  1. For those running online classes, what kind of content are you doing? I'm going to do my first one on Monday. Am thinking to work on building up some punch combos and sparring combos as the weeks progress. Not a lot we can do regarding forms as most won't have much room at home (I definitely don't).
  2. Not done much TKD specific training but have been running more than usual and just generally focusing on bodyweight exercises. Will be running online classes from Monday.
  3. Soooo much time on my hands right now. Recently rewatched Best of the Best. All time favourite TKD movie. And Kung Fu Hustle which is just genius with all the references.
  4. Being a relatively new school I'm just concerned about drop off when we are able to get going again. At least I'm relatively safe in that I don't have a permanent venue and overheads. I only pay for what I use. I'm still going to rent off the dance school I currently hire and use the time to train myself, film my curriculum and maybe train small groups or one to ones. Need to work out some lessons students can do in their own homes..
  5. When I was operating (now shut!) I was instigating hand washing at the start for everyone followed by anti-bac gel. Lesson would be non contact as much as possible but if we did pad drills everyone got their own personal pad to hold, no sharing, which was then disinfected between classes.
  6. So the UK is following in the footsteps of other European countries and Asian countries and taking steps to limit the spread of coronavirus. It looks like we are creeping towards a total lockdown and from Friday all schools will close with many leisure facilities also closing. We're being advised to limit social contact and not meet in groups so like many martial arts schools I am going to have to shut down for the foreseeable future. Any other instructors experiencing this? What are your plans? I'm hoping to live stream my classes or at least pre-record classes to release to students to keep them going but things aren't looking great and I expect to lose members in the long run.
  7. Thanks for the ideas so far bushido_man96, Nidan Melbourne and sensei8! At the moment I've been trying to get them to work in teams and the best team gets to pick exercises for the rest of the class to do, or we've done it by count but everyone in the room gets to take turns shouting the commands. These sound great, can you expand on them? I can probably guess a few but others not.
  8. Help me out guys! I need some fun creative ways to teach forms to children. Ways to help disguise the fact that they are still practising the same movements to make it fun for them and to preserve my own sanity! Mostly it is the younger ones who I spend lesson after lesson reteaching them the steps. My normal process is to spend a few lessons on the individual movements, both as fundamental line work and as partner application work. Then we train small chunks of movements. Then we put it all together. No problem with the 8, 9, 10 year olds. Big problems with the 5, 6 and 7 year olds. I know it will come with repetition but any ideas for mixing it up so they think they are doing something different each class?
  9. Maybe I'm not understanding properly, but to the bold type above (my emphasis) does that mean you never correct students? Or is this just a special one off training? I can't imagine never offering feedback, I'm very much at the other end of the spectrum and constantly adjusting and correcting.
  10. Its the start of not just a new year but a new decade! Does anyone have any goals or resolutions for this year? I want to work on me this year as have neglected my own fitness and training for too long. On paper I'm eligible to grade again and whilst I'm not testing any time soon, it has made me think about what I'm doing physically and its nowhere near the level I want to be. So that said my goals are: 1. work back up to doing 10km runs, running at least 2 times a week 2. be more consistent with my flexibility and take time every day to stretch Then 3. is hopefully secure a full time venue (tenatively in talks at the moment!)
  11. Happy New Year all! Thought I'd dig this thread out. How did everybody do with their goals in 2019? As for mine I did do more training myself but not as much as I'd hoped. Consistently getting 1 hr a week where my blackbelts and I just train... but limited other training except for general bodyweight exercises and running at home. I didn't hit 100 members unfortunately (only 80!) But we decided ourselves to pull back on new members. Our kids classes are full with a waiting list and our teen and adult classes typically get 10 to 15 regulars. We decided that now we are comfortably paying rent and overheads and not worrying about losing money, we're going to focus on bringing on the quality of our students and let the results do the marketing.
  12. I'm sorry to hear that Bob. Stay strong
  13. Video works great for this. One of the best sparring seminars I went to was where the course leader had a projector and showed sparring clips, broke them down, then had us practice drills specific to that particular combo or counter. I do something similar with my competitors in that I get them to video themselves in competition and send it to me. Then I build up a sparring class for the whole group based on weaknesses or things I want them to improve upon. I think your discussion-based classes would work great in small focused groups do to how much time it would take.
  14. Or maybe buy a bigger pair than she needs and get the tailor to take them in?
  15. As in books? Depends on the style of course but for ITF Chang Hon style Gen. Choi's 15 Volume Encyclopedia and Taekwon-Do (condensed encyclopedia) are the TKD Bibles. Also from the General I would say his Moral Guide Book though not about the techniques themselves. Other books I have: Hee Il Cho's books: The Complete Martial Artist vol I and II The Complete Master's Kick and The Complete Master's Jumping Kick The Complete One & Three Step Sparring Plus his other books on TKD forms FGM Rhee Ki Ha's This is Taekwon-Do For history: A Killing Art by Alex Gillis Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art by GM Kim Bok Man From Creation to Unification Stuart Anslow Few more on my shopping list: Kim Bok Man, Taekwon-Do Defence Against Weapons Stuart Anslow's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do Patterns vol I and II Stuart Anslow's Chang Hon Taekwon-Do Hae Sul
  16. I saw UFC Fight Night 130 in Liverpool a couple of years back. Was really good and about 8 hours of fights. Saw Olympic TKD at London 2012 too. That UFC nigh sounds awesome, and getting 8 hours of fights, that's worth the price of admission. What were your thoughts on Olympic TKD? Did you enjoy the fights? It was really good. Doors opened at about 2pm with some of the prelim fights then the main cars started about 6pm I think. I don't remember leaving till about 11. Amazing atmosphere and well worth the money if you can get tickets. Olympic TKD was good. But I had tickets to the heavyweight finals which was probably the best part. Also got to see the WT demonstration team. This was back in 2012 though and they've had a few rule changes since then so couldn't say what it's like to watch now. quote="bushido_man96"] That would be a fun time. He's getting up their in age, though. Do you know if he still does seminars? I know he was doing them up until a couple of years ago. Not sure if he's done anything more recently.
  17. I'd love to train TKD in North Korea. Twice I've just missed out going due to injury. Would also like to train in Japan as they have a strong ITF TKD presence. Would be awesome to do seminars with people like Bill Wallace but I suppose that's probably not going to happen.

  19. At the moment I just break the classes down into age and then beginner vs advanced. At my old dojang they used to have sparring classes and pad work / circuits classes but these were as add ons to your main class and not a replacement for. What I want to do eventually is a workshop series every month or every other month where we do a more focused class on something as an add on to the main classes. Like have a sparring workshop, or a hosin sul workshop or strength and conditioning workshop.
  20. What goals do you want to complete in the Martial Arts? Places to visit? (Martial Arts related) People you want to train with? Things you want to learn?
  21. Congratulations! Sounds like you really earnt it.
  22. I have to admit I didn't expect such a strong negative response to this. Do you practice hojo undo? (or dallyon in Korean?) I see S&C training as a modern extension of this and whilst the majority of this work should be done outside of class time, its still my job to teach students about it.
  23. The vast majority of Martial Arts lessons incorporate callisthenics, push-ups, sit ups etc. Does anyone incorporate strength and conditioning into their classes? By that I mean weighted exercises using dumbells, barbells etc., muscle activation or plyogility drills?
  24. Hope you had a great day Bob
