Tobias_Reece replied to ZeRo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Zero, surely you could have used your sharp metal claws (internal joke) Kensai, you never used your magnetic powers to break a board (anothe internal joke) I, personally, would use my sharp playing cards (my goodness these internal jokes are abundant today) -

Is/Would this weapon be plausible in real life?
Tobias_Reece replied to BeLikeWater's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
BLW The only weapon I can think of that you described is the classic Scimiter (sp?). That is a large weapon with a curved blade. But, I've never played WarCraft 3, so I don't know. Maybe you could give us a link with a pic? Cya -

I have a saying which I stole from someone on this board......... "If you walk the walk, you have to talk the talk" I admire your journey of terminology seeking. However, I think that your instructor is holding you back - anyone who calls their katas "Competition One" and "Basic Two" needs to be.......well......I dunno......can't think of anything thats not too offensive Like everyone else on this board I'm happy to help you with anything you need. Hey - ever thought of starting up Okianwan Kobudo?
-
Speedbird Welcome to the board (I don't I've ever been the first person to say that). Shotokan is know for its deep stances, but if you look in the dojo kun...."Low stances for beginners, high stances for advanced" Many people have interpreted this in a different way - some think that it means "Low stances are for yellow belts and below" whilst others believe it as "Low stances are for everyone except 5th dans upwards" When I trained Shotokan, I always did low stances. The advanced part would be the actual street combat, where I would stand 'normally'. But deep stances being 'old style' is rubbish, and rude, and it spits on everything we preach. You're practising a historical martial art, not Joe Bloggs' "Knock 'em and Sock 'em Shack" (hey I like that name, might have to rename my school ) Anyway, we'll suppose you if u need any help Regards -Tobias

Just like Kensai, I would have to choose my instructor (and friend), Sensei Albie O'Connor. Why? Maybe he hasn't starred in 12 box office movies. Maybe he hasn't won the WKF sparring title. Maybe he hasn't entered NHB fighting and kicked Gracie's ass..............but he has done something a lot more important to me - he inspired/inspires me to continue martial arts. That's important to me.

Its when you sacrafice your advantage to pull of a specific move - for example launching yourself at the enemy without thinking of balance etc. A example of a sacrafice throw is that 'on your back pushing with your feet move' (can't remember the japanese name). When doing this move, you put yourself in a nasty position (on the ground), and you'd better make sure you pull it off or u are up a certain creek without a certain paddle. OK?

(do do doodoo, bum bum ching) Mr. Reece is my name, Nunchaku is my game. I'm taking the time, To make this rhyme. (do do doodoo, bum bum ching) Ok, thats my attempt at MCee-ing. Now back to the topic. Right, about nunchaku and is banningness.... I'm no DCI Meadows, but I'm sure there are actually few weapons banned in England. It is illegal to own handguns etc., but swords etc. are ok. Strange? not really. A kitchen knife can do the same damage as a katana........but I digress. In England nunchaku are NOT illegal. What is illegal, however, is using them in a PUBLIC place. Thats why if you buy a weapon from the local MA shop, the vendor will wrap it up in binliners - plus its also the reason to have weapon cases. All I know is that a few karate-ka and I were co-ordinating a demo for the local green. I happened to point out that it was public property, so I prompted a call to the police. The police said we were correct in contacting them, as it is illegal to do what we were doing. However, they said it was highly unlikely that anyone would procesute us - but for extra 'defence' they recommended that we put up 4 flags and square the area off. This meant that we had a dojo outside - therefore perfectly legal. I believe, however, nunchaku scenes were banned from many many films in the 70s+, which may be your reason for thinking they are banned in England. I hope that babbling has helped you, but before I finish......Where in England are you from? If you fancy learning kobudo I'm sure we could sort something out.
