  1. We have practiced using and blocking knee strikes very little until recently, though our training is quite rudimentary at the moment. JoeSteph, my previous experience with knee strikes (we have one one-step and one three-step sparring technique involving a knee strike) was to deliver them in the same manner in which you describe, pulling the opponent down and into your knee. Now that some grappling has been introduced we are beginning to utilize and block knee strikes in short-range and clinch situations in a manner similar to MMA guys.
  2. Oh man, I think it was Mindspring dial-up.
  3. Welcome to KF, Jenny
  4. Welcome to KF, Inya shaolin!
  5. I have just started Across The Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn I'm also reading a technical booklet from Harris Communications titled Radio Communications in the Digital Age.
  6. Welcome to KF, NewLevel! Isn't it great to finally start something that you have had an interest in for a long time? As for your question, my answer is a resounding No!
  7. Welcome to KF, Miss18Karatewoman!
  8. That was odd...I got about 1:30 into it and had to close the tab.
  9. When I hear the word "dynamic" I always think of continuous change or adaptation. So, I would consider "dynamic karate" that which teaches you to adapt to the environment that you find yourself in if you have to use your skills. I think most MA schools do this. However, I guess a school pushing the "dynamic" title might have training sessions in street clothes, plenty of sd work against common weapon attacks, focus on learning how to use readily available weapons (such as sticks), common unarmed attack scenarios with less focus on tournament participation, traditional weapons, and point-style fighting.
  10. Wow, 15K! I might hit that count....20 years from now!
  11. That was interesting. I sold some comics on ebay recently, each for about $2, so they just narrowly missed that list.
  12. As some others have said I feel more tense when my fist are clenched. I prefer the relaxing feel of an open hand (by "open hand" I mean a loose fist with fingers curled and thumb touching the side of index finger). If I was to look at my hands when sparring I think I would see them transition between "clenched" and "open" pretty frequently. I don't like to run with my fist clenched either; I feel too tight, not relaxed. My fingers are usually slightly curled and if I am sprinting then my fingers will straighten out.
  13. This first link didn't work for me, but when I viewed the second link the first thing that came to my mind was "two hands on the weapon," just like tallgeese states. It is a more stable grip from which to fire a weapon.
  14. I have seen this type of mindset in others, too. Some people, regardless of rank, are just not cut out to be instructors.
  15. Welcome to KF, damen!
  16. Welcome to KF, bennyt!
  17. Reading Yagyu Munenori's book The Sword and The Mind, he states that a master is one who is "free from attachment to his various skills." By free from attachment he means that, when using your skills, you don't consider exactly what you are doing you just do it (due to years of experience, training, study, etc.).
  18. I'll wear the pants going to and from but I put the top and belt on at the dojang and take it off before I leave. Our instructors have always told us not to wear the complete uniform outside of class (this is due to the attention that it can draw, as others have stated).
  19. This is a funny parody of all those local car dealer commercials that everyone sees on TV regardless of where you live. Notice the jump spinning wheel kick he opens the commercial with and all the Top Gun references.
  20. I am currently reading The Sword and The Mind by Yagyu Munenori.
  21. I am picking the Steelers but hoping the Cardinals will win.
  22. Welcome to KF, Empty Hand! I got my undergraduate degree in History and my Masters in History Ed.
  23. Welcome to KF, Erin!
