  1. I think that if people stuck to the real Karate format, then MMA would not even be an issue. I believe that for the most part, it speaks to very different demographics. I am actually making my dojo more old school. I am making the training more difficult, and the children and parents are responding.
  2. Check craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for used standing bags. I have bought about 5 of them that are lightly used for a cheap price.
  3. There is an old theory that would work well. In the good old bare knuckle days, there was the trembling shock rule. If you did not see AND hear the strike land cleanly, it was not a point. You HAD to hit or kick the person hard for it to count. That is how it needs to go back to for single point sparring
  4. I would like to significantly improve my student roster. What is the best tip that YOU have used or heard of? Thank you in advance
  5. I am reading one of his books now, dojo marketing essentials. Thank you, I will look that book up.
  6. Or the most effective method for you all. I am STRESSED and the world is kinda kicking my butt right now. Could use all of your help! Thank you
  7. Our logo is a circle that says Thomas Kenpo- Way of Simplicity
  8. I am curious where you got the notion that silat was the oldest art in the world. There are drawings of Martial Arts in the hieroglyphics and other cultures as old as those.
  9. I personally believe that if your Martial Arts training does NOT prepare you for a real street fight, then your sensei, sifu, guro etc has failed you. The Martial Arts were created for us to be able to protect ourselves. If your training does not do that, then you may need to find a different instructor.
  10. To me, self defense is what you use and learn to prepare yourself against an unplanned criminal assault. I agree with your assessment that most fighting is consensual.
  11. There are also good combinations in Pradal Sarey and Lethwei as well. But I like what you are showing
  12. Thank you! I will try to post more regularly. Life was kicking my butt for a minute
  13. I use it to thread between the persons guard. Lets assume that you are both standing in an orthodox position. that lead leg roundhouse kick with the ball of the foot can really smash into their liver, OR land square to the groin very easily.
  14. I love the idea, but it is very clear that many of the fighters come from WKF rule sets. Too many low hands and raised chins. I would like to see the girls tops on and more kyokusin, enshin, and Kenpo stylists involved
  15. In the good old days you had to be at LEAST 18. I have been training since I was 3 and I got mine at 19. NOT saying that everyone has to start that young, but standards are important. It is like having to be 16 to drive. I KNEW how to drive at 14, but I still had to wake. When I got my BB my Pop told me that I now had more skill than wisdom. I do NOT believe in the title of GM unless you are the LEGIT and RECOGNIZED founder of a style or theory. Or you are the oldest child of the RECOGNIZED GM. I like what BJJ does, you have to be a training, teaching BB for 45 years. Or like Judo did, they had a senior council to guide the Martial Art and sport
  16. wow peligroso, that sounds like it hit close to home I thought that it was just another money grab for school owners. Maybe some schools are trying to groom the next group of instructors, but I dont know.
  17. Thank you guys for the responses, if anyone else has any suggestions, i would love to hear them!
  18. Thank you for the reply. What you put is along the lines of what i was thinking. But I am still very curious as to how other people pull it off. Keep the good stuff coming guys
  19. Hey folks, I am the solo teacher at my location so far, and I have limited times available. How does a rotating curriculum work in that context. If I have a person joins 3 months after the program begins, how do I keep the original group moving, while getting the new kid up to speed? I struggle with this, that is why I haven't moved ahead with my Kid Karate class yet. Can anyone explain it to me? Thanks in advance!
  20. and what do they consist of? I have heard of it a ton of times, but I really dont know what it consists of. Can anyone help a Martial Arts brother out here?
  21. Like I said, I am looking for just 10 people at the moment. I know it sounds small, but my room is kind of small for now. I am curious, in the digital age, where do you even put physical flyers anymore? I actually would like to do that because school starts in a few days, and I know there is potential there.
  22. Here is the funny part. I am ( no boasting ) the first kickboxing teacher in the Bay Area. I owned my own school, and subsequently the main name is kickboxing by a large margin. I closed my school ( life stuff ) and recently re-opened. Kickboxing is a lot more acceptable and popular, but I know that I can still rock this thing. I am only looking for ten people to start, and I want to build from there. What marketing strategy would you use? I am currently subletting for $25 an hour. Help a brotha out
  23. I am curious and would like to discuss some things with you. Thanks folks!
  24. Thank you, I am glad to be back. I am actually am leasing space at another school for a reasonable rate. It is an exercise kickboxing class, with gloves and shields and stuff. If anyone could help a brother out with more ideas, I appreciate it. I am only thinking in groups of ten in terms of growth. So thank you in advance
