  2. Hi Ang, In Karate, the student learns to control kicks and punches (which is one of the things that I find really appealing), though you do get the odd person who will try to hurt you. More often than not it's a beginner. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-30 11:26 ] [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-30 11:27 ]
  3. I'll be watching out for that sounds interesting (Good point, by the way) _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-29 11:37 ]
  4. Point to ponder... Would you rather be up before a judge, receiving a criminal record. Or would you rather be carried off in a wooden box, for not defending yourself. I know which I prefer.

  6. By applying a Kubotan correctly to a pressure point, you can get any desired effect that you are looking for, without breaking any bones. You don't have to hit anyone to cause pain _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-26 02:36 ]
  7. Hi Valn, My Sensei (Karateronin) tells me that M. Nakayama's books are excellent, he also recommends that the Beginners Guide to Shotokan Karate: Beginners to Black Belt by John Van Weenen should be read by all of his students, which I find in itself is an excellent read. I suppose, that it all boils down to what you are looking for. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-26 00:30 ]
  8. Hi, As you no doubt know, most people who start martial arts (for one reason or another), don't exactly know what to expect when they throw that first punch or kick. Like most of you, I think that sparring prepares the martial artist both physically and mentally for the real world outside the dojo, by enabling each individual to practise against one another in a controlled environment _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-25 13:36 ]
  9. Hi all, I'm in agreance with Kickbutt, the kubaton is very easy to conceal, and I too (as of now) carry one where ever I go. Plus it makes a rather nifty keychain. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-25 13:16 ]
  10. I do (sometimes) use ankle and wriste weights whilst practising at home, it's suprising what a difference they can do, especially with blocks, kicks and punches.
  11. I train at the dojo 4 (soon 5) times a week (for an hour and a half each day). When I'm not at the dojo, I practise for at least 2 hours each day at home (Kihon basics, Kata, and Gohon Kumite). I also practise Kobudo, twice a week (or when I can) for an hour and a half. I used to go weight training 3 times a week, but I got bored of it _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-23 12:13 ]
  12. Hi gang, I gave up smoking 7 months ago, and I don't miss a single cigarette. Mind you, I'm now addicted to Shotokan Karate and Kobudo. I just can't get enough If you really want to quit, you'll quit. Try working out how much you spend on cigarettes, it worked for me. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) [ This Message was edited by: Goose on 2001-08-22 14:02 ]

  15. Hiya Angela, In the styles that I've studied, the student starts off as a white belt (prior to grading). Apart from Wing Chun, where I started off with nothing, and had to grade for your first sash (red). _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 18, 2001 12:27pm

  21. Hi Patrick, I've done that, I was just wondering if anyone else was having the same problem with the site (or if it was just me). I just forgot to mention it Thanx anyway. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate 10 Kyu Okinawan Kobudo Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 15, 2001 2:52pm
  22. Whilst browsing through http://www.panthervideo.com/, I came across a couple of Kobudo videos by Mikio Nishiuchi (spelling ?) that looked rather interesting, and naturally I wanted to purchase them. Everything went well, when it came to adding my details. That was until I added my credit card details, and clicked which shipping service I required (followed by clicking onto the submit button), after which I received an error message. Has anybody else had the same problem? And does anybody know of anywhere else that stocks Panther videos? _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate 10 Kyu Okinawan Kobudo Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 15, 2001 2:53pm
