Kickboxing @ the YMCA
unknown replied to unknown's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Why shouldn't I? A lot of different types of athletes lift weights at the YMCA. I see a lot of the same people every single day and I've gotten to know them and their athletic backgrounds, so why shouldn't I tell them about my athletics pursuits when they ask me? It's not like I go around announcing it to the entire world like some martial artists however is somebody asks me what sport I train in I tell them that I am a full contact kickboxer and a grappler. As for their "certification" that was the point that I was trying to drive home. That they are "certified" by the "YMCA kickboxing association". -
In Canada you can be charged with carrying a concealed weapon if you are caught carrying an asp baton.

You boxed and kickboxed in the past eh? Then why would you short change yourself get into point fighting? You are going to develop bad habits if you are not careful and those bad habits could hurt you in the kickboxing/boxing arena

You just have to build a tolerence within your nervous system. It'll come with time.

A cool drill we did last night.

Wouldn't it just be easier to spar with people? -
First off, most MMA fighters come from predominantly wrestling and/or grappling backgrounds - they have limited striking experience. So they are not going to go for a head kick in a MMA fight. A good grappler or wrestler will take a guy throwing a head kick with ease so if you are not a good kicker it is unwise to throw a head kick in a MMA fight. How ever I've seen a few head head kicks thrown in MMA. Guys like Frank Shamrock, Chuck Liddell, Guy Mezger, Yuki Kondo have all thrown head kicks. I've even seen Tito Ortiz throw a head kick when he fought Randy Coture.

Breaking boards and bricks is kind of cheesy! People who swear by it say that it is a method of building power; however most good boxers out there can hit harder than Martial Artists and they don't encorporate board or brick breaking in their training. It's nothing mystical or anything - it is just physics. If you hit something properly, it'll break.

Those tactics you describe are called fakes. -
How you've dealt with verbal things
unknown replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That is an awesome quote. I heard some American President say that at a press conference but I can't remember who. Either way that is the way I think about verbal harrassment. -
Quickest submission moves.

Look at some judo and BJJ books and you'll find some nice chokes that can be put on quite quickly. -
Kickboxing @ the YMCA

Yeah I hear ya! -
I lift weights at the YMCA and I noticed on the board that they were having kickboxing classes from a certified instructor. So I watched one of the classes and all I got to say is that it was a complete joke. They had some gym bunny bimbo teaching and I don't know where her certification was attained but she was making all the classic mistakes that beginners make when throwing a punch or a kick. This is the prime reason why people don't take me seriously when I tell them that I am a fighter......damn People just fail to realize that there is a distinction between kickboxing and cardio-kickboxing.

A lot of females like kickboxing due to the workout they get from it. So it's a fitness thing for them. When it comes to fighting, a lot of females prefer kickboxing because of the lack of physical contact as opposed to a grappling art. To be honest with you many females just don't feel very comfortable with grappling with a guy and I don't blame them. I wouldn't feel too comfortable in grappling with a female because I don't want her accusing me of copping a feel off her.

I just pay $60 for the jiu jitsu classes. I got access to the weights and heavy bags so it's not bad. Before I used to pay $50 a month for both the kickboxing and jiu jitsu classes however now it shot up to $85 a month which is *. My kickboxing coach and I train at another gym 3 times a week and he doesnt charge me so it's all good.

I've learned quite a few. However you must realize one thing if a person is attacking you with a knife - 9 times out of 10 you will get cut. So just make sure they do not cut you and any areas of your body where there are any veins or arteries (inside of forearms, neck, inside of legs, arm pits etc.) If the person is trained in knife fighting? Good luck, they'll most likely kill you.
