  1. I did not get to see this fight. Was it UFC, or a Pride fight? It sounds like it would have been a good one. I work at night, so I hardly ever get to see them anymore. If you have any more info, please let me know.
  2. The martial arts have always interested me, and my dad took me once when I was around 4 or 5. I loved it, but had to stop after a while. Later on, I took it up again at the advice of a friend. I outlasted even him, and have been doing it now for the last 13 years. I hope to go another 13 and beyond.
  3. You will need to use your feet for movement and leverage in grappling, so I would think that you may feel something there. This just in my experiences, however. You may just want to give your foot some time to heal before embarking on any endeavors.
  4. Westerners could do this stuff, I just think we don't worry about being able to do things like this. We concentrate on more practical means of training.
  5. Working a night shift doesn't interfere with my MA schedule too much, it is the mid shifts that do; like 3-11, or 12-8. Those are the ones that kill MA class time.
  6. All good points here. The worst they can do is tell you no. I wish I would have been bolder when I was younger, but I was always afraid of rejection. But, it happens to us all at some point, so we should not run from it. Best of luck, and just let it come to you.
  7. This is how I do it towards my instructor as well.
  8. Try Tabata intervals. Do 20 seconds of burpees, then rest 10 seconds. Do this 8 times total (4 minutes total). Simple but highly effective workout. With respect, Sohan Thanks, I may try that. I may need to get my wife to time the intervals for me!
  9. Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris was a good one. Also, I meant to have Lee vs. Ohara on my list, how I forgot that one, I'll never know!!
  10. Prior to the last few Tekkens, however, his style was claimed Mishima style. Just recently he has claimed Kyokushin.
  11. our school is a outreach of the church we are apart of. we have three classes. adult, beginning class (ages 4 thru and a advanced class (ages 9 - 16) they are small classes which i like as it is easier for me to give each more attention. i have revamped the curriculum and include the following.... orange belt - basic technique green belt - advanced technique red belt - basic grappling/free style wrestling/jui-jitsu blue belt - close order combat/sparring/grappling purple belt - pressure points and choke holds brown belt - more grappling and advanced jui-jitsu combined with karate black belt - street fighting/with more grappling/jui-jitsu/karate/and detailed study of body language and situational ethics placing the student in street situations. I include kumite, kata, and self-defense. I encourage my students that running or walking away from a fight is not being a coward but a wise choice. We promote according to ability. we charge very little and have street kids coming in now. If anyone has any suggestions on curriculum i am all ears! Nice approach. I like it.
  12. Very cool, Sohan. You are like the energizer bunny!!
  13. It is excellent. I have done it once so far, for 30 second intervals, and it wears me out! Thanks so much for the tip!
  14. Chin up, Kez, it won't be long!!
  15. Thank you very much, savedbygrace. It is nice to know that the KarateForums stands out among the rest.
  16. Yeah, that would be great! Not feasible, however!
  17. It just depends on the instructor as to what you should do. I think you did the right thing, and if he didn't make an issue of it, I would say you are ok.
  18. That is interesting info.
  19. OOoooo, sorry to hear that, Kez. I have seen things like this happen, and have had some near misses myself. The best way to avoid this problem is to have nice tight fists when sparring. When sparring with open hands, you increase the chance of the fingers getting jammed or broken. Hope you heal up soon! You and I are in the same boat, now!
  20. By saying that the clinch is done at the crown of the head, you mean that it does not go around the neck, correct?
  21. I have seen some things like that on TV before, and have always wondered about it. It must take years to get to that level.
  22. Well, I went to teach the kids class that I normally teach on Monday afternoons, and it was tough. I tried just a few things, real slow like, and my muscle still pulled. It feels like it is going to take forever to heal, at this rate. I am hoping by next week I can get back to doing something. I definitely can't kick with my left leg, yet.
  23. The level of contact depends more on the tournament rules rather than how much padding is worn. Many point tournaments are light to medium contact, and they still wear padding. At these events, you will likely see fewer injuries, if the refs are doing their jobs. I try to spar with the same emotion, whether I am padded or not. If I don't have pads on in class, I will try to control myself so as not to injure someone. However, if it is tournament, and there is no limit on the contact, then I would go after them. At our tournaments, we spar with pads and chest protectors, but we have to have body displacement to score points, so we have to make some good level of contact. We can also win by knockout, so the level of contact gets up there.
