Congrats! Tough break with the er.. breaks. Well done for getting it first time though. -
It was an ITF style tournament and apparently it was supposed to stop brawling... I like brawling...

Was sparring in a tournament at the weekend and the ref kept giving me warnings eventually resulting in a deducted point. Only about halfway through the 1st 1 minute round did he tell me that punching more than twice in a combo was forbidden. What kind of stupid rule is that!?! As soon as the fight closes in you can only do 2 punches, then have to pull back to do a leg before going in for a punch again. I wouldn't go so far as to call it my signature move but in my club I'm known for taking a fight in and then boxing my opponents until they escape. I'd done something to my right leg earlier sometime during/after forms (we think it was a pulled hamstring) so I was counting on minimal use of my legs and this rule really limited me on what I could do. I checked the rules before hand and nowhere does it say that punching is limited to 2 techniques only. My coach didn't know about it either until I walked off the mat in a foul mood. Anyone agree with me that only allowing 2 punches is totally stupid? How is that ever going to resemble a real fight at all? IMO it also disrupts the flow of the fight. Once you're in, you want to stay in, not pull back to flick your leg about before being allowed another punch! Referees make me so mad sometimes...

I would hate to have to do the flying side kick... I'm not made to run or jump . Good Luck to you though! I'm sure you'll pass. -
Play normal dodge ball but they are allowed to use a proper block to deflect. They could als hit it with a punch, kick or strike and remain in.

Wow! Congrats! Glad to hear it went good. -
Full time teaching can work for some people. My instructor quit his job to move into to teaching permanently, he used to teach part time before that. Now he does it 7 days a week with about 20 hours class time per week. He doesn't have any other major hobbies (that I know of) and is heavily involved in the work of the national organisation. IMO the prices and very reasonable and I have never felt like I was being treated as just a customer. As for quality of teaching I feel that its excellent. Using tournaments as an example, we have 4 internationals in the club which he has trained from white belt, 2 of whom have won medals at World Championships and our club has been top of the national medals table for several years. Of course this is bound to sound very biased as its my own club I'm talking about but I just wanted to say that full time teaching can work out for some people. Our club's lucky in the fact that we had a large number of students anyway before the instructor decided to go full time and we are well established in the local primary and high schools as a local "sporting team" to join. We can afford to lose students if they aren't willing to train hard and students are not allowed to grade or fail their gradings if they are not at the right standard. If you were going to go into teaching full time I would definately make sure you have a full buisness plan as bushidoman suggested in his original post. Make sure you cover all angles and be prepared for a few months hardship before money starts to roll back in.

Maybe its just a matter of knowing what speed to go at throughout the whole 9 minutes? Based on running for 9 minutes solid running (cutting the 20 seconds out because its easier maths and for some leeway ) you should be averaging 6.6 ish miles per hour. (I think). Perhaps get someone on a bike or something to accompany you and set the pace. When running alone its hard to tell what you're doing and having someone else there will make sure you keep up. Training to a higher intensity will make it a breeze to go back down a level fo your testing so its a good idea to make your goal harder than you have to do.

Form can also mean form as in katas. In this case a form is set sequence of movements and techniques that one practises as part of their learning of a style. Not all style have them though.

UK NAS...
DWx replied to ashworth's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Um I'll be in Crawley on the 29th... not for the NAS, for the UKTA (Taekwondo) Opens... the K2 must be real busy that weekend. -
Has anyone got any good strategies for covering distance? I'm all right at fighting in close, either within sort of punching range or kicking range, but when my opponent is further away I find it really difficult to move fast and not telegraph my techniques. I usually end up getting caught on a counter or I'll end up doing one kick which is kinda far away from any targets. Any combo suggestions that cover ground would be great. Thanks

Depends what you have to wear. The best person to ask would be your instructor, especially if he you can buy through him as he may receive discounts from buying in bulk and being an instructor. For TKD which is light-semi contact, I have been wearing Macho gear. Its cheapish and lighweight but the foam tears after a while so you have to buy new ones. IMO quite good for learning to spar light contact but useless if you spar heavier: http://www.bytomic.com/detail.asp?c_urn=11&show=Combat+Kits&urn=294&pg=1 My latest set for competition is made by Top Ten, I've only tried them once so far, they're heavier but seem to be a lot better quality. They also protect you a lot more so sparring in them can be a lot heavier: http://www.bytomic.com/detail.asp?c_urn=11&show=pgno3&urn=376&pg=3 It will all depend on what you have to wear though so I should ask your instructor first

I don't know whether you're part of a club at the moment (as a student) but it might be worth asking your instructor if you could run a satellite club to start off with. He/She would also be a better person to ask for what your association (if you are affliated with one) requires. They might also know about local laws and stuff like that. ps1 has given you some v good advice though.

Sorry, guess I didn't make myself all that clear. She wasn't screaming from the pain, she just thought there was going to be a lot of pain. Actually she probably ended up making it hurt because she was kicking so much... for some reason she found it absolutely terrifying to have this woman cut the stitches and pull them out. End result is that she had a few scratches from where she'd kicked and caught herself on the scalpel knife thing. As for anaesthesia, its the NHS. Gotta keep costs to a minimum. Hmm on reading my post its really not that clear at all.
