  1. I try to do this...but my flow is limited. Some people "flow" from a fire hose. Mine is a trickle from a leaky faucet...A leaky faucet is fine as long as you keep leaking. Ever leave a leaky faucet for a month? See how much your water bill is after that.I would posit that having a few techniques and a really good understanding of position is more important than having a lot of tricks up your sleeve. Most beginners spar too much, don't drill enough and always want to learn a new technique. Most advanced players drill a lot, spar regularly but not a lot, and usually wind up using the stuff they learned as a white belt more than anything else. Those are wise words, Tempest!
  2. Well put, Bob. One could say that techniques are the delivery system for concepts.
  3. Yours will be the first one, Brian!! Yes! 😁
  4. That's how you know you've done your job as an instructor.
  5. That's good news! Don't have to worry about that re-test.

  7. Well, I'm not sure about "ultimate."Remember, in The Quest, I think the Sumo only made it to the semifinals....
  8. I've heard this is a great book, but I've yet to pick it up. Maybe its time....
  9. This is tough one. There is some great advise in this thread so far, but sometimes, you just want to do the things you love! You could do both during the week; week A, you do Karate as the emphasis, maybe a 3-2 or 2-1 class ratio. The next week, week B, you swap it. It could slow down your chances for testing, but if learning each is more important for you, then its no big deal. Let us know what you decide to do. What a conundrum to have!
  10. I think that JKD has developed so much on its own now that cross-training the two would probably be fairly productive. In WC, you'll get the good foundation of what the focus on (if you wonder what that is, check out some of stonecrusher69's videos in the Chinese Martial Arts forum). When you get into JKD, there are some different branches out there, and their focus might be a little different. Whatever you get there, I'm sure can benefit from some WC training.
  11. Its a pretty obscure style anymore, and finding it outside of India might prove quite a challenge. One is probably better off starting out in a local school and learning the basics of Martial Arts, and then branch out from there. The journey must start somewhere!
  12. you wait till they're teenagers.. it'll more along the lines of: Dad: "How was practice, buddy? Daughter: *shrug* [mumble something incomprehensible] Daughter: *exit slamming door* Oh yes, those days are coming...back. Ah, the attitude of the teenager...
  13. Great article, Heidi! Your words ring true.
  14. Great article, Noah. Understanding concepts really reveals the techniques, I think. Thanks for sharing this.
  15. Excellent article. Thanks for sharing these ideas. These are great points to consider in both leading and following.
  16. Great article, John! I feel that with the advent of the amount of resources available online, it is really foolish to not use them from time to time. Great article on how to approach this. Which online course did you use?
  17. I do hope I get dibs on some autographed copies, Bob!
  18. Great questions posed in the article, Bob. I don't know that we are limiting ourselves with the blocks we use in sparring as compared to fighting. In Krav, we refer to only two ways of blocking, inside defense and outside defense. Outside defense covers anything coming from the outside, like arcing style attacks (haymakers or round kicks). Inside refers to straight line attacks that get deflected or parried (jabs and other straight punches). Does this over-simplify things? I don't think so. If the attack is high and coming down, you basically do a high block. If its lower and coming up, you'd do more of a low block. I think a lot of things have an affect on our styles of blocking in arts like Shindokan, TKD, or Shotokan. At one time, fighters trained to defend against weapons, which one can strike with from a variety of angles with chances of success. A blade makes a downward angled attack to the shoulder/neck area very potent. An angled high block could be useful in stopping that attack. Take the blade away, and there are better targets and attack pathways for an unarmed attacker to take. Therefore, in a fight without this kind of weapon, a different block becomes useful. Thank you for posing the questions in this article, Bob. Its got me thinking!
  19. Welcome to KF, Tyler!
  20. Romo might've lost his job, when that time comes, but, imho, that time hasn't arrived...yet. Dak Prescott is doing a great job, and if he continues to do so, Romo might face his contract being renegotiated with him either taking the back-up job or just retiring; I believe that he'll retire before becoming a back-up QB. I believe Romo should not return until next year in order to give his back much more rest and strengthening. GO COWBOYS!! The Cowboys QB situation here reminds me an awful lot of how Tom Brady became the starter, and future HOFer, in New England. It also reminds me of a time when Chiefs starter Elvis Grbac got injured, and Marty Schottenheimer subbed in a very successful Rich Gannon. KC made the playoffs behind Gannon, but when Grbac got healthy, Marty said the job was his. KC lost the playoff game, and Gannon eventually signed with the Raiders. And went to a Super Bowl. I hope the Cowboys don't make the mistake KC did. That said, KC beat the Saints today, and keep pace with the Raiders in the West.
  21. This was a great read, Alex! Thank you for sharing your learning process with us. This is great info!
  22. A very well written article, Danielle. I think there are times when we worry too much about why we do forms, and forget the benefits of just doing them
  23. Thank you for the responses! This has been a topic that really came about as my boys started wrestling. I continue to learn and grow with them in this capacity, and learn something new every day!
  24. Welcome to KF, highkick! Good to have another kicker on board.
