  1. This is good advise, but it won't go with everyone, however. For example, I am a detention officer, and I am really not allowed to strike anyone unless I absolutely must have to so I don't get seriously injured. Therefore, I must learn other alternatives.
  2. I see respect in two ways; those who demand it, and those who earn it.
  3. Very true, I think. To the outsider, they either want to see XMA or MMA. Not that this is bad, just that there is so much in between as well.
  4. I would usually agree with you here, that she should start training, but in this case it sounds like she would be diving into a fairly hostile environment. I hate to say this, but at this point, is it really worth it? You aren't training there. The people involved treat you poorly. This whole conflict is causing friction between you and your boyfriend at home. I have to say, if you aren't getting anything out of it, do something else with your time. It doesnt sound worth the stress you are going through, and I doubt anything will change, even if they are FORCED to apologize. They don't mean it and they don't care. You make a very good point, here, Jaymac. It comes to the point that you should maybe cut your losses. One thing that would concern me is if your boyfriend is going to continue to be un-supportive in this way, with any other things that you may go through. It is a good question to ask yourself.
  5. I think Patrick puts you up at his multi-million dollar YouGetJack-ominium
  6. Boxing would be a good idea. When you learn the rules, you can always break them. Seriously, though, I think you are going to be fighting more than one person more often then not, and their really is not much good advise as far as this goes. Several things can happen. 1, you get whipped, bad. 2, you take out the knee of one, get additional assault and batter charges, and extend your visit. 3, you get into a one on one, and don't get stabbed, and you get solitary or something. 4, you get into a fight, make it out ok, but next time, they stab you with a shank. Not good for you. I really hope you don't go to jail.
  7. Congratulations! I got a car you can use....do you remember the Flintstones???
  8. Another great article, Laurie. When I first started to help out teaching, I can remember being so nervous. I can't imagine what it would have been like, being thrown to the wolves like that. I love teaching now, but who knows if it had been like that! I am glad to hear the you enjoyed assisting.
  9. Great article, Laurie. I really like the quote I listed below: I have had some experiences similar to this, only concerning different aspects of the art. In the end, it really helps us find what we are looking for.
  10. Cute article.
  11. Yeah, the Ravens are really kicking butt, now that Billick has taken over the play calling. Watch out for them in the playoffs!
  12. I have to work all night! So, I spend some time here as well. If you get time, do something that just totally wears you out during the day, like some running or something, that way, you are more tired, and you have to sleep. I like to read when I can't sleep as well. Sometimes, my mind races, or I think about something that happened during the day, and I can't sleep. I have noticed, though, that now that I sleep duing the day, I usually don't have any problems going to sleep. Funny, huh?
  13. Your welcome....let's both crack one open at midnight Saturday, and cheers to you!!!! Oh, wait, dang it, I have to work! Ok, maybe on Sunday night??
  14. Wow, very interesting. I wonder what all it will include. Maybe stages where you can re-enact Enter the Dragon scenes...that would be so cool!
  15. Keep at it, and maybe! I'll tell you a secret....I can't do the full splits. So if you get there, you will be one better than me!
  16. When seeing other schools at our testings at HQ, we notice that it seems that the other instructors don't focus on technique as much. I haven't been to a lot of other schools in our system, but I have been in other systems, and I would like to go back and work with them some, to see how things have come along.
  17. Pick something to work on each time you spar. Let's say you want to improve on your spin side kick counter. So, you focus on throwing that counter kick each time your partner throws a back leg round kick. Simple things like this can help you achieve some goals. Also, work on strategy. Strategy makes it fun.
  18. You make a good point. The fighters could just make it easy on me, and knock one or the other out!
  19. I agree, comepetition is a great way to go for getting experience.
  20. Man, I hate you.....you posted an exercise that really helps but hurts SO BAD.......(just kidding on the "hate" part )......seriously, I've been doing that exercise for about 2 weeks and I can REALLY tell a difference....Thank you for posting it...... Hey, no problem. You are welcome! I need to start doing it while I am at home again as well. It is great for burning those leg muscles.

In 13 years of MA practice, I have never sat in this position.
  22. Sorry to hear that you fell out with your Ryu Te school, MizuRyu. Hey, live and learn, right? I think it is cool that you found a judo school...I envy you greatly! I imagine that you will be getting into a lot of randori later on, if not already. I don't think they do much grappling from the bottom, but I could be wrong. Elbows_and_knees has judo experience, so maybe he could help you out some. I have a book on Kodokan Judo, by Jigor Kano, and I love it. Me and my brother used to play around with some of the throws, and had a good time. I think it is a great book, and it explains things very well. Good pictures, too. Good luck in your training!
