  1. If a blackbelt is easy to attain then you have to question the worth of the rank.
  2. The only ones I've really come across are Tai Chi and Baguazhang. Wikipedia also lists Xingyiquan, but I've not really heard much of that one.
  3. The whole story line actually seems very similar to The Karate Kid.
  4. Welcome to the forums!
  5. Bobbing up and down or "sine wave" is usually an ITF/G. Choi thing. The idea is that you relax your muscles causing your knee to drop and then you rise up and finish with a downward motion. Loads of arguements of whether it works or not or whether it has any actually use. This article goes over the main points comparing it to the usual hip/snap method of power: http://tkdtutor.com/06Concepts/Power/HipSnapWindingSineWave/HipSnapWindingSineWave01.htm It tends to get over exaggerated in tournaments or sometimes people do the movement slightly wrong creating a saw-tooth shape rather than something along the lines of a sine curve. General Choi explaining how it should be done: Hope that helped.
  6. This is kinda similar to something we do in class. Every now and again we have a session where will team up in groups of about 3 or 4 with one older or senior grade student as team captain. Then someone in the class picks a random form we all know and each group has to come up with some way of presenting it; where to stand, where to put "splits" in (like a domino effect etc.), how to to walk on. The team captain has to do all the commands and then all the other groups vote on whose was the best. That team then get to pick the next form. Really we try to get something like they have at the . Not only is it fun to do, you have to work hard to all look identical and be technically correct, you have to know all the commands and you have to be able to be creative.
  7. We've been trying to get hold of one for Christmas but they're sold out everywhere we go. I think that's a pretty good sign that they are good. A family friend has one and even my Dad plays on it (and he's completely technology illiterate). Plus most of the games are not video games in the sense that you have to understand all the buttons and get involved, you just have to swing your arms about and hope that you don't let go of the controller (If this kid can enjoy it and work it out anyone can )
  8. Merry Christmas everyone. This year I'm getting a Wii so my holidays will be spent playing on that rather than studying for my exams
  9. Sounds like a good read
  10. You can try to do the mirror image of a form. I usually get to about the 4th or 5th move and screw it up.
  11. Our instuctor usually orders in a belt per student who is grading. If they all pass they get their belts there and then, if not, they get given them in their next class.
  12. Not done it with burpese yet but we do do pyramid's at training usually. The worst one so far this year was when we had to do crunches going up in 5s to 60 and then back down again. I had to stop and go outside because I was gonna throw up. Really wouldn't wanna do it with burpese as I hate them.. I'd imagine the time constraint would make it 10x worse too.
  13. Always have a towel. Means I can have a shower after too. Found the wierdest thing in my bag on Monday... for some reason I have a rubber band ball.
  14. Congrats to him! You must be proud. Ps. That family tree is huge! He has to know all of it?
  15. I prefer the former I am the former (joking)
  16. Whats the single most important (or weirdest) item you carry to class (besides your gi and sparring kit)? My kit bag is like a sack of bricks, I carry probably twice as much as I will ever need. Most important item though would be my mini- first aid kit with an endless supply of plasters... don't know what the weirdest item is.
  17. Welcome
  18. I have a key ring on my house/car keys which has our club logo on it and I have a small sticker in the back of the car with our club logo and phone no. Other than that I rarely ever carry or wear anything Martial Arts related. Sometimes round the house I'll wear the shirts and hoodies and stuff but rarely in public and all the ones I have don't explicitly scream Martial Artist. The problem with wearing them in public is that people see you and instantly get ideas. They either think you're some sort of supreme champion and avoid you or they try to confront you and make you fight them.
  19. Similar thing happens in this video: And people say spinning kicks are useless...
  20. Wow, that must be real bummer. Kudos to you for continuing to train when lots of people would have given up. I hope all goes well with the surgery.
  21. Happy Holidays all!
  22. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Must be fustrating not having support from your GP. I would keep at the strength exercises they gave you if they aren't causing additional pain, it could help in the end. safetyal's suggestions for alternative exercises are good. Maybe try doing some of them. Your MA life doesn't have to toally end though. If kickboxing is no longer an option maybe a softer art might suit you better? I know Tai Chi gets a bad rap for being for older people, but if you find a good teacher who is willing to show you more of the martial aspect you may like it. In my class I'm the youngest by about 50 years! but my teacher loves to discuss and show me martial applications to the techniques and she spends time with me training some of the moves at more of a combat speed. Best of Luck,
