  1. well my gift was spending it with my daughter. She got me a bunch of scratch offs (didnt win though).
  2. Drunken Master and Legend of Drunken Master are my 2 classic Jackie Chan flicks.
  3. Being a student/teacher of isshin ryu myself some of the books that use to be out are no longer out. Ive been studying the art for over 25yrs, attained my ranks and still see my teacher when I can. The problem with learning from a book, sometimes the way the author describes it might seem confusing so you try it how you interpid it. Then you meet someone that studies the style by a instructor and sees the mistakes. The other problem is not every school does it the same. I'm part of the IWKA which tries to keep the teachings as close to shimabuku as possible. My teachers sensei is Mr. Duessel who trained under Tatsou and was the last one to train under him before he died. So he keeps looking over his old notes and movies to make sure he is doing the particular art to how Tatsou taught it. I will say this though, if you need to look for books you might have to check ebay, I think they where written by harold long. Theres 3 of them. When I can find and paste it, I'll get his website cause he has some useful info.
  4. and I thought mine was a bit outlandish. Lord of the Rings Trilogy All star wars movies (including cartoons) Harry Potter
  5. I was in metal shop in high school. Made a aluminum set of nunchuk's, sai's out of brass and ninja hand and feet climbing claws. the chuk's where too heavy even being made out of aluminum. the sai's weld broke when I was trying a technique. and the claws. well.......we will just say ouch with a few swear words. Only thing that seemed to work good was the chinese version i made of the throwing dart.
  6. wow, never thought i had its own page on wikia. Thanks Patrick. Boy the memories and nights i can go on bout that road and lake. Even some stories I know that are not on that page.
  7. There's a road down from my parents in NJ, great meadows to be exact that has history on it. Name of the road is called Shades of Death. What makes it even more unique is a lake on it that is called Ghost Lake.
  8. I remember my first time. I was scared to death. Didnt know if i had to bow like they did in the movies. How the training was going to be. Fast forward 30yrs now. I'm still learning and get nervous occassionally. Its the cycle of life. Dont let it get to you. I was 14 when i started the 2nd time and I was still nervous. And dont worry bout belt ranks, I wasnt. I was just more excited to be in a school i liked. So there is some here that has gone through 1 school some 2 , 3, 4 etc.... Nice thing is we all feel that way when we decide to start over.
  9. Lol , Shizentai i was thinking of either dragonball, narutu or that other one when i read that. thats a classic
  10. We had a student also with a weak heart. We had to be careful with her cause she was so young. Her doctor actually recommended MA to strengthen it which it did do. Only thing I can recommend is maybe wear a chest protector as a precaution so nothin serious happens.
  11. There's that style in the new batman movies (name of it slips my memory) where elbows are used instead of punching. I looked it up when movie first came out and its a very street type MA and looked very effective.
  12. I so want to see it but its not a movie I can take my daughter too. Will probably have to wait when it comes out. from most of the reviews and trailers I've seen I kinda put up with the old classic enter the ninja flicks.
  13. whenever I would help students out on punching a human target I would usually have them hit me in the gut. I had one go, mister pulver how am I to hurt you with a belly like that?? I looked at him sternly for a moment and just said I'm in the next phase of training for buddha. He had a blank look on his face and one of the other black belts heard it came over started to rub my so call belly and said Now we all have good luck.
  14. Isshinryu is a very straight forward combat oriented style in a manner of speaking. Depending on the teacher depicts how it is taught. We use kicks for a distance and extension of ourselves. Locks of all sorts to end the confrontation as quickly as possibly. There is more but at the moment I cant think of it.
  15. welcome
  16. man I got a list now. Mentalist V NCIS Mythbusters (still) Sanctuary Dexter Star Wars the clone wars Eureka And whatever looks interesting on history channel
  17. the 2nd video is the one we do. I dont think I've ever seen that first one at a tournament (yet). And I was screaming at my laptop watching it too.
  18. After thinking it for awhile, I was going to say kama but then it dawned on me what my teacher said and seeing what Rich just posted. Hardest weapon to train is oneself. Too many variables involved with weapons. But with oneself, only you know how you work.
  19. Yes you can show youtube.com videos I'd like to see the tweaked version (i'll probably be screaming at my laptop later on it ) hehe
  20. welcome
  21. my best friend and teacher and some of our black belts got invited to okinawa by by master shimabuku last year. they are planning another trip next year I think. Even though not really related he said it was the best experience he ever had. I'm hoping to join them next year for it.
  22. I read Wagner's articles in BB all the time. Some in a sense tick me off, others he comes straight forward on how it is. I wouldnt take alot of his analogies with a grain of salt though. He's informant on reality based fighting but no clue on traditional ma. He's pretty much one of those that thinks all MA should be able on his reality fighting. If it dont fit it needs to be discarded type philosphy. I cant remember the issue, I might have it around. It has him sorta apoligizing but not really to the MA community.
  23. Here's how we use to do it. We use to donate rank by gi color. Sho Dan was white Ni Dan black bottom/white top San Dan white bottom/black top Yon Dan black/black Go Dan back to white But as we got more students it wasnt viable so we started putting stripes on the belts to designate rank. Only thing that changed was during our official IWKA tournaments in respect you wore a clean black belt and white gi.
  24. i agree with ya patrick, im almost 40 and all i remember is Mr T one.
  25. very different from what i study of chatan yara no sai kata.
