I shouldn't worry about it too much - all I say is rei, rei, rei some more, and then when you have time rei again. We don't do the "My name is Tobias Reece. I practice Okinawan Kobudo. I represent IOKA UK" etc. We usually laugh when someone does that, because its usually done by the people who spin kick and cartwheel across the floor. Like I mentioned before, don't worry too much about the precise etiquette stuff, as it differs from association to association, club to club. Just don't be a slob, thats all I can say. Present yourself well, and walk with attitude - oh but make sure it is the 'penguin walk' - walking like you are about to rei. I think thats covers enough Regards

Yup, but in the weapons circles entering a competition without sharp gama is a laughable issue. I have no idea why this is - guess its one of those big 'macho' things. But I'm a wuss, so I don't care. MWAHAHA

Think again my friend. Many more 'traditional karate' weapons than this. Now that I agree with. penguin540 - any weapons can be 'better' or 'fun', it just depends on what practice you put in with them. But, since you are asking, I recommend the nunchaku, because for someone like yourself the zai would probably be too boring.

KarateForums.com Survivor 2 - Team Challenge 3 (3)

0015 and I just remembered about this challenge. I decided to do the chivalric thing and not guess - so you'll only see about 3 answers. Time for me to say goodbye I think -
I tried fencing years ago at a sports camp (and I mean years ago), and thought it was pretty cool. Never really thought about it though. Nowdays I think its fantastic, even though I've never picked up a foil, epee or sabre since. I just think fencing is a gentleman's sport/martial art. I've always wanted to check out some Buckler/sword combat, that was apparantly popular in Shakespeare times. But, I've just opened my own kobudo school, so I should really be putting all my concentrating into that - but you never know, I might find a spot for the good old english sword. Any enlightenment with information from Iolair would be good though

Sounds remarkably like Osteochrondritis to me

Aikido Vs Judo..

Oh god...........(enough said) -
Shortstick - sound Ali - Ok, you get an umbrella and I'll get a pair of nunchaku. Vlad - Interesting theory, typical of someone who has no experience in that field. AndrewGreen hit the nail on the head.

That technique is common place in freestyle karate.

How to Start Trouble in a Martial Art Forum

I think there is an important one that you missed out. You should have added: "Anything that Kensai posts" MWAHAHA -
damn right

shortstick My comment was a bit lacking, and I realise that now. It was meant to be a joke. In my style, the nunchaku is a ferocious weapon, capable of powerful combat. At competitions, however, we (my club et al) see a lot of people throwing nunchaku around their heads, necks, groins, feet, as well as holding them very close to the rope. We call this display of fanciness 'twirling'. I understand that you may not have the same teminology as me, so the joke was pretty internal. Hope I didn't offend anyone. Regards

Ah the CCNA - Certified Cisco Network Associate. I know it well..... -
Your English is pretty damn good You may know 1 step as "Ippon Kihon Kumite". Two people face each other is a fighting stance and one attacks. The other person defends and counters. Thats it. No more.
-
You shouldn't be trying to twirl them around

What woudl be better, sword or staff?
Tobias_Reece replied to BKJ1216's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
First figure out what kind of weapon training you want to do - self-defence/modern/traditional etc.. As many ppl out here know, I use the farming implements of Okinawa (stop laughing Kensai!!) -

Hold on a minute - the (e)x-men had to get 100% from everyone to equal the score. Hmmmmm......... -
We base ourselves very much like Shotokan - one hit to end the fight (however unrealised you may think it is) We do a lot of 1 and 2 step, but I'm trying to impliment some free fighting (staffs is easy[relatively speaking], its the zai that I want to people to develop skills in)

Get Mikio Nishiuchis videos and practice the hojoundo. Or alternatively you could message me and I can give you some advice/training exercises. Regards

My guess was just a wild stab in the dark, which is incidentally what I'll be getting if I don't get many questions correct. NB - Patrick did you get my answers. I'm not sure cos the message thingy didn't do what it usually does. -
The whole idea behind doing the Zenkutsu dachi with a block is to uphold the principle of "No first attack in karate" - thats what matters I have done it both ways.
