I recently took a weekend SD instructional workshop conducted by our police dept. which consisted of personal safety, rape prevention training, kubotan training, and CAST (confined area survival training which is comprehensive defensive training for travel on planes, trains and buses. Many of the officers were trained in Shotokan actually but basically all had basic SD /close quarters training ie. takedowns, pressure points, wrist locks ...

Bravo John ... Freestyler, much of what you have posted is of course your opinions and you are entitled to them.... and yet they are generalizations (much of what anyone can read if they pop onto any JKD site). I fight full contact, and have crosstrained in various self defense/close qtr techniques ... I feel confident in my abilities and maybe for you "the fight" is what drives you in your endeavor in the "martial arts", for some of us it may something else. There is nothing wrong with tradition ... hey you wouldn't be here without it!

Tae Kwon Do vs Hap Ki Do
KickChick replied to lara_ela's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
True, you will find similarities within the Korean arts and even within the styles of TKD for that matter ... 'cept for tactics, strategies, forms(hyungs) and self defense techniques which may vary in their instruction. It all depends on just what you are looking for and what is available to you in your area. When article section is launched here soon you will see an article about the many styles within the style of TKD. ... -

Tae Kwon Do vs Hap Ki Do
KickChick replied to lara_ela's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
...since you have taken TKD (for some time you say) then you should know a bit about that. Well although both are Korean martial arts, Hapkido is unique among the modern Korean martial arts in that it emphasizes deflection as opposed to forceful blocking. Hapkido is known for its extensive arsenal of joint-locks, throws and advanced kicking techniques.... Ki (internal energy) development exercises are commonly taught. Kicking and punching drills, self-defense applications with a partner are practiced and the advanced student of Hapkido commonly trains with various weapons including the sword, the staff, the short staff, and the cane. You say lara_ela, you got lazy ... or bored or disinterested??? You cannot be lazy when training in martial arts ... maybe you need to try several classes in several different styles (Korean, Japanese, Chinese...) in order to find one that captures your interest .. entirely. -

aw, c'mon you guys ... you don't like the show??? Don't most people enjoy watching certain people out there that would do just about anything ( I mean ANYTHING!) for 50 thousand dollars. I'm sorta happy & content where I am, with what I got after watching them down a couple shots of some cow vile after chewing up a dozen slugs. There is only so much I would do for $$$ .... not that I am fearful or anything Yeah, definitely mind over matter.... or hard up for cash! -
.... hey you may be on to something there ZR.... instead of wearing the traditional lamp shade on my head this year I may just opt for the new age copper hat Last week I did something to my wrist ... actually bent my fist too far forward while doing a hook punch to the bag and ...&%$#@BOING this large bump on the top of my wrist protruded out. (the area around where the dial of your watch would be on your wrist but a little lower) It was a little sore so after reading this post I had a copper bracelet and wore it on my wrist for a few days. The pain is gone but I still have the lump which gets bigger everytime I just punch the bag. I'm thinking it may be a calcium deposit (?)

...I'll have to check out the article. Thanks for posting! I know he has been the color commentator at some UFC events. He also had a starring role on NewsRadio where he played Joe Garelli, the resident electrician at WNYX Radio. He also recently released a comedy album on Warner Bros. Records titled “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday.” He earned his black belt at 15 with just two years of training. He was also the Massachusetts full contact tae kwon do champion four consecutive times. By the age of 19, he won the U.S. Open Tae Kwon Do Championship, and as the lightweight champion, he went on to beat both the middle and heavyweight title-holder to take home the Grand Championship. Not bad! ...(looking either! ) -
was it hard starting out?

You can find some more answers regarding different "approaches" to attract prospective students here in this thread http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3222&start=0 You must keep a broad marketing approach .. although monkeygirl suggested concentrating on children (largest market) that market also tends to fluctuate throughout the year. Our school has ten new adult students, some who have crossed over from our fitness kickboxing classes... another good approach to acquiring students. -

No problem I'll answer your question Don. Because I have a few questions regarding my personal usage of a firearm: Will I carry it all the time? Will it be immediately available when I need it? Do I have legitimate confidence in my ability to use it? Could it be taken away and used on me? Am I physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to use it? When I can answer YES to all of the above then I may consider it. But for now I can answer YES to the above when it comes to a self defense "gadget".

The presence of copper in the body has been known for centuries, yet our bodys need for copper has not received the same emphasis as other popular minerals like iron and zinc. When you take into account the fact that copper is used by essentially every cell in the body, it doesn't make sense that its healing qualities have not been better received in the modern medical field. Early medical practices touched on these findings and used certain copper applications such as copper containing ointments and bracelets to treat painful joints and muscles. These medical practices have been abandoned by the modern medical field Don't forget bio-magnetic healing too (wearing magnets). Linus Pauling, received a Nobel Prize for his discovery of the magnetic properties of hemoglobin in the blood. He found that iron, in addition to its other functions, plays an important role in cell metabolism. Iron, and many electrolytic salts in our blood circulate bio-magnetically. In light of these discoveries, it has been found that the remote effect of magnetic flux on the body involves the iron in the bloodstream and its ability to be magnetized. This magnetization results in an acceleration of circulation and the transfer of negative (bio-north) energy to all areas of the body. Research and studies in Japan and India have found that wearing magnetic bracelets relieved shoulder pain in more than 70% of those tested. http://www.healingwithcopper.com/magnetpage.html Hey if it works (whether its in your mind or not) ... who cares!!

Husband doesn't like me studying Karate
KickChick replied to KarateMom's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have been meaning to share this article with all the "karate moms" out there .. (and to all you future moms) and to all of you who have a MOM .... this seemed to be the best place to post it (so karatemom can see it and share this also with her husband!) It is about "moms" in general really ... brought a tear to my eye ......... Spirit of the Tiger: Sensei Mom (Copyright ã 2001 Paul Turse All Rights Reserved) "Do you think your mom is cool? Does she wear shades? Well, moms are not cool because they may wear sunglasses. Moms are cool because they are moms and because they have the spirit of the tiger within them. Have you ever watched the Discovery Channel or the Animal Planet? If so, you may have seen a show where the world of the tiger was explored. You must have noticed that it is the tigress, or the female tiger, that looks out for the cubs and teaches them all that they need to know in order to survive in the jungle. And sometimes when a cub does not pay attention or wanders off to a dangerous location, she may have to go after it and take the cub by the scruff of the neck and carry it back to the safety of the den. Now the cub does not cry or have a hissy fit because it has been punished and has been grounded for a while. All cubs take their licks like real tigers. And when they are threatened by a larger predator, they are not too proud to call mom for help, and they have no problems with letting her fight their battles for them. That is why they eventually survive to one day become strong enough to fight their own battles. Now it would seem to me that if tiger cubs are that intelligent, than young humans should be at least smart enough to understand and appreciate the guidance that their moms have to offer. All the insurmountable problems you may be facing now are nothing new to your mom. Believe it or not, your mom has been there and back dozens of times in her lifetime. She has been out in the human jungle and has survived and has been successful. In fact you are living proof of her accomplishments. Your mom is just as much a teacher as the tigress. When she roars you need to listen In fact, your mom is a sensei. What! you say. But my mom doesn't know judo or karate, you protest. Well, the word sensei does not necessarily mean a martial arts teacher. The word comes from two ; characters, or symbols that form the Japanese language: sen (before) and sei (life); thus the word means before life. In other words, anyone who has lived longer than someone else and who passes on all the knowledge (and not just martial arts) that she has acquired to a younger person is a sensei. Your martial arts sensei may only be able to help you to become good at judo or karate, but your mom will be able to teach you how to achieve success as a person in life. And if you are a guy, dont be ashamed to develop a close relationship with your mom. Some of the greatest and strongest men in the world had close ties with their moms. There is nothing sissy about that. In fact, the fifth football player to be drafted into the NFL this year, LaDainian Tomlinson from Texas Christian University, has a tattoo of his inspiration, his mom, whose face he proudly displays on his shoulder for all to see. I also know, from my own personal experience, that my mom was my best buddy, and I am not afraid to proudly admit it. Some of you are no doubt impressed when you see some of your super-star sports figures play in a game when they are injured or hurt. But dont forget many of them are so filled with painkillers that they may not feel any pain. Besides they are playing in front of millions of fans and making as many dollars in the process. You may not know the pain that your mom may be experiencing as she goes through her daily chores, not with a field goal in mind, but with your well-being as her prime objective. And she does all of this for you, her one and only fan, very often unrecognized and un-rewarded. And while she may not be famous, it takes more courage to be just a plain ole mom, one without sunglasses. Besides, if she were wearing sunglasses, you would not be able to see the love and pride shining in her eyes when she looks at you. One day when you are successful and you look back upon your life, you may come to realize that the correct choices you have made and the courage you have found within to cope in the human jungle may not have come from your martial arts teacher but really from Sensei Mom." Now how cool is it that you are a mom and in fact do train in martial arts!
