I understand, but a person dosen't want to be an effective fighter in 15 years, also learning differnet stances, blocks, forms, Ki/Chi, won't make you an effective fighter. Come on guys, like I said before... "In a street fight you will NEVER see someone use Karate style blocks or stances, you won't see someone using Monkey style or Crane style in a fight, WHY... because it's not realistic you could get hurt or killed from that." These arts you have mentioned are not even close to being as effective as Muay Thai. Some of the top fighters in MMA cross train in Muay Thai because it works, because it's effective, becasue it's realistic, theirs no forms, fancy strikes or movements just hard, effective techniques. Lets be honest if we made a poll of what style you would not want to fight against; Muay Thai, Shaolin Gung Fu, Ba Gua or Hsing I, (99.9%) almost everyone would choose Muay Thai.

Age and the Martial Arts
Thai_Kick replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I really don't know, I never asked him if he had to write a test or essay but he does know everything about the art and history, some of the best and toughest Kyokushin pratitioners come from Poland, Russia and Japan. Yes, being able to fight and defend yourself is more important then being able to perform a perfect Kata without a doubt. I look at it this way, if your a black belt and you can't fight or defend yourself then you should not have a black belt. I know a few "black belts" that can't do either, but their kata's are perfect and well timed so they get a black belt for it? I'm sorry but it dosen't sound right to me! Iv'e been training in Muay Thai for 5 years and compete in MMA tournaments, I have fought 3 "black belts" two of which trained in a karate style and the other TKD. I'm sorry to say but they did not desirve their black belts, they were not able to fight or defend themselves. I beat those "black belts" without a problem, they were honestly my easiest matches, but what makes this situation even worst is what will happen to them if the get into a street fight? -
Kensai, what makes Shaolin Gung Fu, Ba Gua and Hsing I the most effective standing arts over Muay Thai?

Age and the Martial Arts

Yes, and that's how it should be! Only in North America can you get a black belt and not know how to fight, defend yourself, or be in physically good condition. My uncle trained in Kyokushin Karate back home in Poland since he was 12, his 48 now. When he was going for his black belt the test consited of 3 phases. Phase 1 - 200 squats, 200 push ups, 200 sit ups, 10 mile run, break 10 wooden boards and 5 slaps or concreat. Phase 2 - All techniques from White to Brown belt. Phase 3 - Kumite; spar 9 students full contact each for 10 minutes and finally spar his teacher for 10 minutes. When my uncle completed all this he earned his Black belt. This is how it should be, a black belt should be earned by being physically fit, being able to fight, take punishment and knowing your techniques. "Just because you know all you Kata's DOSEN'T MEAN YOU DESIVRE A BLACK BELT!" That's a statment that my uncle gave me. -

Tournament wins should be a criteria for earing a black belt IMO. Also if your a blue belt or brown belt and you beat a black belt in a tournament you should be awarded a black belt. You have proven you can be as good or better then that black belt by beating him, that should be enough to earn a black belt. -
The area around my ankles seem to always ache while I train.
Thai_Kick replied to Shay415's topic in Health and Fitness
You have weak ankles, it's not a big problem many people do. You should buy ankle wrap or an ankle brace, this will give support to the ankle and stop the ache and weak feeling. -
What would make you think this about kickboxing and boxing? Sure they use basic techniques; jab, cross, roundhouse kick... but these techniques are ring & street proven. The techniques are heavily emphasized and trained making boxers and kickboxers effective fighters in a short period of time, the same goes for Muay Thai. In a street fight you will NEVER see someone use Karate style blocks or stances, you won't see someone using Monkey style or Crane style in a fight, WHY... because it's not realistic you could get hurt or killed from that. IMO Boxing and Kickboxing is much more effective then Karate in a street fight but the most effective stand up style without a doubt is Muay Thai.

True, their have been many KO's due to high roundhouse kicks in K-1 and Muay Thai competitions, but that's due to wearing the opponent out in early rounds and in the later rounds when the opponent is dazed or tired they use a high roundhouse to finish him off. In a street fight you don't have time to wear your opponent out, you have to take control of the situation as quickly as possible and that means elbows, knees, punches, low kicks, head butts, choke holds... these should your primary weapons, when the heat is on, your adrenalin is pumping and your heart is racing, the last thing your goanna think about are fancy stances or strikes, leave that for impressing your TKD friends.

A knives is your best weapon on the streets, I carry a knive on me all times. I have a Smith and Wesson neck knive with a fixed blade, it's real light and handy. I haven't used it in a fight or self-defense situation yet and hope I never do but it's always there just in case. I found a pic of my knive for you to see! http://store5.yimg.com/I/fastknife_1707_12307646

Belt Ranking
Thai_Kick replied to SuperMinh's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
A belt system in Kickboxing sounds strange and weird to me What is tested, what is taught in each level? I've been training in Muay Thai for 5 years and have NEVER heard of a belt ranking system before, some of my friends train in Kickboxing and Muay Thai and they haven't heard of this either. If it works for you and you learn better then great , but it's still sounds strange to me! -

Hitting a heavy bag will definitely increase strength and power in your palm strike. Also work on building your triceps, when punching or using a hand strike you get your strength from your triceps.

This is what you do... - Get a partner with focus gloves, or hit the heavy bag - Jab for 1min - rest 30 sec. - Jab for 3min - rest 30 sec - Jab for 5min - rest 30 sec - Jab for 3min - rest 30 sec - Jab for 1min If you stick to this routine your left jab/hand stamina will increase greatly also strengh and power will increase as a bouns! Good Luck! -
Sorry G95champ you contradicted yourself on your statment. Quote: - "Relax and please watch you use of certin words. I love to see people as emotional but this is just a discussion board so please take it for that. " - "Again please watch the words you use. Thanks" - "We all have ideas we think are best so lets express them freely." So I can express myself freely but I can't express myself using certian words? (p!ss & hell)? What wrong with these words? That's like a communist country saying you are all free people, but we own you and everything you have? Sorry G95champ it dosen't make sence!

I'm a 20 year old, Polish guy who's full of "p!ss and vinager" and I love Muay Thai! Sure I may not be competing in fights when I'm 30+ years old but their is NO WAY IN HELL I'm going to train in Tai Chi or Hsing-I at my age, I'll do those arts when I'm 80! Now not everyone who trains in Muay Thai take the sport as serious as I or someone elsedoes, so not all people will be broken down from years of training, you can still train in Muay Thai till your old and grey, it just matters how serious and hard you train. The majority of the time I fight in MMA events because it's much easier on the body then Muay Thai fights, so has a result I get more fights in, with less injury.

Full Contact... mmm... where to start... Every Martial Art has it's own style or idea of full contact sparring/fighting; Taekwondo implies the use of punches and kicks to the face and body as full contact, but knees, elbows, leg kicks and grappling is not used or allowed, Kyokushin Karate uses kicks, punches, and knees, but their is no contact to the face, punches and knees must be to the body and kick are allowed to the head, but no grappling and elbows. Muay Thai allows punches, kicks, knees, and elbows to all parts of the body in full contact but no grappling. Now these are only a few examples and of coarse every school or teacher is different and they may or may not train the way I stated also their is a question of full intent, are they punching or kicking as hard and fast as they can? If not then is it still full contact? Now why are some techniques not allowed or used in "their" version of full contact? Even MMA (mixed martial arts) as rules! This could be the result of many reasons, One they want to protect their student/fighters from getting hurt, some techniques are not practiced or taught therefore not used, or it's too dangers, the list can go on and on but it all comes down to protecting the students/fighters and keeping everyone safe. I myself train in Muay Thai and JKD, when we fight our version of full contact is under modified MMA rules; punches, kicks to any part of the body (except groin), knees only to the body, grappling (strikes to the body only when grappling), no elbows, eye contact, head butts, small joint manipulation, hair pulling, contact to the groin and biting. Now somthings we bleed and get welts, brusies, Yet we know we can take a hit and deliver one back with a smile and thats the way we like it. In conclusion everyone does train full contact, BUT in their own way, sure other styles or events allow more use of techniques freely attempting to make it more realistic, yet the only true full contact we will every see is on the streets.

"Martial Art" Magazine Sexist??

So is it like a PlayBoy for male Martail Artists? -
Kyokushin; Kyoku (ultimate) and Shin (reality or truth) it's a hard style of karate well known for its realistic full-contact style of fighting. It was developed during the 1930's, 40's and 50's by the founder, Sosai Masutatsu Oyama, 10th Dan. As other styles of Karate Kyokushin contains kata's and other traditional elements (stances, strikes...) If your looking to become tough and a well trained fighter then Kyokushin is for you.
