  1. I also study Wing Chun and wing chun traditionaly and I saw traditionaly don't use any belt ranking system, but there is of course a way to know where you are at and wherea nother student is at.There is either you a jonior and senior students. If you are only there for say 6 mounts and only learned the first hand form you a begginer. If your on the 3rd form then your an andvance stundent because only someone who has matered the basics and has reached a fairly high level should be training this form.
  2. to have strong forarms is certainly an advantage to someone who does not trian their forarms. To have strong forarms you have the ability to block a punch, kick and cause pain to the aponent .When you have stong forarms when someone punches at you their punch will bounch off your bridge arm.
  3. Yes, I agree some raised the point that we used to have M.A. like short sword, quaterstaff, dualing with words and pistols but all these tradidions either died out or modified to become a sport like boxing.I have also an old book on boxing that used bare fists no gloves and they used to kick to the shin and knee as well but not anymore as you know.My point is countries like China,Japan ect. have a long line of development that is unbroken in the M.A. that is part of there culture that has value and has been preserved through the generations. We as Americans can not say that.
  4. Shoalin today is different then it was before it was burnt down. The monks today are only actors set up by the govt. to attract tourism!! it is using wu shu and trying to sell it as real kung fu.I heard we they spar they mostly spar like kick boxers,so where where is real shoalin kung fu then?
  5. Thanks for the feed back. I think everyone has a valid point.A lot of you said that why we don't have a M.A. in our country is due to cultural thing.AS far as development of a martial style I agree that culture will play a part ,but any culture or society needs a form of self defence to survive. In our society we have the gun but how many people walk around with a gun all the time.In England you can not even own a gun so what do you do? you learn Karate or something else. All my point was that even in todays society there is still a need for everyone to defend your self so why has society not insitutionalized a system of M.A. that reflects the needs of our culture. One that is not imported but one that is our own.
  6. I think wushu is the best. They are far more exciting to watch and better trained.
  7. Do you practice Lau Gar kung fu?
  8. You can try http://www.kungfumagazine.com
  9. Just woundering what people thought about why America and most of the western world with a few exception why we have no real martial art in our culture like the Chinese,Japanese ect. We have lots of sports and sports arts like Boxing, but that is no real martial art.Every martial art that we have has been an import. If there is a demand and a need in our culture for a martial art then why have'nt invented one?Yes a long time ago there where M.A. before the invention of the gun but know everything has been sportized or made fake like the WWWF on T.V. Like to get some feed-back on this ..
  10. dark_king as for the animals styles as scorpion and centipide, lizard, unicorn as far as I know there is no system of there animals but can be found in system that may contain one of these animals. Like in Ba-gwa there is a unicorn I believe in one of there palms forms but as a style I don't think they exists.Kung fu movies are not real and some times make up styles.AS for the other animals like Praying matis is a real style and very popular like seven star praying matis,Tai mantis, then you have the southern mantis like Jook lum or chow ga, ect. Dragon, there is a southern dragon style called lung ying . Snake is used alot in many systems like Hung gar,Choy le Fut, ect as part of there 5 animal form( tiger, dragon, snake, crane, lepard)My style wing chun uses a lot of snake stikes and many crane as well. Hope this helps!!
  11. ChangWuJi do you study Wing chun from Wang Kui lineage? if you do can you tell me more about this style?
  12. Bob, my first lesson in W.C. you will learn the basic horse stance and how to open it . and maybe the first section of the first form called sil lim tao.The form is broken down into 3 sections for easy learning. You will spend a good while on this form before going any further.I spent about 6 months learning this form. This is the most important forn in the system as everything is bilted on this form.
  13. Harvesterofsorrow I think You'll like A.F. his is one or the better sifu around. Later when you get some experience then it will be easier to compare to other instructors.
  14. HIYA: In wing chun the weapons are not emphasizeed as much as the open hand in the begining because the weapons are not taught until you have almost completed the system so a lot of wing chun people don't even reach this level. When you reach this level then yes it is emphasized because it will take all you r still to master the two weapons the staff and the short knike( bat chum do) Some other wing chun styles may have other weapons in there system but all have the basic two. As for the way you pronounced ,you can say it as wing chun but there are other ways like wing tsun, ving tsun, it just depends on the school.
  15. I practice fut sao wing chun .Which has internal and external training.
  16. One of the problems with the internal styles like Tai chi is that most people don't practice it as an martial art and many people don't know it is.They have become health arts .Bagua and hsing-I are for the most part still taught as an martial art but it is hard to find someone who has masterd the system.Internal styles do take a much longer time to be able to use in combat because it take a long time to develope internal componets like internal forse which takes a lot time to develope people don't have the patients for.
  17. fenwick1999, I can't say if your statement is true or false.Sifu L.T. is from H.K. thought.I agree thought that L.T. and William Cheung have had a lot or magazine exposure, and not always the best fighters. I know some sifus how are very good but not very well known.
  18. HI I'm new to this forum and I like the diversity here of MA. I "ve trained in Wing Chun kung fu a Chinese southern style for many years.Looking to meat other MA or Wing Chun MA..
  19. Bob, if you buy a dummy buy a wodden one this is the traditional one made of teek wood, and they will last forever. You can put it outside and it will rot from the rain.
  20. I want to make a comment about the post The Germany Incident. I believe a few facts are incorrect. When Leung Ting had a seminar in NYC I was there at the time so I know what when down. Frist, it was stated that students of Grandmaster Cheung had gotten past Leung Ting's guard and slap his face a couple a times.Well that never happen!! at all.one student of GM Cheung did chi sao with sifu Leung Ting student and Cheung student tried very hard to hit him.I don't remember if he did but both of them started grappling and fell down a couple of stairs. It was stated that sifu Leung Ting had a body guard but he had only his students there. Also,It was stated that GM Cheung students finally calmed the situation down, but that is not true it was Sifu Leung Ting that had calmed things down by removing the two stundents of GM Cheung. I also just want to say that in your post you don't show any respect to sifu Leung Ting. You call Cheung Grandmaster but never sifu or master to Leung Ting. I also want to say I'm not a student of sifu Leung Ting just a person who was ther at the time and knows a lie when he hears one.
  21. Hi , this is my first post here on this forum.I've studied wing chun for many years so if anyone has a question maybe I can add something..
