  1. I dont know about you, but sometimes its hard to see where your training it going (especially in the internal arts). I have been practing Aikido now for about a year and going for my 4th Kyu on Sunday. Resently, although my passion for Aikido has been unwavering, I have worried about its martial effectiveness. It is easy to see where such apparently effective martial arts get there motivation. I felt like this until yesterday. Yesterday, was nothing all that special. No real change to our normal lesson, other than the fact that we had a different commity member (6th-8th Dan) take our class. My normal Sensei, usually gives very little away, but like I said earilier this can be a little dishearting, but I think in some ways she is testing us. However, this other Sensei, was for lack of a better word, amazing. The first time I have every feared for the safety of my limbs. Dont get me wrong he is no bully, but lets be frank, this is not snooker we are studying, this is martial arts, more specifially Aikido. He did the basic Aikido technique on me (ikkyo) and I was amazed at how quickly a got to the mat and the pain in my shoulder was endless. As he did this to me from a full nelson submission hold which I had on with all my strength. It was like the guy had no bones! So my point is, do you guys sometimes think, OH MY GOD, this stuff just does not work. And then get a sharp knock back into reality.
  2. Well, I think they are all good with the right amount of practice. But most Judo players find what they really like and use it.
  3. From what I know of FMA Kali is pretty good. Just out of interest, what is the difference both history wise and techniques wise between Kali and Silat?
  4. As I understand it, if you dont want to cross train, I would go with KM. It does unarmed and armed combat pretty effectively as most ranges. Although MT is AMAZING at its preferred ranges, it lacks in others and no weapons training. So if you were going to MT and Kendo/Iaido/kenjutsu/kali/ecrima or something then that would be pretty good. Ofcourse, you might wanna do some grappling to. Depends really.
  5. Ahhhhhhhhh............. Oh I see. Randori.
  6. I dont like Tsuri komi, it requires a lot of arm strength to get their arm up, I also think it takes some time to actually proform. I much prefer Ippon Seoi Nage. As you turn in then you could apply the atemi do the throw, which is pretty powerful, then run.
  7. I have a similar situation, I am 6'0 and about 170Ibs, the guy I usually ne waza and randori with is about 6'3 and has gotta be alteast 190Ibs. In those situations you just gotta be quicker and once you have them, dont go for the Osaikomi (hold down), but strait for a submission, chokes and arms locks are usually the best. Also learn some submissions from less advantagous postions. As you might not be able to get them to lie flat out for a Jiji Gatame (arm bar), so try something like Ude Gatame.
  8. When someone writes JJ, I always assume the Japanese Art.
  9. In Aikido we to unify the body and mind. A healthy body promotes a strong mind, however a strong mind promotes a healthy body. If you lose one then you lose both. What I mean by healthy, is not rippling mucsles, but the ablilty to carry out set tasks as powerfully and effectiently as possible. The one point is that the mind controls the body and not the other way around when you are talking about external physical tasks. So the mind is more important.
  10. Yes, yes I do.................. Jumping Tai Otoshi's are used quiet alot in Judo competition. I have a great photo in a book of Neil Adams doing it. Pretty amazing.
  11. Shotouchi then Tai otoshi? I might just work.................! The best one I have seen is a jumping Tai Otoshi, truely amazing!
  12. Japanese or Okinanawan Goju? Not that there is a HUGE difference. Both Yamaguchi and Miyagi were amazing martial artists. Its a really great Karate style. Its sort of like the Japanese version of Wing Chun.
  13. Its illegal, it should stay that way. Harmless in itself. However it can lead the young and insecure onto heavier drugs and the thought of some stoned guy behind the wheel of a car is frighening! Jim Carrey says it best in the film "Liar Liar" "STOP BREAKING THE LAW A$$HOLE!"
  14. Most Aikido training begins with LARGE circles requiring you Uke to "follow" the techniqe. However as you get better and better, the circles become smaller and smaller. Thats the difference between the Tenkan movements, (which I think you were discribing) and the Irimi's. Irimi are a lot more subtle, but require more training. With regard to striking, the strikes you have thus discribed ie gyaku tsuki, require a large area of exchange from the hip to the point of impact. However in Aikido, no such strikes excist. When using Te Gatana, the movement is small. The atemi in most cases is not the drop your attacker, but to move his/her mind, so you stop them thinking about what you are about to do to them. The strikes in Aikido, require that step forward into your partners place. To control the center of the combat area, sorta like how the Planets spin around the sun. Its important to control the center, once their, all manor of avenues open for strikes, projections and pins. Judo and Aikido vary greatly, but also cross over in certain places. Judo, as Kano wanted, is a very scienfic art. Its all about leavers and physics. The throws are very precise, everything has a place. In Aikido, we never talk of science. Only about Ki energy. We try to understand how this energy moves and how best to manipulate it, change its direction and so fourth. Its open alot more to interpretation. Aikido throws are on the the basis of relaxation, Judo throws being the same in one respect, if you are using to much strength its probably wrong. But they do require more "physical ability" that perhaps Aikido ones do. What style of JJ do you study?
  15. I would say the opposite, Judo is more fighting and application. JJ, is more striking/throwing/locking and breaking. Basically Japanese Jujutsu is more complete.
  16. Basically what TJS said, but I would add that TJJ has weapons training to.
  17. Gentle is not the word I would use. I would use subtle. Just because it requires little movement, does not always mean that it is gentle. One of my Sensei's other students was telling me of a fight she saw, in the local pub we go down to after Aikido. And my Sensei (female about 5'9) threw a man threw a solid fire door. Now thats not gentle to me. I think in the dojo, generally, Aikidoka have the welfare of their Uke in mind and dont want to drop them to hard or across knee's and various other joint maipulations as well as strikes. In reality, I would have no problem doing any of these things. A great example of this would be a shihonage, now I always let go of the throw when standing, however, in reality you would smash them into the floor, causing atleast 3 breaks and possibly something unpleasant to the spine and neck. I think they are just as powerful as a good Judo hip throw, however, they take longer to get to the same level of power. Just in my opinion ofcourse.
  18. TAI CHI NOT AN MA?! Amazing, I have no idea why people has this opinion of such a fanastic style. Both practically and structurally sound. But some people can never be convinced.
  19. MTfighter, sometimes I find your posts disgusting. No a disabled person is never doing to be as good as Renzo Gracie, Yoshida or O Sensei Ueshiba. But most dont want to be and they should be aloud to practice the art. TAICHI HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SELF DEFENCE.... LMAO! Trolls, cant leave with 'um, however I could live without them..... As for Karate Slippers, I dont think they will help. You should find a style that has minimal contact for the first few years. Only to give time for your feet to fully heal. I would suggest one of the Wudang Kung Fu, Tai Chi, HsingI or Ba Gua.
  20. Personally JJ figher I think all TMA's work. But without sparring and two man training/ rolling/ randori you'll never know how well it works for you. Osu
  21. NYC is the mecca of all martial arts. I suggest: Hsing I Ba Gua Kykyoshin Karate Shotokan Western Boxing BJJ Judo Aikido
