At my school we always have a feedback session a few days after a test, though we never have large groups testing. I do think your instructor should give you feedback on your performance. Just as the others have said, be diplomatic in how you phrase/ask the question (I like joesteph's way of putting it - "where do I need improvement?").

A Step Closer To Green Belt
KarateEd replied to nanook660's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Good luck! -
One good thing about philosophy, and particularly the questions you pose your students, joesteph, is that it can provide ample opportunity for students to utilize higher-order thinking skills when answering a question. Simple recall would not be sufficient to answer your questions. My high school didn't offer it.

I usually enjoy them, however, they can be really cheesy if poorly done. My favorite car chase is from the movie "Bullitt."

I think that the MA practitioner's regular encounters with pain (whether it occurs during sparring, hitting a heavy bag, or simply being sore from training) makes us more neutral toward pain than most. I do believe that my attitude toward pain has changed from when I was not involved in MA.

Help on Styles
KarateEd replied to Roager's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
First off, welcome to the forums! Which style to take is always a tough decision complicated by the availability of schools. You do have experience in Shorin-ryu, so you may want to take up that style again. However, you might give Judo a second look. Though it does have a grappling aspect, it also focuses on projecting your opponent to the ground while you remain standing. Check out some of these videos on judoinfo.com. Having shorter legs should translate into a lower center of gravity that would work to your advantage executing some of the throws. I guess I sound like a judo salesman, but I don't even train in that style (though I would like to). Hope this helps. Ed -

If you have the disks for re-installing the operating system then you might want to erase the hard drive and re-install the operating system. If your Mac's OS is version 10.3.x or above it has a built in disk erasing program (learn more about it here). You might be able to use a free program, such as Derik's Boot and Nuke (dban), to erase the hard drive. If you go the erasing route you probably want to preform it at the DoD standard (dban gives you this option). I believe the current DoD standard requires writing random data over the disk seven times, thereby "destroying" old data. A simple format of the hard drive won't erase data.

I wondered how this fight turned out, but always forgot to check when on the Internet.

I only have experience with Century uniforms but they have always worked well for me. The sizes are just about right and they last for a while. My lightweight uniform lasted through about 5 years of steady training (and few years of not-so-steady training), though it did get thin after repeated washings. My Century heavyweight uniform is still going strong after several years of wear, though it has a "stone-washed" looked to it now (its black in color).

Korean MMA; Spirit MC
KarateEd replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I hadn't heard of it before. Do any American TV stations play the fights? -
I started out in Tang Soo Do when I was 12 and stopped about 2 years later. I picked up MA (TKD) again when I was in college at about 22 years of age. Both styles are similar so it didn't take me long to get back into the swing of things. I did notice a deterioration in my flexibility, though, from when I was a kid.

KarateEd replied to Patrick's topic in KarateForums.com Announcements
Congratulations to all the winners. -
Those are pretty cool. I think the wooden one was my favorite.

Did your dad teach you how to fight?
KarateEd replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nope, I had to take the initiative and go learn on my own. -
Those people put some serious effort into their costumes. The transformer and Predator costume were my favorites

Thanks for giving me the heads up. I downloaded a copy.

Understanding my school and your school
KarateEd replied to Truestar's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My school is also not affiliated with the ITF or WTF, but we do both ITF (no sine wave movement) and WTF (palgwe) forms. We don't do point sparring; we utilize light-mid contact and the matches end at the discretion of the instructor, barring any sort of injury. I wish we worked grappling more, but that is left up to each person to pursue. We do grapple on occasion while sparring (if one of the participants are willing to initiate it) but not with the lower ranking students. -
Welcome to KF, shredder!

Sounds like an interesting book. I have heard that Bruce Lee was influenced by Jack Dempsey and his effective use of the jab/straight lead punch. I'll be on the lookout for that book.
