  1. Hapkido... No, I wouldn't classify it as combative, it's an art. Styles that are combative would be Muay Thai, JKD, BJJ, Sambo, Boxing, Kali, Vale Tudo, Kyokushin, Kickboxing, Pankration and Savate.

  10. I wish to share a story... 2 years ago, a man was arrested at a retail store for shoplifting. The police officer placed handcuffs on the him and forced him to lie down on the ground so he could take notes from the store clerk. The police officer turn his back and the man stood up and broke the hand cuffs apart, he then began to flee and ran into a glass door, the glass broke and blood began to flow everywhere to the police officer amazement the man stood right back up and began to flee again. Eventually the officer caught him and the man was send to the hospital. The doctors had to remove pieces of glass out of his forehead and face, later it was found out that the man was high on "crystal" and "hash". What's the point of this story you ask...? Well what if this person attacked you, tried to rape or fight you? What would you do? Would a rake to his eyes be effective... probable not, would a good kick to the groin help... maybe, but most likely not, what about breaking a limb... it would slow him down, but may not stop him? So how do you stop a man who is high on drugs or drunk and doesn't feel anything..? Choke him out! Learn different variations of chokes and position from which to use them from, this may save your life one day. As stated before, you can break limbs, poke eyes, kick the groin... but if he doesn't feel anything due to drugs and/or alcohol you're in big trouble and your only way to survive this situation is choke him.
  11. KNEE STRIKES I wait till my opponent attemps to kick/punch me, I smuther his strike and clinch, then I begin to knee the ribs and stomack. Also I may charge my opponent and use a flying knee to break is guard/defence.
  12. MMA in Ontario, Canada may be finished after a few unfortunate turn of events. MMA is illegal in the province of Ontario and all MMA tournaments that I and everyone else have competed in could have resulted in arrests (which has happened before). The past few tournaments were a great success and many believed (including me) that the sport will survive, be recognized and respected by the government of Ontario, but this was not to be. Ken Hayashi is the Ontario Athletic Commissioner and he is the reason that MMA is illegal in Ontario, he has been "cracking" down on the events with the RCMP (Canada's version of the FBI) and has just recently busted a MMA event before it started last week. As a result, at the last second the rules changed in the competition, there was a fighters meeting and it was stated that it HAD to be a point sparring (Karate Style)/grappling event due to Ken Hayashi's apperance, everyone was upset (none of us know how to point spar ), the result was many of the top guys were disqualified for excessive force by the end of the tournament everyone was disgusted, we just wanted to go home and forget the tournament every happened. Right now the future of our sport is dim, we don't want to point spar we want to fight MMA style, that's why we train hard but the only way to do that now is to move to another province.

  14. What event is this? Do fighters from outside of China compete in these tournaments? I would bet not cause if they were allowed or knew about it then many MMA fighter (Gracies, Frank Shamrock, Vanderlei Silva...) would be competing. Is their any info, news, web sites, artics on these tournaments that people can get a hold of? if so then please share! Since when was BJJ created for MMA events? Kensai MMA (Pride, UFC, UCC...) is a sport, so like any other sport to protect the competitors they have rules, as a result some moves are not allowed (biting, kicking/punching the groin, eye racks...) come on Kensai what martial artists practice biting, kicking/punching to the groin, eye racks... with FULL INTENT, POWER and SPEED on other people? NONE! You know DAME well any professional MMA fighter would send you to the hospital of morgue, so give it a rest. Now why wouldn't the best Martial Artists be seen dead in the UFC or Pride..? OH no, WAIT, many name comes to mind ---"The Black Dragon" Ron Van Clief--- his a legendary 10th degree master of Gojo Karate, he fought Royce Gracie in UFC 4 and lost to Royce. Many famous and respected martial artist have promoted and been a part of UFC and other MMA event like Don "the dragon" Wilson, Bill "superfoot" Wallace, Katie Long, Chuck Norris which also trains in BJJ under the Gracies, Shamrock and his crew, the Gracies and MANY OTHERS. Kensai you don't like MMA events, that's fine, but DO NOT PUT THE SPORT DOWN unless you have the guts to compete!
  15. "I think the highest state of martial art, in application, must have no absolute form. And, to tackle pattern A with pattern B may not be absolutely correct. I feel that martial art should not be limited in a circle. That will reproduce in the students a wrong idea, thinking that a certain pattern will have the same result in fighting as in practice. " -Bruce Lee- "Jeet Kune Do rejects all restrictions imposed by forms and formality and emphasizes the clever use of the mind and body to defend and attack. " -Bruce Lee- I agree with Bruce Lee it makes alot of sence.
  16. I know whats wrong! Don't worry, it's nothing big, You have a "welt". You must have banged or hit somthing hard to created a welt (bump) under your skin. This is normal in Muay Thai training, when a hard cut kick hits your thigh it creats a welt or bump under the skin which is very soar and will begin to discolour when healing begins (purple, yellow, brown, red, blue/green). Don't worry it will go away and fully heal in 2 weeks just put ice on it. If your still worried then go see your doctor, but he/she will tell you the same.
  17. I when I spar/fight bigger opponents in Muay Thai, I use two main kicks to keep distance and wear my opponent down. Cut kicks (low roundhouse) to the inner and outer thighs will slow the big man down and if you have a strong cut kick it will drop your opponent to the ground. Second is using my teep (front push kick) to the belly everytime he punches this will knock the wind out of the opponent and will keep the distance.
  18. The popularity of martial arts is due to media. Television IMO is the biggest sourse for the popularity no matter what channel your watching theirs always something to do with the martial arts (fighting, kicking, weapons...) Now more then ever you can watch Taekwondo and Karate tournamnets, Kickboxing and Muay Thai fight are on at least once a month. Live MMA events can be cought on Pay Per Veiw and on some sport channels (TSN, ESPN, FOX SPORTS) Last year I watched a Sabaki Challege on tv it was great!
  19. No it dosen't take long at all, you can be an effective fighter in only 6 months of training. Now Muay Thai dosen't teach self-defence in weapon attacks, or having a "set way" of ecaping a hold (choke, bearhug...) but though the techniques of Muay Thai you should still be able to hold your own. http://www.coolshack.com/martial_arts/mauy_wall.jpg
  20. OxygenAsh if you want to be more "free" in techniques, then enter a MMA tournamant, there should be a few amatuer fights in NY.
