What else do you have in the way of social media and web presence? Assuming you've got good content and are posting regularly, one thing I found has worked on Instagram and YouTube is to engage with similar accounts to yours. Like and leave meaningful comments on their videos. Not just "hey watch my videos" but comments sharing your take on their video and possibly linking to your version. Over time people will seek out what your posting and watch your videos too.

Yep back to Zoom Got to come up with some new ideas I'm upset about not being able to go to the gym anymore, I'd buy a power rack but I've no garage or anywhere to put it

I think the general recommendation has been 40mm mats as a minimum for any falling or groundwork. 20mm are only really good for forms and standing work and as you are over concrete the 40mm might be better. Can you put some carpet underlay underneath?

I mostly like the SL5x5 app as it works out my warm up sets for me and does all the plate calculations so I just turn up and go. I have to say what I don't like about the SL programme is that it asks you to only do 5x1 of deadlifts, it doesn't feel like enough so I've been doing 3x5s.

A New TKD Encyclopedia (ITF)
DWx replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I've seen them quite a bit and know a few who have them. Seem to be very comprehensive but very much ITF focused. I was looking at getting them at some point. -
22/12/20 Still trying to figure out where I need to start with these. Also had to cut my session short as due to COVID you get an hour slot in the gym, after which everyone leaves and they disinfect the whole gym. Turned up late to my slot so didn't see the full hour. Squat 10x20kg, 5x62.5, 5x62.5, 5x62.5, 5x62.5, 5x62.5 Bench Press 10x20kg, 10x25, 5x30,5x30, 5x30, 5x30, 5x30 Barbell Row 10x20kg, 5x30kg, 5x40, 5x40, 5x40, 5x40

Thanks Brian. I was trying to decide between the two.. and what swayed me initially is the SL 5x5 program has fewer exercises for me to learn and also the official app is free whereas the Starting Strength app was £23. I might swap over at some point depending on how I get on.

Not sure how long I'll stick at this but here goes... 20/12/20 I'm trying to be a bit more structured with my gym routine so I'm starting up with Stronglifts 5x5 program. Haven't lifted properly in 12 months so was just figuring out where I am strength-wise. Numbers are a bit weedy but trying to concentrate on good form and the routine before increasing the weight. Squat 10x20kg, 10x40, 10x50, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60 Bench Press 10x20kg, 10x20, 10x20 Deadlift 10x30kg 10x50, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60, 5x60 Dumbell Shoulder Press 10x10kg, 10x10, 10x10

Thanks, Danielle! Just knowing this thread exists makes me focus on getting something done a couple of times a week at the least. It's good motivation, I guess. When I first started the thread, my hope was that other people would join in with what they've done for training during their weeks. At first, there were several people who jumped in and posted, but they kind of fell off. But that's what I really want out of it; to see what others are doing, too, and see what I can do to affect my training. So, with that said.... PLEASE, EVERYONE, FEEL FREE TO JUMP IN HERE AND POST YOUR TRAINING ALONG WITH ME! IT'S LONELY IN HERE! So, today's training: 12/15/2020 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 165x5, 195x3, 210x1, 240x5. Press: 45x5x2, 70x5, 95x1, 130x3, 130x3, 130x3, 130x3, 130x3. Since I'm doing press on back to back days, and with the weight getting heavier and being a little harder to manage, I decided to go with sets of 3 and still get the same total volume. It was still pretty hard today, and likely is because of no recovery days between. So, moving forward, I may adjust and have the second day be a push press day, and see how that goes. Then, after catching up here at KF, I'm going to sit and read Old School Perspectives on Taekwon-do for a little while in a light stretch. It is impressive how long you've committed to it. I might start posting... maybe

Brian, do you not find it is crazy that you have been posting in this one thread for 13 years? I saw it pop up and 483 pages! Great stuff though and always interesting seeing what you're doing

The British Martial Arts and Boxing Association...
DWx replied to ashworth's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Exactly, explained it much better than me, thanks My current organisation hasn’t been too helpful during COVID, but this potential new one has been great so far, feel like they are really going out of their way to help clubs recover and get back on their feet. If they're on the ball with it then that's good. The regulations have been a mine field and open to interpretation so having someone to do all that is a big help. Bonus if they are telling their members about the finance side of things too such as funding which is available and what you can claim back If and when combat sports can move on to Phase 0 (contact allowed), you'll need a good governing body to get the go ahead. Each combat sport or group has to submit their plans and have them signed off by DCMS. -

Makes sense all, thanks. I think that kind of clears up a question I've had for years. Many organizations around here must be able to be their own governing body; like the ATA, when I was in it. It's really part of three organizations; the ATA (North America), the Songham TKD Federation (South America ATA basically), and the WTTU (World Traditional TKD Union, for Europe, Asia, etc). Either the ATA is the umbrella it all falls under, or the WTTU is, but I think it's the ATA.Now, my current school, Sun Yi's Academy of Hays, is a member of the TTA (Traditional TKD Association). I always wondered why there was an association when the only schools in it were the Sun Yi's branch schools. I think this is why. The basically provided themselves with a governing body, I think. I've also learned over the past few years, a few different schools have been brought in under the umbrella of the TTA. Possibly the difference is that groups like Ashworth linked to and like the British Taekwon-Do Council I posted would have little to no input on technical matters and would not generally get involved in belt promotions etc. Their function really is like a union or trade body and they provide general training on things like safeguarding or equality and maybe facilitate first aid training but no actual martial arts training. Not sure about the other martial arts but in TKD we do have NGBs similar to the ATA which do coordinate the technical side of things to, but they in turn are members of the BTC and are answerable to them. For instance my school I'd part of the British Taekwon-Do Federation which in turn is a BTC member group. The BTC is pretty bipartisan and represents all WT, ITF and independent TKD to the government. -
After a 4 week lockdown we're back teaching in person but only for under 18s and all still socially distant. But... local schools seem to have loads of cases, one of my students got hit with it pretty bad and very unwell. Every time a school student gets it, the whole year group is sent home to isolate. Out of around 40 kids we have well into double figures isolating now. As a result we're doing half and half classes. I teach in person but also have the laptop on and am streaming to those at home. Has made lesson planning super challenging as I have to plan things for both the at-homers to do in their small space, plus things for the in person people to do.

Which tier are you in Ashworth? We're in tier 3 so can only do under-18s classes at the moment.

I think you're right about the "right now" bit. Facebook groups are also similar in that way. If you don't see it when it happens its gone. I think people liked the immediacy of those platforms but at least anecdotally I find friends now choosing to switch away from Facebook and come back to platforms like this because they are slower paced. If we're talking forums, though not exactly the same, Reddit seems to keep growing and growing. The algorithm does favour posts with immediate traffic but on the less trafficked subreddits like /r/martialarts you have the chance to go back, read and contribute.

I've heard good things from others though don't have any direct experience. They seem to be one of the more professional groups if you aren't going to join a style specific one. -

It's very common in the UK to be part of a wider org like Ashworth said. Mostly for insurance but these groups also come in handy when it comes to laws and regulation, I guess like a union of sorts. Been especially handy if the group is recognised by the government as a governing body during these times as they can seek clarification and permission from the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) for clubs to operate during COVID. In TKD we have one group which represents all ITF (all groups), WT and independants.
