Hey I happen to be on a Red tea kick (excuse the wording) lately. Although we all know the benefits of drinking Green tea, (it contains a powerful anti-oxidant called polyphenol which are currently being linked to anti-cancer and anti-heart diseases) ... but so does black tea! Here are some facts about tea: All types of tea, including both green and black tea come from the same evergreen shrub(Camellia sinensis). While black tea is fermented, green tea is not. Fermentation changes the the chemical structure of the tea leaf and allows key flavor characteristics to emerge. Because green tea is not fermented, it has one-third the caffeine per cup as black tea. In general, the different degrees in processing results in green tea polyphenols being more potent in anti-cancer activities than black tea polyphenols. So what is Red tea? It contains Jamaican sorrel (a Hibiscus flower) and sorrel hinders the conversion of normal cells into cancer cells, lowers blood pressure, boost immune activity and reduces fevers associated with infections (the FLU). http://www.vitalbotanicals.com/prodsearch.asp OR http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/herb/rz.jhtml

The Asian Journal of Martial Arts
KickChick replied to taebot's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I too have read several articles from the JAMA ... Although not too much written pertaining to the Korean arts (plenty on Chinese & Japanese!!) , I have enjoyed some health related articles. The Journal of Asian Martial Arts. Via Media Publishing Co. 821 West 24th Street, Erie, PA. 16502. A high-quality academic style journal featuring articles dealing with various martial arts, including Taijiquan. Online: http://www.goviamedia.com/ -
I can offer a whole bunch of "ideas" (this was really my area of expertise in college) but the tried and true methods that have worked at our school so far are: Web Page (offering web discount for classes) Small article appearing weekly in newspaper mentioning the web site Having student black belts teach afterschool TKD program in the area schools. (usually they run for 8 weeks) Many come into the school to continue with formalzed training. Buddy Program (similar as to what monkeygirl described) We have done others but these have shown reslts for our school. We also offer Cardio kickboxing too that we have also advertised in this way.

First .... let me welcome you to KarateForums and thank you for turning to us to help you in making this life-changing decision set before you. Second of all, I believe all the members above have offered you some very good advice based on their own experiences and knowledge... but in the end it is, of course, --- YOU that makes the decision. But you have already taken the first step in realizing that you have to make a change in your lifestyle .... both mentally & physically! Martial arts training can offer both. Thirdly, .... I like your honesty. Your post was the last post I read before going to sleep last night. It shown through .... along with an honest desire to better yourself. Just having that desire is the first step in achieving motivation .... but you need to retain that throughout your training. There will be times when you will say "I can't" ... It took say 12-15 years for your body, mind & spirit to become what it is today and you won't "notice" a change overnight.... although you might feel "better" about yourself. ... and fourthly (and I do hope I am not coming across as "lecturing" to you ) ... along with starting karate you will also need to focus on exercising on your own and nutrition (I hate the term "dieting" ... diets don't work!) Train on your own in order to get yourself into better shape. Just taking karate classes will not do it all. A brisk walk ... some stretches, crunches and light weightlifting with dumbbells will burn off some fat and get that sluggish metabolism going! Eat better .... stay away from the "bad" food (you know what that is!) Eat smaller meals several times a day. No eating past... say 6:00 at night. All these lifestyle changes will help .... notice I say "lifestyle" , you need to make an "about face" and don't look back!! Remember ... everything in MODERATION!! I can sense it in your post that you are more than serious and I praise you for your honesty. Do go ahead and take those free lessons .... what do you have to lose? You have so much more to gain by trying. Martial arts may not be what you are looking for.... but how will you know if you don't try. You have the opportunity .... open the door it's knocking! Go through our Health & Fitness Forum for some tips on losing fat, exercise, gaining flexibility .... and you will also notice that several other members have been in your situation at one time. Check back with us please.... and good luck to you!

I think that link pretty much covers the different exercises for the chest.

"The refs ruled correctly that New York had an ineligible receiver downfield. But they did not throw a flag when Rich Seubert was yanked to the ground as he tried to catch a pass after the Giants bungled the field-goal attempt." http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/sports/RTGAM/20030107/wnfloff/Sports/sportsBN/breakingnews-sports What a rip-off!!

Hi Katana! Welcome! You will find quite a few women here that can offer you some insight and guidance in your search ... not that the guys are slouches either ) Try this http://www.jenniferlawler.com/which_martial_quiz.html This quiz focuses only on four martial art styles that are readily available everywhere. Ms. Lawler has written several books geared toward women in the martial arts which you may be interested in reading. http://www.jenniferlawler.com/books.html I for one began my martial art training in Tae Kwon Do at age 33 to develop all the same things you mentioned! And let me tell you, it has worked for me! Good Luck to you and if you require any further info feel free to email me!

Welcome to the club ... taebot! ... Hey do us a favor and stop by Introductions forum and introduce yourself further. (I have enjoyed reading your posts today and have gotten somewhat of an idea of what type of martial artist you are besides knowing that you're a fellow TKD'ist )

Actually I just heard this morning that when The New York Times reported Strummer's death they had Mick Jone's (from The Clash) picture inserted. Just so happens that when The New York Post discovered this "mistake".... they took it upon themselves to blast the Times for their misinformation (they are rival newspapers... the Post feels the Times is not "hip" enough when it comes to music & entertainment). When doing so the Post reported how the NY Times printed a pic of Mick Jones instead of Joe Strummer they in fact printed (along with this report on the mistake that the Times made)a pic of Mick Jones from the band Foreigner and not from The Clash.

you may have to do ALOT of deep breathing *cough* *gag* ... and Hindu squats are really for developing leg strength and balance. Actually, check out "Left pectorial bigger than the right?" thread here in the Helath & Fitness forum. I mentioned a few sites there you may find helpful in building more mass. Without weights you say? http://www.muscleandfitness.com/mf/weider/061802/bodyweightex1_2.html

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/pecs.htm Here you will find alot of real good exercises (animated videos too) .... using weights is the ideal way to build the pec region but doing various variations of push ups incorprating dynamic tension (do your push-ups nice and slow while flexing hard your pectorals) can also foster chest muscle growth -- (one-arms, incline, decline, hand out, close-grip, wide-grip... they can also be done between chairs, this was the favorite exercise of Charles Atlas. Another variation is dips between parallel bars.
