I once tried a combination of weight training and TKD, at first it seemed rather impossible to combine the two, but after a month or two I began to notice the benefits. There are some books on the subject available at all good book stores. Weight Training for Martial Artists (can't remember the name of the author), and Power Training in Kung Fu and Karate by Ron Marchini & Leo Fong, to name a couple. These will give you a brief outline in combining weight lifting with martial arts. _________________ Best Wishes Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) 9th Kyu Shotokan Karate 10 Kyu Okinawan Kobudo Karate International Black Belt Schools (UK) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 13, 2001 1:48pm

Hi there, I'm loving it here. Catch you later

Welcome to KarateForums, guys. Nice to see some students from Redhall, joining in the debates.

If you read any of the books by any of the past masters, you will probably find that they all learned something from their students at sometime or other. I think that's how a genuine teacher/student relationship should be. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 9, 2001 1:21pm

Hi Sensei Reece, I know for a fact that your Kata is excellent, it was through your patience and devotion to the art, that I was able to learn Heian Sandan. Me, a mere 9th Kyu student, who will soon be grading for 8th Kyu in September. If it wasn't for the encouragement of yourself, Sensei Leak (Karateronin), Sensei Bates, Jim Reece, and all of the dedicated members at Karate International, I wouldn't have got to where I am now. And I thank each and every one of you, for helping me to realise my true potential. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 8, 2001 11:51am

I would say that it doesn't hurt... However thousands would disagree. Either way, I think its worth it in the long run - but that's my opinion. A word of advice, If you intend on having a tatoo. Do not have names tatooed onto your skin, unless its your own. Always get a decent design ( one you will not regret), as you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 6, 2001 4:01pm

I have six tatoos, three on each arm. On my right arm a Grim Reaper (Ozzy Osbourne style), Celtic band ( that goes all the way around my arm), a winged dragon holding a skull on my forearm. On my left arm a Sigil of Baphomet (I'm a Black Metal fan), a band of skulls and chains (that goes all the way around my arm), and a design by H.R Giger on my forearm (the Swiss surrealist, and designer of 'Alien'). And I don't regret any of them.

We learn pressure points at our dojo. There are also a book that I can recommend on the subject 'Pressure Point Fighting: A Guide to the Secret Heart of Asian Martial Arts' by Rick Clark, which can be found at http://www.amazon.co.uk & http://www.amazon.com. I also understand that there's a Karate Instructor by the name of George Dillman, who has one or two books on the subject. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Aug 6, 2001 4:05pm

Hi, My short term goal is to pass my next grading (in september), and to eventually become an instructor/coach with Karate International (when I get my green belt). I would also like to master the art of Kobudo and to pass my first grade. My long term goal is to eventually gain my 1st Dan, and gradually move up through the black belt ranks _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Jul 28, 2001 8:16am

People who don't know what to do...

I agree, wholeheartedly. I heard that most Martial Arts Associations won't let you reach black belt until you reach a certain age. Though I may have heard wrong. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Jul 26, 2001 11:27am -

It just seemed weird mixing a so-called 'soft style' with a 'hard style'. Dunno, maybe it's me -

Hi Tae, Another thing that I noticed, is how some instructors try to pass on certain styles as Ving Tsun (another way of spelling). For instance one instructor that I took lessons from, was introducing Tae-Kwondo techniques into his lessons. _________________ Warmest Regards Darryl Garrick (aka Goose) This Message was edited by: Goose on Jul 16, 2001 2:31pm This Message was edited by: Goose on Jul 16, 2001 2:33pm -

Hi Everyone I'd like you all to give Shortdog (Dan), a nice warm welcome. I first met Dan on the World of Martial Arts Mailing list, over on Yahoo, it's a new list and so far only consists of 2 members But I feel that the list has some great potential, so c'mon give the guy a chance and visit his mailing list, let's get some interesting dicussions up and running.
