  1. Hi & welcome to KF Just post your questions and we'll try to help you out.
  2. Have you asked your instructor if your association do/offer instructional DVD's or if it's possible to record sessions? Some associations that I've belonged to either have developed their own DVD's or offer online vid's that you can download. Of course, I've belonged to associations that don't too
  3. To be honest, the better question would be which association and instructor would I go it. There are very good asian instructor and there are bad ones, just like any other race/ethnicity. Try out both and make an informed decision. Like the answers already given, check them both out. What you don't want to do it start training at a "McDojang" where you basically throw your money at something that isn't worth it (and that in turn will give a bad rep for the art). As for what is the differences between TKD and TSD, it depends on the association and implementation. One mate of mine, said it was totally different (forms, sparring, etc), While another mate who trained elsewhere with another TKD association said that it was very similar apart from the forms. I currently do TSD and I have to agree, it is very similar to Shotokan karate - but different enough to keep me interested
  4. Congrats on your 5th Kyu and glad that you're a lot better
  5. I believe Safroot has started Kyokushin karate
  6. Hi & welcome to KF What MA do you do?
  7. The problem with trying get the correct origin of the martial arts is the lack of historical records (written), secretive histories and political circumstances. A lot of the historic timelines are "hearsay". Besides there are so may different types of martial arts, I guess the "most common" origin (especially with eastern MA's) would be from Buddhabadra who travelled from Indian to China. However years before that there were manuscripts on wrestling, gladiatorial combats, etc...
  8. lol, it'll be like that for a while, learning during class and once you get home, the mind goes blank Anyway, there's a couple of things that you can do... 1. Youtube, eg Kyokushin Techniques 2. DVD's, eg Kyokushin-Kai Karate - From Beginner To Black Belt 3. Books, eg Mas Oyama's Complete Karate Course 4. If any of the students live near you (and your friendly with them), see if they want to do some out of class training
  9. Thanks mate
  10. She stays away from anything with a high iron intake. She can't take any vitamin C supplements, because it promotes the absorbtion of iron. She has also cut out a lot of soda, especially store bought stuff with high fructose corn syrup. Some little things like that. Thanks mate Well, I've been in discomfort and pain for the last two weeks. Visited my GP, I've been advised to stop the martial arts for a couple/few weeks and have been prescribed Naproxen for the pain (however not sure if the meds or the dose is giving me the bad stomach), so going to try to see the GP again today. The GP doesn't want to give any more advice (unless I get worse), I can understand that as they aren't specialists...
  11. Hi and welcome to KF What style of karate do you practice?
  12. Give it a couple of days after your first class, as you may be a bit sore Then just practice what you did in class (basic punches, kicks, blocks - remember the technique at this stage, not speed or power), you may also want to start working on push-ups, sit-up and squats. If you also remember the first kata, Kyokushin Taikyoku Sono Ichi, you can practice that (if not, check out this site). But apart from that, after all it would only be your second class, so just ease yourself into it. No one is expecting you to get everything spot on (as everyone makes mistakes, even the experienced karate-ka). Mentally, I would also say, go to it like you did the first class
  13. I agree with sensei8 & Wastelander, if you're interested in it, try it and find out. MMA isn't for everyone but if you're questioning on whether or not you would/wouldn't like it, the only way is to experience it
  14. While 7-9 hours (8 hours being average) of sleep per night is a common goal, it does really depend on the individual. The question for you is... Are you able to do the things that you need to do during the day. Why should we have eight hours' sleep?
  15. Cool, good luck, let us know how you get on What kata will you be doing?
  16. Cool Glad you liked it...
  17. While I don't know him or his association personally, I would just like to list a couple of points... 1. They seem to, at least, follow the WTF and the UMA (possibly even be a member of one or both of those federations) - due to the logos used and the people that he has trained under. 2. The prices seem reasonable compared to a lot of other TKD (or even other MA associations). 3. While there is no mention on prices of gradings and other things like insurance, etc. The monthly fees are clearly stated. Personally, I would say give it a go. You've done/doing both Goju Ryu & Shotokan karate so provided you don't sign up for a years contract straight away, you should be able to feel on whether or not this association is for you
  18. I believe that it's down to the individual child, as they all develop differently. While some associations will offer classes for those as young as 3 (eg Karate Tots), I believe that the average the age is around 5.
  19. I agree And unfortunately like any family there will always be the "black sheeps" (eg McDojo's/McDojang's) and the family members who believe that they are better than you........
  20. Yeah Oh well, back to playing the waiting game for my referral...
  21. Thanks guys @Safroot, While I'm not allergic to ibuprofen and I am asthmatic but it doesn't seem to trigger it.
  22. Thanks mate, what diet changes did she do?
