"To reach the peak of victory, one must climb the mountain of defeat" ... in other words, The road to success is paved with failure..... not many people achieve success without enduring long periods of failure and defeat. The real "winner"is the one who is able to persevere in spite of their fear and learn from their failures and defeats.

The name "Karate" is used almost generically to describe many different types of hand and foot combat. There are many styles and substyles of karate including the ones you mentioned and shorin ryu, kyokushin ryu and ashihara karate among others. I mean someone started a thread here about calling their art (which is Tae Kwon Do) "karate".... I mean a "better" generic "term" would be "martial art" for schools to use in advertising if they happen to have a curriculum that comprises several styles ... but, true I have seen many schools use "karate" in their title because the public has a better conception of that "word". ... but I could be wrong More on TS here ... http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/blackbelt/1999/jun99/tig.html ...seems its been said thatSchulmann's schools are a prime example of where the martial arts in America are headed... ok enuff said!

"You are no more armed because you are wearing a pistol than you are a musician because you own a guitar." - Jeff Cooper If you're talking "practicality" here ... then obviously the weapon has to be available to you at the moment of attack. A practical weapon is one that is available to you without being obvious to your attacker. The only weapon that I carry is a kubotan attached to my enormous set of keys ... quite the weapon and legal (at least in my area) You can target the sternum, ribs, and chest including the face, armpits, collarbones, neck, groin, and basically anywhere else where nerve endings are fairly unprotected by muscle. You can use to hold or escort someone into a lock/hold position. Whether it be to give them a jab in order to open them up for a hold to be applied, or to increase the incentive for the target to comply in a compliance hold situation. Pretty practical.

http://quiz.ravenblack.net/videogame.pl http://quiz.ravenblack.net/videogame/15.png I am Kung Fu Master. (.... who me???? .... what a surprise that was!)) I like to be in control of myself. I dislike crowds, especially crowds containing people trying to kill me. Even though I always win, I prefer to avoid fights if possible.

Like I mentioned on another thread.... martial artists are human... and sometimes we forget that fact. We are affected maybe moreso by defeat because we are conditioned to rise above such obstacles. With the quote I referenced above.... you struck a nerve personally for me. I am still dealing with the emotional upset of having my purse snatched, not being able to catch the assailant, and not having the chance to apply my skills (so-to-speak) .... Now this didn't bring my world crashing down around me but I was somewhat dismayed that this could happen to me... how???? .....but I am far from arrogant and very mentally disciplined. Just human I suppose .

Preventing that ground fight.
KickChick replied to Kensai's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
IMO a large percentage of fights go to to the ground due to the poor execution of stand up techniques rather than the actions taken by your attacker. Let's put it this way 100% of altercations start standing up so shouldn't we spend most of our training here? I believe that Rorion uses the "90% of all fights end up on the ground" as a marketing ploy and it really isn't substantiated with any concrete evidence. If you do find yourself on the ground (and have no grappling exp.) you should be able to strike effectively and throw your attacker off you using the concepts of leverage (the ground), fulcrum and momentum. The goal when on the ground is not simply to get up but to attack sufficiently to have the time, distance and ability to get back up.... or run! The best way to prevent ground fights? Don't fight with anyone shorter than yourself! People shorter than you tend to want to take it to the ground. -
bad things about being a martial artist
KickChick replied to Molson style's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
First and foremost people seem to forget that you are only human ..... and sometimes we do too! Aside from that, ... injuries are the sucky part! -
Okay.... you didn't ask for this monkeygirl ...(and I don't know how receptive you are to advice from your parents) .... but do listen to them when it comes to your driving. My son got his license last November after drivers education, drug & alcohol training classes and 4 months of driving with a learners permit (road instruction). With our help (he is paying us back!) he bought himself a nice (perfect condition Nissan Altima GXE) ... Insurance is so high that he has liability only and no collision.... so we told him to drive safely. Sure you cannot help how other people drive, but you need to be aware. You may drive fine but there are alot of jerks on the road! 4 days later he rear ended the car in front of him (car in ront of him stopped short) ... who just happened to be a friend of his from school.$1,000.00 damage which isn't covered. 2 days after that.... speeding ticket for $167.00 Listening to your parents telling you to slow down and not go so fast... --- priceless! ..... here's your "driving guardian angel"

All martial arts involve a combination of physical skills, mental focus. While a certain amount of anxiety can be motivating and a positive force, ...self-doubt, defeatism, folding under pressure, and choking are negative qualities many martial artists possess ...which they should call attention to and correct. For example, a young man who I once trained with (a black belt in TKD) went on to college Columbia University (I believe for neuro surgery) was always a "perfectionist" in his training and this carried over to his personal life and his college studies also. Unfortunately he messed up his shoulder in an accident which curtailed his sparring bouts and spinning kicks and entering future tournaments but he continued to train at the university in the TKD club doing the best he could (and let me say he was awesome). He couldn't maintain his straight A's in college as he did in high school. I have fond memories of him because he always encouraged me when I felt I wasn't achieving my own personal best. Well, this young man committed suicide several days before his 21st birthday. Many have said that he just couldn't "deal" with trying to be the best at everything (TKD and schooling and social activities) .... Although I do agree very much with Kenpo123 ... somethimes it is best to accept the things you cannot change ...while you do not want to stop improving and reaching your goals, you should have expectations that are in conformity with your conditioning, skills, and experience. Explosive anger, paranoia, depression, avoidance behavior, obsessive compulsiveness, etc. are common types of behavior found in sports-related training.... which can also negatively affect you in and out of the dojo.

Writing Contest Winner Revealed!
KickChick replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Competition was tough .... .... cant' wait to read the award winning article! -
Yes, an interesting question. The majority of those who enter the martial arts do so for a variety of reasons but psychologically, training in the martial arts reduces tension and anxiety. We learn to control our aggression and vent our hostility and frustration in a more beneficial manner. I believe the martial arts is a psychological leveler. Those with quick tempers learn control while those who are timid and shy learn to be more assertive when needed. Some do not make it through their training. I'm sure many schools have their share of "drop-outs" for whatever reason .... they just couldn't hang in there! It's alot of dedication ...physically & mentally. You learn that self-discipline means doing things correctly and not looking for the easy way out. I don't think it needs to be scientifically proven but it is a given that physical development also helps develop self-confidence.
