What level are you seeking?
KarateEd replied to James Bullock's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Short term, I want to get back to the level I was before I started graduate school. Long term, I'll quote tallgeese I want to improve my stand-up skills and begin to develop some ground skills. -
I would have to say an early C3 Corvette with a 427.

That's great! I'm glad it worked out for her. I once tried to sell advertising space on the tailgate of my truck on ebay, but I didn't get any bidders. I think I needed to be in a bigger market for it to sell.

Would you help if someone needed it?
KarateEd replied to BLueDevil's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with others here. If family members are around I would get them to safety first. But, as a bystander/third party, I would initially try to deescalate the situation through talking. One the punches started flying there is really only two actions, intervene physically or remove yourself from the situation. I don't know what I would have done in this situation, to be honest, though I would hope that I wouldn't stand by and let someone get pummeled like that. Also, as pittbullJudoka said, the guy on the phone made a big mistake by letting his guard down and rubbing his face, or whatever he was doing. My real beef is with the store manager. I think he should have taken a more proactive approach to stop the altercation. After all, it was his store. -
Does your school/gym do basics in training?
KarateEd replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
We usually go over basics in every class, though what we do varies. About 90% of the time we will practice our four basic blocks w/counter strikes (in a front stance). After that it just depends on what the needs of class are coupled with what the instructor has planned. -
The Seven Samurai

Ah, The Magnificent Seven. I saw this some years ago, before ever seeing The Seven Samurai. It was good and was full of big name actors, for that time. -
Why we do, this thing we do....

When I was a kid I guess I thought it was cool (seeing The Karate Kid is partially responsible for this, along with those Saturday afternoon dubbed Kung-Fu movies). Now that I am older I have discovered that MA allows me to remain physically active, express myself physically, and blow off steam (when I am doing MA I don't worry about outside problems) among other things. I have also found that the pursuit of MA goals has helped me to attain non-MA goals. The discipline and effort needed to succeed in MA spills over into my everyday life. -
World Combat League

I was watching a WCL match over the weekend and saw where one of the fighters ("Fighter A") finished the match but was injured and unable to go on. The next time he was due up for fighting (with what appeared to be the same opponent-"Fighter B") he was replaced by a substitute. This bothered me. In other venues the guy that can no longer compete due to an injury is done, whether the ref ends the bout or a corner worker throws in the towel. Here, however, Fighter A was replaced with a fresh substitute. This put Fighter B in the hole from the beginning, in my opinion, because he and Fighter A had beat on each other quite effectively in the earlier match. Now Fighter B was facing a fresh guy, all his efforts spent on Fighter A were gone (or, the other way around, the sub was facing a guy that someone else had softened up, so to speak). I guess because the WCL has teams instead of individuals it requires some way of substituting fighters so that a single injury doesn't destroy a team's chance of winning a meet. I don't really care for this, though. -
I recently saw Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai. Though it was long (started at 7:00pm and ended at 10:30pm) I really enjoyed it. My sister even got interested in it. I was wondering who else had seen it and what people thought of it. Maybe NightOwl can review it, if he hasn't already. Ed

I'd like to see it in the theater (I watched the show on Nick-at-Night, also), but don't think I will. Kung-Fu Panda and WallE are higher on my list. I guess I'll end up renting it like bushido_man.

I've caught one game, Portugal vs. Czech Republic. Portugal looks real good, but I haven't seen the other contenders play so I really have no idea who might win the whole thing.

facebook, that's pretty much it. I have been surprised to find a number of high school friends on facebook (it has been a while since I was in high school) and ended up getting together with a few of them.

My schedule is pretty wacky right now, but I might be able to contribute. Just name a date and time. Ed

Welcome to KF!

My backyard is it, at the moment.

I guess it is basically a tube-frame car with fabric stretched over it (built kind of like the Maserati Tipo 61 ). It might be pretty rigid.

My serious hobby, outside of MA, is cars, anything to do with them from driving to working on them.
