  1. okay im in there ..like swimwear...how does this work again?
  2. unless you want to lose time training due to injuries like a pulled groin muscle which is not plesant at all..or torn hamstring..or tendon strains...both also very painful..then go ahead.. jump right in there and go for it...if you are smart you will take the time to warm up and strecth properly....flexibility takes a while to develop..over time you need less and less to warm up and get those muscles ready..as far as getting caught in a combat situation..theres nothing to say that you will not pull a muscle however in these types of situations youre worried about alot of other things..i think a pulled muscle is not up there on the list..and also the more you warm up and strecth the more flexible you will become and remain even when not warmed up...( example i can walk out onto the dojang floor and jump into a full split without warming up only because after years of strecthing i remain flexible at all times )
  3. except for the egyptian pilot two years ago that decide to end his life and all souls on board by plunging his plane into the ocean (forgot that one?)i had no idea first kickbutt that was youre instructor nor about the radio martial arts this is great.(when i first posted the thread "taekwon TV" this is exactly the type of martial arts coverage i was envisioning but only on radio) what else you holdin out on me? _________________ Javier l Rosario bayshore new york instructor taekwondo/hapkido "whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to kick your ass" [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2001-11-07 20:02 ]
  4. lori i think most of it has to do with age..we think were invincible when we are in the service..and that young...i was no angel when i was in (not that i am now either) but a big part of military culture has always been drinking and smoking...and i guess at a young age you havent done enough damage to make it really effect your breathing...the last two years in the service i was actually the command fitness cordinator....and at that time i was a regular smoker about a pack a day..and could still run circles around the base everyday..sometimes i would stay up all night drinking and smoking and somehow find the reserve energy to run the drills for the day sometimes with only two hours of sleep (no way i can see me doing that now)so not only did i need to complete the days drills but make sure i did them better than anyone else since i was the one to set the example..my master chief at that time used to run 12 miles each way to the base and back home while smoking cigars..he was crazy ..despite that there was no one on the base that could keep pace with this lunatic...still overall looking back i would never have put the first cigarette to my mouth..its all about peer pressure and believe me if your in the military you will smoke...even now i find it hard to resist when going out on the weekend...funny thing is that any other time ..if i even smell it i get nasueas..... DONT SMOKE there is nothing benifical in smoking
  5. strecthing ..one of the most important part of your warm up routine..unfortunately it may only be done in the first ten to fifteen minutes of an average class....much longer is required to get a "benificial" strecth especially when you are a beginer ....as you become more flexible you would require less time ..its good to start your streching early before class ..if you can get to class a half hour before and start then..you will feel a big difference in your performance....there are many types of strecthes rather than going through the tedious task of naming them and trying to explain them i would recomend getting a book on strecthing..and also asking your sahbumnim about different streches...do them slowly and hold but dont bounce....and be patient it sometimes takes months or even years to start doing splits....slowly and patiently you will feel and see the results..good luck..

  16. good point submission..you dont have to achieve a black belt in each style..as a matter of fact you dont have to be a black belt in any style to be an effective fighter (im sure we all know blackbelts who coudnt put up a fight with a little girl) the whole point of cross training is to take what works and implement that into youre arsenal.....example a front kick....alot of martial artist think a front kick is too basic..they might not use it because it doesnt look fancy.....its still one of the most easy to use kicks and if you know how to put your body behind it very powerful...but instead of developing this further they wanna rush in and learn..spinning wheel kicks or jumping flying side kicks..kicks which are difficult to land (although in the movies they never miss) its better to develop techniques which you know will work rather then those which may..(id rather have a front kick that i know will find its target 85% of the time than a jumping wheel kick that may only find it 50% of the time)and this type of training or selective cross training is where you will benifit most in becoming an actual fighter...which is more important than being able to tell everyone that you hold a black belt...
  17. "My opinion is to crosstrain in styles from same region, if crosstrain at all." there is no doubt as to the advantages of crosstraining...however as far as techinique... goes its best to train on what works..although what youre suggesting as far as same region may be less complicated..i would say some of the more dangerous combinations such as taekwondo kicks with western boxing are quite effective and one developed completely seperate from the other..but when combined its beautiful..
  18. you must be tired of breathing..if you even dream of slapping me make sure you wake up and apologize

  22. before considering cross training you should have a good foundation in one martial art..its good to cross train but i wouldnt reccomend it for begining students only becuase it winds up being too confusing and this does more harm then good..and although spparring is great for practicing "fighting" even better is self defense drills..these are techniques one may actually use in a combat situation..also the best place to implement crosstraining techniques (although my dojang is primarily taekwondo..when doing self defense alot of hapkido is done) but again a student should make the decision to crosstrain only after getting a strong foundation in one particular martial art..then take it from there..

  24. well at first it may be easy kickbutt..and of course we all know how cool it looks ..cant have a demo without the pine..however its main benifit or objective. ..is to improve and perfect.. focus..speed and proper excecution of technique..as a beginer you may only break wooden boards..(thats easy) however as you advance and you seek new challenges you can move onto..bricks..concrete slabs..cinder blocks..(not easy and if not properly trained will result in serious injuries) and when youre really up there raw stone (my grandmaster smashes pieces of raw stone with a ridge hand strike.. i cringe just watching it..)or corral .. some masters have been known to break pieces of steel these are examples of power breaks..you also have speed breaks..breaking object as they fall..or thrown at you..or taking the neck of a glass bottle off without having the bottle fall or cutting your hand off on the glass in the process..(when done by a master it looks easy..it is very hard..i still cannot do it)many martial artist who are against breaking for onre reason or another always put on a smug face and say "boards dont hit back" (as if they are sooo smart that they just thought that up on the spot..its a line that was made famous in the bruce lee movie ENTER THE DRAGON..no disrespect to bruce but ive heard it so many times its corny to me now..some of them even try to say it with the chinese accent..they crack me up) i say yeah boards dont hit back but i do..and since i can put my hands through bricks iim really not worried about being attacked by some cornball line someone may have been practicing in the mirror (hey you talkin to me?) besides all that i love breaking things and having the audience gasp then applause..thank you ill be signing autographs afterwards..lol
