable. That is my two cents worth.
  10. How do you train without doing basics or katas?
  11. CTTKDKing, Did you get this from Black Belt magazine? I think I read the same article, I thought it was great also. I really like the part about when things get slow and someone may want to go train at another school. That hits home.
  12. You did the right thing and its not strange with the way you felt. I would have been the same. I think it is quite a honor to have been asked to do it. Your teacher must have seen something in you and your ability.
  13. All great replies... Thanks!
  14. Well, to lighten up the discussion. I live in Michigan where the winters can be cold. When I grow my beard. It keeps the wind off it. It dosen't make me who I am, it just makes me warmer. Though, is it strange when you know someone who has long hair or a beard and they cut it.
  15. Great quotes, probably because I'm a Star Wars nerd. I feel there is a hint of MA in the movie though.
  16. My school. White Yellow / White stripe Yellow Orange / White stripe Orange Green / White stripe Green Blue / White stripe Blue Brown / White stripe Brown Black I kinda like all solid colors, but the stipe thing is growing on me..
  17. I also am studying Shorin Ryu. What I've learned and enjoy is the the use of combos. I also like the block and move to get inside of the oppenent. We also have more of a boxer type of stance.
  18. Great video. It makes me wish there were a Judo school nearby. As for the ultimate martial art, I'm with sensei.
  19. Thats kind of what I was thinking. I just wanted to see what everyone elses was thinking.
  20. There is a theroy that if someone practices and task for 10,000 hours, that person becomes successful (Masters) that task. My question is, does this apply the the world of MA? Let the discussion begin.
  21. I heard there were different types of Aikido. What are they and how are they different? I'm not looking to hear which one is better, because that is all relative. There is a couple of Aikido places near me and trying the weeding out process now. Thanks.
  22. First, Sensei I thought that you retired Now, I want to say great topic My answers according to my brief Karate experience. Questions: 1] Which one is your style's organization a proponent of? Methodology. We have basic standards that one moust follow 2] Which one are you a proponent of? Methodology 3] Which one is your martial art based on? Methodology 4] Which one is your martial arts dependant on? Methodology 5] Are they seperate beliefs? yes 6] Are they said same beliefs? Possibly from the outside. In a martial arts sense one would have to experience it so see if it's one or the other. 7] Are they interchangable? In some cases 8] Can ones belief survive without the other? Yes 9] Can one become a prisoner of either belief? I say yes and the outcome is the same. 10] Does one belief or another truly matter? To the person who devotes their life to the cause it does.
  23. I train at a fairly traditional karate school. I would love to compliment my training with some BJJ or Judo. Unfortunately, there are not any schools that are close to me. I think BJJ gets a bad rep is when I'm surfing Youtube looking for Katas. You see comments on them that a person that pratices BJJ would annihilate anyone that is doind the Kata. (No matter the expereince of the person doing the Kata) I don't get mad, but I do roll my eyes... There is my two cents worth.. Peace out!
  24. I've been at it for about nine months now. I really enjoy it too. I've taken TKD for three months prior to training in Shorin Ryu. I enjoy it so much more than TKD.
  25. That is a very funny example. I find Mr. Lesner a bit more intimading than Ronnie Coleman. I feel I can atleast out run Ronnie Coleman. lol
