  1. We have 2 sets of ranks, one for the kids and other for adults. Kids: white white yellow stripe yellow orange green (1,2) purple (1,2) brown (3,2,1) black Adults: white yellow green (1,2) brown (3,2,1) black red/white red
  2. Not real familiar with boxing but some of the boxers I've trained said they they wished they had what you call punchbag mitts. When we do heavy bag training its usually bareknuckles so they would always gripe about sore hands.
  3. I'm looking for some jewelry. I found this web in BBmag, has anyone ever ordered from it. http://www.trhawkinson.com/ Some of the others I found were either a bit more pricey or didnt have what I was looking for really. Anyone order from somewhere else?? I'm trying to find isshinryu type class ring and/or pendants.
  4. He made a friend ??
  5. Doesnt matter to me what its called, I will say it does hurt (a lot). We would get in the occassional police/statey to train so they didnt have to go to some class they would tell me bout. I was the guinea pig on more then one demostration on the PR24/tonfa in class.
  6. FIrst I've heard of em Traymond. Got site saved so i can look closer later, I might if price is right
  7. I use to deal in comics a long time ago, I have one still in my collection that goes for bout $1000.00 Just never had intentions on selling it yet (waiting for it to go up more).
  8. some people have way too much time on there hands LOL
  9. Same here Traymond. We train bo first to build not only the proper strength but timing as well. Also to get use to have something in your hands since the first part of your learning is empty hand.
  10. after reading everyone elses, it makes ours look more laxed on testing students.
  11. I started off using closed but as the years and training went on. I grew to using open more now. I find i can transmit just as much power with a open hand block as a closed fist block for starters. Also, I can do certain techniques with ease using a open hand (ie. grab and pull). I even learned how to block against kicks after many many sprains and broken fingers. When training students though I try to use a closed fist so they learn open yet. Its tough though when ya started on something that feels more comfortable.
  12. It's funny, the only time you know your being tested is for black belt. Other then that, almost all our promotions are surprises for the student.
  13. Sheesh, 80 controllers?? I'd hate to be his parents if I had to keep buying em. I saw a little of it on the morning news but they didnt eleborate it too much on there.
  14. Right now what I'm doing is researching our bo katas and changing some of the techniques that might be better suited for use with the kai. This is pretty much my own thing and hoping to get it introduced to our style as a option weapon. Straight Kai atm, I am looking into get a angel'd one soon.
  15. as an ex rock climber. I use to use chalk but like someone else said it gets very messy. it does get rid of the sweaty palm syndrome quick. I found using a rosin bag to be better though, and even a stress relieve bag works too long as it is the fabric type.
  16. It's part of my style but does not have to be taught. Mainly Tatsou introduced Sai, bo and tonfa. He left it open for others to introduce more. My sensei's teacher introduced Kama and from my understanding also nunchaku. Lately, I've been exploreing others like the kai (oar) and a few others that slip my mind at the moment.
  17. Pretty much what Joesteph said. The open hand guard with looking for witness's is the best approach. As far as when to consider the time to defend, my teacher always had us do a imaginary circle around us. Typically about 3 feet all around. If the intruder invades that 3 foot space then you know its going to be a confrontation. We sometimes would train to stay within that 3 foot distance, its tough but is doable.
  18. Thats a good question Tallgeese and at the moment I'm kinda stumped now. I know I am guilty of the thats how I was taught mentallity but also I was taught to try different things also.
  19. hmmm.......interesting to say the least.
  20. In my line of work I have to talk to strangers all the time. So seeing a conversation like that.....hmmm, not too sure. Normally I try to ignore and do my job if I can but I have probably done the same thing as you.
  21. Glad to hear hapkido princess
  22. Still Black Belt since my first issue back in 1979, I was 8 or 9 and begged my mom to get it for me. I wish some of the others where still out, cant really remember the names of em too much. I will get this one I see in barnes and nobles occasionnally though. I'll have to dig around to remember what that one is called. Looks like a newspaper almost.
  23. Pretty much like what Erin said. This is how ours worked also.
