5 year old black belt in India?!?!
BDPulver replied to isshinryu5toforever's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've met some practicioners from india a long time ago. Isshinryu is a big influence there. Traditional isshinryu is the 8 open and 7 weapon. The added now is kama, nunchuku, bo-bo and bo-sai. -
I'll have to agree with sensei on this also. One thing I've tried to avoid and this is going back to my teacher is contracts. One should not be bounded to study a style if they find out a few classes later its not for them. And like someone else said, some of the good schools dont really list all that much. Before the internet and all this tech stuff. I found my school by word of mouth way back when. It was in the basement of a building at that time and since then I never regretted it. Also like someone else mentioned, if they call back and offer a sit in with participation for a few classes those are the ones I like to attend first. They are usually the most informant on what they are doing.

Well everyone else pretty much summed it up best. Only thing I will add is to keep your knees slightly bent. Its normal for the leg to went to straighten out and is the one problem alot of new students to MA find. Takes practice and patience but you will get there.

I keep thinking of terminator comeing alive

I think you missed what I was saying. The older guy that was at this tournament used his head in that, he threw straight forward punches, maybe a hook kick but he kept'd his sparring looking basic and won. The kid he fought wanted to show off by throwing the most flashy techniques to try and score faster. Age won with wisdom.

Ditto. since I moved to this new area I noticed it more. Had my little angel with me one weekend and we where standing in line and just bluntly out of the blue she goes Daddy why is this woman in the 20 items or less line, she cleary has like 30 items or more. Gotta love a 9 yr old innocent. I did feel embarassed but not as embarassed as that person and the cashier couldnt help but laugh.

Bushido and DWX summed it well. We had a student was sortof this way also. What we did was always changed the format of the class when he came. Tried to always have something different going untill they get use to it. Once our student hit purple was when he felt comfortable and his attention quickly fixated to karate and not around the room. Its tough but sacrifices are good.

Kathy Long to step into MMA
BDPulver replied to bushido_man96's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I use to follow her career when she was fighting when I was younger. Saddened when I heard she retired from kickboxing then kinda skeptical on her new move with mma. Glad to hear though on her first bout she won. Hopefully I'll get to see her fight again. She really puts on a great show. -
Believe it or not but some of the best techniques can be your basics or Kihon. You dont want to get to fancy with a move that has to be presented almost flawlessly. I remember watching a tournament and it was the finals for the grandmaster. The two black belts that where fighting had almost a 20+ yr spread on ages. The older one just threw the basic techniques while the younger one was trying to woo and wow the crowd with techniques I wouldnt dare to use. The older guy won. I was judgeing this and I think the best part about the whole match was the older guy while shaking hands with the young guy said to him - doesnt matter how flashy your moves are, how fast you can throw them as long as you know what your hitting and can hit it you'll always win.

I use 4 different types. A straight one for bo kumite, tapered for practicing, a slightly skinnier, lighter tapered for tournament and demos and a modified bo where i cut a foot off each end for practicing in my apartment or using as a demo as a cane, broomstick, so forth. Mainly its up to the instructor/school as well on what types, but just like a few mentioned, it should be close to your height as much as possible.

Like the prong part of the sai in your gut story. People still question me on that. -
Cryptologist Cracks 200 Year Old Code in Letter to Jefferson
BDPulver replied to Patrick's topic in General Chat
Thats cool, I use to be big into code breakers when younger. Brings up a little history here. The codes that was used during WWII by the navaho still have not been broken. -
Yeah for a 12-13 yr old seeing her is the most majestic site. I remember going up to the crown twice. Torch was blocked off and untill now never knew why. Being on the boat to reach the island though seeing her gave me a deja vu on what my great grandparents reaction mustve been like seeing her also.

Weapons training vs. Doctor
BDPulver replied to baldwin11's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Same here, my style teaches weapons and when people see me use them they think I'm practicing some ancient mystical martial art cause they are so use to tae kwon do here. I have been approached by numerous officers and asked what style i study and if i would teach them. -
man it makes me wish i kept'd my old school pics of the miss liberty. Cant remember what year we had our school trip to her though. think it was 83 but not sure.

sensei8 beat me on the answer. Pretty much any weapon is diffucult to learn wield. Even the most basic one can be hard to learn.

Had to think bout this awhile but after reading tallgeese and bushido I would have to agree with them. We still teach wrist release and grabs and different scenarios where one might encounter such a grab. They are a good starting point for joint manipulation and getting the student to realize that MA is not all striking and kicking. It's true you might never run into a situation where someone would by chance grab your wrist but if you look at it on the other spectrum here. For example, you know how to get out of one. You run into a situation where you might have to put one on a attacker. You already know the pro's and con's on which way is the best to control the situtation if it gets that far or maybe the encounter just started but you where able to apply it before they knew what happened. Cross arm bars and such come to mind where a simple lock and quick joint manipulation comes in where you now control the individual. I know alot would question this but its one of those scenarios if you act and get it under control fast you now have the person in the wrist grab and since you know the releases you can place it in a way they cant release so y ou have them.

I'm with the old timers here. been doing ma since 8 now 38. Getting rdy to look into opening my school if all goes well. I'd probably wouldve stayed in the army. So in that, I probably would've picked something up. Not sure, never really crossed my mind.

Be Happy You're Even Training!
BDPulver replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I been going through my apartment trying to figure out what to pack and get rid of. Trying to get a transfer to another system mainly to be closer to my daughter. So havent had much time to train like I was. I'm looking forward to it if I get the transfer though. Went to the area I'll be at hopefully and looked around and didnt see much of a MA school so might be good opportunity for me to open a school. -
I'm a big guy also. 6'1" 250. Pretty much I did alot of bike riding (mountain biking actually). Some running and light weight training. Had a fellow black belt once didnt think I was fast cause of my size. Proved him wrong, he was really amazed at how fast I could leg sweep him and follow up. The biggest thing to make sure you see your doctor also to make sure you can be that strenous on your body. I was having chest pains once and turned out to be just my body trying to adapt to the new excersise I was doing. But I see my doc every chance I get anyways. She also studies MA so she knows what I put my body through. My previous doc thought I was overdoing it. So make sure you get one that understands athelics.
