Oh man, who said knockout gass was allowed in grappling?
-
I've had the dryer sheet fly out of my uniform too. Very embarassing. Another time I was at the university club and I was sparring a guy a few belts ahead of me and a full head shorter. We went back and forth a few times when he suddenly threw a side kick straight at my "boys". I was so shocked I threw an X block down and jumped at the same time kicking my legs out to the side to get out of the way. It looked like I was riding the kick like a mule! We both had to stop we were laughing so hard.

Comparing Korean Systems
niel0092 replied to SBN Doug's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
We dont do any weapons unfortunately. As per an earlier question my TKD school has its first official sweeps taught at purple belt (9mo to 1yr) and again at blue and brown belt. The first throw is at brown belt. Locks and such begin at green belt for testing purposes but I remember learning some as early as yellow belt durring the course of a class. Official here meaning required by my school for grading. -
People seem to forget that we do other things in TKD than high kicks. A shot to the groin , elbow to the face... run like mad That's TKD too.

Very intersting. I'm sure that alot of this sort of thing happens in the MA world. Instructors invariably want to show a lineage that strenghthens the claim that their art is "true" or "good" for lack of better words. Others claim something else, emotions get caught up in the mess... Ah, the evils of the marketing department. On a side note the HWD school was just too far away for me to make it to consistantly. Fully across town through rush hour 3+ times a week was just to aggrivating. Not good to increase stress when stress releaf is one of the reasons I do MA. The search for a new school continues...

Thanks KSN that site was pretty cool. They do seem to have a, umm, bit of a HRD slant to the history though. I'm going to check out the school on Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi folks. I was looking at this site the other day and was thinking of checking out the school. Take a look and tell me what you think. http://www.hwarangdomn.com/ I've done about two years of TKD but hwarangdo looks like it's got some other cool things to learn (weapons, trapping, ground fighting) while at the same time keeping the stand up striking and ethical code that makes TKD right for me. Well, it should I guess, being from Korea. Also, to give you an idea of where I'm comming from, here's the link to my current school. http://www.mntaekwondocenter.com Thanks!

Effective Hook kick
niel0092 replied to TKD_McGee's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
When doing a hook kick with the lead foot I like to step in front rather than behind with the rear leg. I find it easier to get my hip turned over properly that way. Try both ways and tell us what you think. -
Hey Old Kicker, I see by the web site you posted we go to the same school! About time some one from MN TKD center joined the chats. Now if I can just figure out who you are

Speaking of Mt Everest and repetitive kicking, we do this drill called "mountains". You face a partner and do one round kick -they follow. Then you do two kicks and so on up to 15 kicks without setting your foot down. That's the up portion of the mountain. Now you go down 15-14-13...1. By the time your done it's something around 225 kicks per leg...then class really begins.

full contact TKD
niel0092 replied to Prodigy-Child's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We punch to the head constantly in self defense training, and backfists, and knife hands, and grabs/headlocks, and... Why don't we punch to the head? I think it's because of the Olympics. TKD had to be suffeciently different from other MAs already in the games (ie. judo and boxing). Whether or not TKD allowed punches to the face prior to 1988 when it was an exibition sport at the games I couldn't tell you. -
We do push up's, but not all the time. According to the USTU you can get a BB in 32 months but the average at our school is 4+ years.
-
I disagree with that... some schools will focus more on sport but a kick to the groin is a kick to the groin no matter what art you study.

I suppose you could go to a star trek covention. I mean, they have klingon language books & tapes, why not Klingon MA videos?

Anyone that's taken a back kick to the gut while sparring knows that the hugo doesn't offer much...(wham)...ohh... protection. -
confusion on forms (aka patterns)
niel0092 replied to tekkenchaos's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Different ranks are judged seperately so a yellow belt wont be competing with a blue belt nor a blue vs a black. As far as what forms are allowed, thats up to the tournament officials. Chon-Ji is ITF, right? I'm WTF so the forms that are allowed are the Taeguks (1- and now the Palgwe forms (1-. Other types of forms such as Chong bong are usually used in the creative/non-traditional form category. That's been my experience so far...and welcome to this club! -
Angus does seem to be one of a kind. Here's to you buddy! (lifts a pint)

Behind Every Good Non-Classical Martial Artist . . .
niel0092 replied to ChangWuJi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think the key here is really the mind body connection. Without the necessary level of training and focus so much of a MA is lost. What good is a punch with out force? What use is a forcefull punch without the will to throw it when you need to? Only many many hours of training can lead you to the physical skill and i feel that many more are needed after physical mastery in order to bring the mental aspect of the arts to bear. We've all seen some of this, focus, determination, balance, and awarness, and i hope we all continue to do so. These are the things that seperate the MAist from someone that just works out in a gym. -
TKD's very little blocking
niel0092 replied to mastertae's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
First of all I'd like to say that there are quite a few blocks in TKD(low, high, inside, outside, X, to name just a few), they just don't get used in sparring all the time. I'm not really sure why but it does seem to be the case. Typically in sparring I'll use a net block to cover my face and ribs as I throw a round kick. As for improving timing, repitition is the key. Practice counters with a partner constantly. Start at a slower speed and work up to full. Watch how their body moves before durring and after they attack. Use the clues their body sends to let you know when and how to counter. Just be sure to block in case they trick you into moving to soon/late! -
full contact TKD
niel0092 replied to Prodigy-Child's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
As a TKD student this is something I wonder about also. How do they do it in other arts? Do you pull the punch or aim slightly off ie forehead instead of nose to avoid serious injury? While I dont exactly relish the idea of a right cross to my face in practice I would prefer it was done there then "on the street". I should say that we do punches to the face in drills, just not in sparring at my school. -
So it's been a few days now, have you seen this guy again? What's happening with the situation? I need my crazy Angus story fix!

Comparing Korean Systems
niel0092 replied to SBN Doug's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Delivery of tech's: We're taught 8 "basic" strikes (striking surfaces actually) with the hand by orange belt (4-5 months). Fore fist punch, back fist, hammer fist, knife hand, ridge hand, spear, palm, arc strike (open hand, keep fingers together except thumb as if you were to pick up a glass, strike to the throat). Add variations to the tech's ie jab vs hook punch, inside, outside, spin, palm up, palm down, etc and other oddball strikes (eagle claw, vulcan eye gouge-for lack of a better term) and the number goes up quickly. As for kicks most of the basics can be done spinning so: front, round, side, back, inside crescent, outside crescent, ax, hook, spin heel, eh... you can all think of more I'm sure. Add knees, elbows, your head, and any unconventional way to strike with a part of your body add you've got so many options it will make your head spin!
