Chok Dee--The Kickboxer (Movie)
bushido_man96 replied to Sohan's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Sounds cool! I will have to look into it. -
I would say having a cold one at nigth is not a bad thing. Like anything else, moderation is the key. Definetly don't drink before a class, however.
-
Kake Geri means literally "hooking kick". If you're looking for a stomp, it's called fumikomi You see, all this confusion can be avoided by calling the "hook kick" the hook kick, the "axe kick" the axe kick, and the "stomp kick" the stomp kick.

How so? If a stance is one leg forward, then any time you have one leg forward, you're in a stance.... I don't understand your statement When you fight, you probably assume a "fighting stance" if you know that conflict is emminent. However, you normally would not assume a cat stance, a horse stance, or a front stance to fight from. You may move into a similar stance to these while performing certain moves, but you will then go back to your natural stance when the transition is completed.

I try to look, but can't find what you guys are talking about. Could you give a more specific place to find the info?

What rank is your blue belt? Intermediate, perhas? You should be doing some sparring by now. We start our students into sparring after their 2nd testing.

Maybe you should go take a look at the school that he attends. Watch a class, and then see if your conclusions are justified. If that is the case, then you may want to try to talk him into leaving, if you really feel that this is for the best. It is good that you pointed out some technical problems that he is having, and I think the fact that you guys got together and bounced ideas off of each other is fantastic. This shows great spirit and commaraderie for the martial arts. If you want to ease him into it, schedule a few more of these little meetings and keep working together. He may see for himself eventually that coming your way is the thing to do.

That is a stinky situation. I don't want to sound paranoid, but you may want to keep a look out for this guy. You can never be too careful. Who knows what kind of stuff this place is filling his head with. -
The True Martial Artist
bushido_man96 replied to PlasmaShock's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The beauty of restrainting someone is that by applying a good technique and putting them into the ground (notice I said "into", not "on" ) is that you can inflict just as much pain with a non compliant attacker as you could with strikes, sometimes more. Not that I enjoy hurting people, however, I sympathize with law enforcement personnel and their ability to counter a combative suspect and what the law will allow them to do. So true. There always was and always will be little tricks you can use to help the situation. Things like a quick knee into the thigh or grinding knuckles into ribs on the way through when executing a lock always help and for the most part, remain hidden. It's amazing how when you look through incident reports at places I've worked just how many people "tripped over" or "fell into the wall". Good stuff! I am going to keep all that stuff in mind. -

Self-defense/One-step sparring drills
bushido_man96 replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
I agree completely. My experience as well. With respect, Sohan This has been my experience as well. It is a good building block for novice students to use to figure out how far away they can be from someone and still get good contact with a kick or punch. It also allows for full speed attacks to be dealt with in a controlled manner. You have to learn to walk before you can run, and to crawl before you walk. One-steps have helped me with that. -
Self-defense/One-step sparring drills
bushido_man96 replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
Speed, yes OK. Timing, maybe - but only in terms of working on getting yourself moving as soon as you see the attacker move, but at that point you don't know what the actual attack is going to be. Distance, I'm really not convinced at all. The attacker's distance is generally totally wrong. Usually the defender's distance for their initial counter-attack is wrong too. And as the attacker now stands there sterile and lifeless any further counter-strikes the defender throws at them will likely be incorrectly distanced too. But my real bug-bear is that all those things (speed, timing & distance) can be equally well trained by other drills that don't teach the bad habits that one-step inevitably teaches. Mike Ok, you've made the point that you don't like one-steps. But, do you have some drills to offer that could be used for self-defense drills, since you like the effectiveness of them? -
You are lucky that you don't gain much weight, eating whatever you want. Don't count on that ability to stick around forever!! I am opposite of you. I lift 4 days a week. I can bench 305 max, but can't do push-ups well, and have to do assisted pull-ups. I guess it just depends on the person.
-
You are welcome. I guess I have good timing.

Huh, I don't notice any padding on that gear. Why wear it? Just go old school, with no pads!

Kung Fu In Combat
bushido_man96 replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Most of the Chinese wars, much like other cultures, were fought with primarily weapons, and the hand-to-hand combat was the last ditch effort when the weapon was lost. This was the same with the Japanese, and with the Europeans. Each would have offered about the same amount of techniques and counters, etc, to disarming and/or taking a weapon or armed opponent down and incapacitating them. As far as going into an all-out ground fight, grappling/wrestling style, that would not have been as common in wars. Laying prone would get you killed. -

They mention in the movie that they allow hands, feet, takedowns, and strikes on the ground. However, no elbows or knees, and no grappling. -

........um, not so sure about that. I'd have to have it done to me to believe it.
