hehe, this thread reminds me of two forms in ATA TKD that i think are interesting, I believe it is the 2nd and 3rd degree forms, the 2nd is very linear and hard, while the 3rd degree black belt form is based on kung fu and is really circular and smooth in transitions.

Parkour and Selfdefense
wingedMonkey replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I practice some freerunning or parkour, whatever you want to call it, but the reason most schools probably don't teach you this is because its a huge liability and extremely dangerous, I know i'm not so active in it and i've hurt a shoulder, hip, ankle, foot, both knees, and hands. That all happened just by practicing too! So it's great if you want to practice it with friends but you do it at your own risk, and there are lots of forums and stuff online if you want to train but you better train reeeeally hard. -
The middle finger & bad words?
wingedMonkey replied to learning kempo-karate's topic in General Chat
I think as a martial artist and even just being a good person, you shouldn't be "throwing" the middle finger around and saying bad words every minute or so. I understand bad words are an extreme form of expressing yourself but you don't need to say them every five minutes. -
snap kick uses
wingedMonkey replied to gypsy rover's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Crescent kicks are extremely efficient and effective, especially when trying to attack two times at once really fast. What you basically do is punch once to have them block one side then punch/kick. As in the second punch and the inner crescent kick get thrown at the same time because he either blocks the punch or the kick but at the same time if you are fast enough he still wouldn't have recovered from blocking the first punch. Be really careful though doing crescent kicks to the head as they hit in the temple and because of their circular fast motion bring in lots of force. Snap kicks are good for hitting them before they kick you when you see them start kicking. -
Actually muay thai did come from Kung Fu because the traditional versions of muay thai muay boran, khmer, and other styles of the region are loosly based off of animal styles of kung fu. Now I didn't say that meant it is kung fu just like kung fu isn't kalarypayatu because they have all evolved and made themselves distinguished of each other. Now Kalarypayatu was a martial art originally from India and the way the story goes about kung fu and as much as we know is that a monk from India came over to china. He saw that most of the monks couldn't take the long lengths of time in prayer so he taught them some stuff to condition themselves. They then took it from there and eventually made it unique and evolved it better. A good place to look at a sample of connection between muay thai and kung fu is the show Human Weapon, but it just has a small dose of the history, i believe it is episode 1.

Taekwondo addiction
wingedMonkey replied to foofies's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I am guilty of almost all of them.... -
In my opinion..(in my opinion) I have seen back kicks or "mule kicks" in other forms, EVEN in some forms of TKD which surprised me but I don't see it as efficient and only an off balance thing. I mean, in TKD we have the reverse kick, where you look behind you (or if you have good targeting) just kick but twist your whole body to give it more power. At the same time you end up facing them (which I guess shows the emphasis of being able to use both sides of your body effectively in TKD). Oh and I'm not crazy...i have studied three TKD styles and one off shoot type .

My advice is basically like everyone else's just speak a lot to native speakers, get into conversations with them, and listen to them also in their conversations. Although I know how you feel, I know Spanish and some Korean but am losing it because I don't practice it. The reason I don't practice it is because I'm afraid that I'll mess up so...Learn from others! lol.

Help with speed in running please!
wingedMonkey replied to wingedMonkey's topic in Health and Fitness
I have heard a lot about heart monitors and never really paid much attention because i never knew what they were for. I just thought they were used so you would know when to stop running before you got a heart attack . -
I think its more like it was said earlier that, every asian martial art comes from kung fu...i was surprised recently to learn that muay thai did too..i didn't know...i guess u learn something new every day...i wonder what other martial art out there came from kung fu that we just don't know or realize...

Thoughts on ATA schools?
wingedMonkey replied to Azmyth's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Thanks , and I just read what I wrote, sorry for sounding pretty mean. I do that, sometimes my brain just goes off on a rant without thinking about it until later. But yea, I hope they don't make a habit out of this or someone is eventually going to get hurt. Either by a person thinking they are successful in defending themselves, or they'll go to a blackbelt tournament eventually (where blackbelts are understood to not hold back much on their hits) and will get pummled. -

Thoughts on ATA schools?
wingedMonkey replied to Azmyth's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Hey guys, I recently have seen that my school IS giving people, that haven't gone to class for the whole time they need to, their next belts...its really making me mad, but in the end i think, hey they are only hurting themselves... I actually saw one of these students finally go to sparring class one day and they compeletely sucked! I was like..yup, i'm glad i make my belt actually mean something.. -
Yea, I love how he opened up the idea of learning everything to everyone too..
-
Yea, hehe, that's the point bushido_man, he would NEVER join because he wouldn't want to fight like that, so it would basically never happen, he said himself he didn't want to compete when he was alive.

22. Engaging in an unsportsmanlike conduct that causes an injury to an opponent. A lot of people forget this one and go all out in UFC but you actually aren't supposed to. Oh and I recently read an article about Bruce Lee in the new issue of Black Belt Magazine and they talk about how they would ask him why he wouldn't fight in competition and he mainly said because you would have to hold back and there were so many restrictions. So yeah, I believe Bruce would totally pwn at UFC but he would be kicked out for too many fouls/killing.

Help with speed in running please!
wingedMonkey replied to wingedMonkey's topic in Health and Fitness
Yea, I tried the sprinting faster thing and it worked I actually finished the mile in about a minute less, so it was just my body getting used to going that slow speed. I believe next I'll take the advice of the distance people, I will be running 2 and a half miles one day of the week which will probably be fridays. Since I run a mile on mondays and wednesdays, and tuesdays and thursdays are rest, Friday is the only day i don't take tkd practice so i should be alright by then to do distance. -

Help with speed in running please!
wingedMonkey replied to wingedMonkey's topic in Health and Fitness
Wow! Thanx guys, these are all awesome ideas i never thought of myself for some reason, i'll try all of this. -
I am almost about to go through my black belt prequalification testing for tae kwon do and one of the requirements is to be able to run a mile under 9 minutes and 20 seconds. I ran an 8th of a mile in about 9 minuts and 6 seconds meaning my mile is probably at 11 or 12 minutes. Is there any way to get me to go faster through the mile? I'm running a mile every other day of the week and this is after working out in martial arts.
