  1. Submissions will come, I've been training for a year now and its still overwhelming...lol That being said, the constant mantra from my submission wrestling coach is "position before submission". If you are even alittle bit shaky on your position then that submission just ain't happening or it'll be tougher than it has to be.
  2. Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu guy here. We do Passai Sho. I'm currently working this for my next Kyu (3rd).
  3. I would suggest that you should step up and say something. Part of being a martial artist is standing up for someone who can't. You can't just sit there and let this bullied kid keep getting humliated and his butt kicked.
  4. This has been a good topic and appreicate all of the responses. It is great to how everyone feels on this subject and I'm learning a lot from everyone. Thanks!
  5. I agree with Kuma. Better to hear it from you then from someone else. I doubt that your teacher will give a hard time about it.
  6. Not sure if this topic has been tackled before. I only have experience in two types of striking martial arts. Tae Kwon Do and Shorin Ryu. In my Shorin Ryu teachings I'm taught to make a "Shuri Fist". Now what I'm asking is what other arts use this type of fist. I have a link that provides a great explaination on it. Let me see what you think http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=215
  7. I recently took a break. After my brother passed away though I started to look at things that I really enjoyed doing. I got back into karate in May after a four month break and now I'm not looking back. I stuck with the same school, but I know how you feel about being back. I've even started to help in kids and adult classes even though I'm a 3rd Kyu.
  8. I agree with Wastlander. You may not be looking to franchise (yet) , it will look good to see the same name of a school across town. I'd tend to think that this guys has his stuff together. But that is just my opinion. As for the cool name, change the old name.
  9. Thanks for the input. I've been training in Karate for a little over two years now. Lately I've been just starting to think about things and question techniques, rather than just doing them mindlessly like a robot. I'd like to think its my evolution as a martial artist.... lol I agree with Montana's take, that the inside of the leg and knees are also my targets. If I can disrupt he balance while keeping mine. Yea me!
  10. I would like to see what everyones take is on this subject. In my style of karate though we practice high kicks; we are also reminded that most of our kicks are intended for below the waist or groin. I know there are some talented kickers out there that can perform heads kicks easily. I tend to agree that kicks are better used for below the waist. I just want to see what everone else thinks. Thanks!
  11. Great video. It was great to see how another black belt be open to being corrected. Awesome to see humility. Seeing a person carry themselves like that get me pumped up for training.
  12. We've covered this topic before. In my opinion, I honestly think that you can. There will be a lot of people that would disagree with me, but I honestly think it is possible. I think you can't just watch videos alone. You would need training partners, I think the instruction can come from the internet and a person can become good at the techniques that were taught and use them.
  13. I'd love to try Judo. There are not any schools nearby. I've always enjoyed the sport and it's effectiveness in the self-defense aspect. You are lucky and keep working hard and enjoy your training.
  14. I've been grappling for over a year now. When Im grappling a guy sometime shows up to train (he has very little grappling experience). He lifts weights and he is about 6'3" 225 and I'm 5'9" 165. When I get him on the ground my expeirence pays off and if I don't submit him I can wear him down until he gives up from fatigue. So, sometimes when on the ground they both are the same size.
  15. Training hurt only sets you back further. With a risk of making the injury worse. One of them most important, yet underrated things in the martial arts is injury management.
  16. I train where there are no women intructors, so I do not lean one way or the other. There were women blackbelts, but they choose not to teach. The thought of them teaching does not scare me. I would actually like the different approach that a woman could bring.
  17. I like tallgesse's take on this. Try to smash in with a takedown. Hard to use the kind of speed from thier back.
  18. When I roll I enjoy listening to the Slayer channel on Pandora.
  19. I would love to do something like that. Like everyone time and money is the issue, mostly time.. Have and enjoy the trip!
  20. If this is a martial art then competitive cheer is a martial art.
  21. That was a nice KO. That was a really quick move and right on the button.
  22. I think Sokusen is correct. Just sit in on a class and that will be proof enough. One 30 minute trip isn't going to break the bank and if it is then your budget is probably too tight to train anywhere.
  23. Thanks! I would love to start to incorporate them into my Karate.
  24. Are there any good books that anyone would recommend on wrist locks?
  25. I thinkBunkai is the most important aspect. There are other important things that one can gain from doing Katas. I think the two that are also just as important because they help everything. First, is the fluid movement from one technique to the next and maintaining balance throughout the Kata.
