  1. Point sparring ain't the best but it ain't all that bad. It teches you to go in without taking hits and can help build up defense. And about the pulling ur punches thing. My karate dojo does point sparring...i have no trouble watsoever not pulling punches. In fact there have been very few matches in class or in tournaments where I haven't got a warning from judges However, i think a complete lack of full-contact is not as good as some. I plan to create my own style and open a school one day...i won't have full-contact all the time...that would be un-necessary and probably do more damage to the students than it was worth...oh well, w/e
  2. Hey all. I love to kick, so I need strong legs, yeah I know that muscle doesn't neccessarily mean that my kicks will be more powerful and can infact mak me slower and less flexible but...oh well. I'm only 15, I weigh about 145lbs. and am about 5'7 1/2". I can leg press 510lbs. How bout you guys?
  3. go for it man, i dun have the money to join another MA, so instead i kinda steal techniques i find and study other styles through books, video, internet...which gives me some bse in other styles, but its basicaly to strengthen my own personal style as well as my Karate
  4. speedy recovery my martial arts brethren. Peace y'all
  5. shotokan offshoot? its created by a different person...Onohri Ohtsuka(not sure if spelling is right) he was a jui jitsu master.
  6. I think the one hit kill is nice, but alot of times unneccessary, which doesn't mean that karateka can't not kill people. I like to integrate moves from many styles, but if my life depended on it, the punch i'd use would prolly be the Karate reverse punch...juss alotta power...lol, i'm a kicker tho muay thia rounhouse usually does the trick...
  7. I'm a southpaw(left handed fighter) but I can fight either way, my right leg is slightly better than my left, my left hand is stronger in some ways than my right, the bicept is bigger on me left arm even tho i werk it out as much as my right...but hey, the body is how it is...peace my martial arts brethren
  8. Thanx fer ur warm welcome
  9. TKD has its uses, i don't take it personally btu i integrate some of their great kicking techniques. I love to kick, I'm the best in my class(not to brag er anytin) One of my fellow karatekas in my class has a friend he figths with alot in TKD and he say i fight like him...but if he get past my leg, which doesn't happen often, i still got me hands. I've seen some tkd sparring and soemtimes they tend to not use their hands at all, and moreseo, have their hands down. Could someone, maybe a tkd stylist tell me what the deal with that is, i ain't dissin you er nottin.
  10. Hey all! I'm new here, just started a couple of days ago. I am currently a purple belt in Wado-Ryu Karate with about 5yrs in total of MA experience. I should eb going for my brown belt soon. I also enjoy a variety of martial arts, i do not limit myself. I see the importance of integrating techniques from various other styles into a more personal syle of martial art. Whcih I'm pretty sure was Bruce Lee's whole JKD ideology. I am a teenager and am completley obsessed with MA. I think its great that there are forums like this to interact with fellow martial artists and give our opinions on certain topics. Anyways, dat's it. Peace Out
  11. I think some of y'all are underestimating boxing. I agree martial arts in theory is more powerful, and you can talk crap about them, but y not try fighting one of 'em? Once they get past ur legs, they should easily be able to out punch you. I'm a free-style martial artist, specializing in Wado-Ryu Karate, since that is the art i formally take. I incorperate boxing, its great! Boxing punches may not have the power of some Karate techniques but they are well guarded from punches and evade well, alas...some good kicking, which is proably my forte(I love that thai roundhouse ) well, the are gonners. And grappling...well that would involve getting in close, which...unfortunatley for grapplers, is the boxing forte. But if they get 'em down, its game set and match. Anyone else like the grappling techniques where you get a rear choke on your opponent take 'em down with you on the bottom and wrap your legs around 'em? Pretty much impossible to get out of(me dad taught me that one, he's a fantastic grappler)....unless of course they bite and scratch at you...lol
  12. of course, i'd prolly lose if i fought such a powerful style like Muay Thai, i'd prefer not to do so under their rulez. But hey man, go for it. Just don't be surpirsed when you get knocked out
  13. Grappling is great for maybe one on one school ground brawls, but I doubt its effectiveness on the street. Some aspects would probably work, like choking your opponent. i take Wado-Ryu Karate but I consider myself a free-stylist due tot he fact that I don't limit myself. I learn and integrate a wide variety of techniques from different styles, creating a personalized fighting style made for me. Kinda like a custom t-shirt, the material comes from elsewhere but you decide what goes on it and where. I think that's what Bruce Lee wanted as far a JKD principles go. But anyways, I'm primarily a striker, although grappling is good and definatley fun to practice. I'd have to say, if the fight went to the ground, I'd proabbly use my grappling skills to get on top of my opopnent and ground and pound him. But if he has friends, you could always use it to either extricate yourself from your oppoent and get up, or use it to hold the guys hostage ya know? Kinda like a "You take oen step closer and I'll break you friend's arm"
  14. Duane "Bang" Ludwig. He is a Muay Thai Boxer. He's been in KOTC(king of the cage) as well as K1. He once fought this street fight and whooped him real good, I love seeing "street fighters" getting busted by martial artists.
  15. I take Wado-Ryu Karate, our belt system goes like this: white red yellow orange green blue purple brown 1 brown 2 brown 3 black
