Atemi Waza, are basically strikes that can kill, Aikido in principle is directly opposed to this. This is the reason why we are not encouraged to use them. I do agree that a strike can easily end a confrontation, but I would rather stick with what I know best and knock them out with a nasty throw. Be Well

No, aikido has lots of strikes. We are just really not encourged to use them. They are called Atemi Waza, they are all strikes to pressure points and vital areas. The aspect of muiltimple attackers is covered alot in Aikido. Depends on the sort of attack of course, O Sensei always used the discription of a whirl wind surrounding the Aikidoka, so using one oppenent to shield you from another using his body. Ofcourse, we deal with more situations than that of being encirculed. Also being held from behind and another is striking you etc. Also being held to the floor by several people. I can answer any further questions you have in detail if you wish? Be Well

I guess so Jade, your great sense of humour completely eludes me.

I have mastered none of my Aikido Ki tests, although I can do some of them. Unbendable arm, and some of the Unmoveale body techniques.

Aikido, our founder made Aikido based for real life applications, so we do alot of muiltiple attacks, especially in the higher grades.

I study Aikido, although not a traditional Chinese soft style, it does have a chinese and Japanese heritage. Soft styles take alot longer to master than there hard style brothers. I think that a good soft stylist would stand a good chance of defeating an equal oppenent of a harder style. This is my reasoning. As soft styles take a lot less energy, you can keep fighting effectively for a lot longer. The strikes, tend to be more hard hitting, on the inside, Bruce Lee discribe it as getting hit with a chain and a iron ball. IN the soft arts, there are very few blocks, removing the idea that all attacks must be stopped by blocks, allows the soft practioner more movement, attacking an attack, rather than blocking it. Also, with Aikido, you dont feel the lock, until it is finally applied, so you dont really have that reflex action of quickly removing your arm. This is only my opiniuon.

Anybody do Aikido?
Kensai replied to Kensai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I practice Ki aikido. Yea, I know about the other forums, but some of the Aikidoka are very much up themselves. Lots of people say that there are no strikes in Aikido, however we do do Atemi Waza, which are extreme effective. -
How are Karate and Kempo different? Are they related?

Sounds like a Mcdojo to me! I my dojo, you have to be 18 to get your black belt. I think that is good system, because you are mature enough to understand the skills that you have aquired.

As we are all correcting Shuriken Girl, there is no such thing as a Tang Soo Doo dojo it is called a dojang.

Question on quickest way to end the trouble
Kensai replied to Nickgarren's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would let them throw the first attack, as all good aikidoka do, then I would probably drop his punk @ss and stamp on him until he bled! -
Your art?

Many thanks. I have a great deal of respect for Kano's Judo. To be honest I dont really like the Gracie family arrogance to other Martial Arts. have you heard of Emin? a 5th level Wing Tsun practioner that wants to fight a Gracie, as they keep bad mouthing other arts. Type in Wing Tsun in google and go to the first site I think it is and read the "FORMAL CHALLENGE". I dont really believe in that sort of stuff myself, all martial arts are respectable, its a shame that the people who do them are not. Did you know that Kano himself went to train in a little Aikido, and even sent some of his best students to O Sensei Ueshiba. -
Jade I can see that you should perhaps take reading lessons, I wrote that " there is to much to read", so I would like to spell it out and say "there is to much to read, could someone give me a quick low down". mumble mumble, Jade bloody smart @ss! mumble mumble

I train in Ki Aikido, under Sensei Williams and Sensei Margret, who trained with Sensei K Tohei (10th Dan) and Sensei Abbe (10th Dan). Could you tell me more about BJJ, I know very little about it, any good links? -
Taichi is if people are in a coma, your ignorance even surpass's my own. The westernised idea of fast movements has obivously blinded you. The TaiChi exercises/forms are done slowly to produce strongh legs, arms and torso etc, when practiced at full speed, the techniques are devastating. I had a play fight with a friend of mine that does Taichi, pretty nasty. But dont take my word for it ask a taichi master to spar, thats if they agree, I am sure even your ignorant mind will be impressed.

This is a really heated post. Whats been going on? There is far to much to read.

I would take Aikido Kamae, Aikido's one and only stance.

Taichi is useless in real combat. Ummm I assume you know very little about it then. KBShibs is really depends on what you are looking for. Most MA's are good for self defence, and they are really good fun, thats if you get a good Sensei. Go to as many classes as you can, find out about the different styles, what they are good and bad at etc.... Make sure that you like the feel of the place. As I do Aikido I can help you out on some of your points. Aikido, was created to take on both skilled and unskilled opponents, the techniques are soft, allowing you to say throw someone with out really hurting them, or take a knife away, move out the way of a kick etc. As the techniques were created to do the minimal amount of damage it is unlikely that you will get arrested for using them. However, if the person keeps coming at you, then the techniques evolve into something a little more......damaging. We train with the sword, Staff and knife. Hope this helps.
