  1. They offered feedback when they noticed something that needed fixing. Gotta have respect for those guys. I was dead at the end of five sessions. They were up there for the whole class. The jumprope thing is interesting, I've already invested in a jump rope because I was already told it would help my speed. I'm just having problems interpreting what I've found on websites for different jump rope techniques. I learn better when I can watch someone doing it.
  2. Guess this was posted more than 14 hrs ago. How did the test go?
  3. Our dojo is currently doing a membership drive. For each person that a student brings in for a free lesson, they get a ticket. At the end of the drive, there's a raffel for a prize. You might want to see if you could give a little talk at your school board or pta meetings. Good luck.
  4. I'm lucky in the fact that my tuition allows me to go to any class but kendo(which is taught by a different sensei) I go to four classes a week. I'd recommend going at least twice a week, but I understand how the money situation goes. I was off MA for about a year after I graduated from college because I couldn't afford it. You might want to check with your sensei, a lot of them will allow you to work for your tuition if you can't afford class.
  5. Our sensei is out at the AAU Nationals for the rest of the month so the sempais are running the class. Two day's ago, they had us basically line up and go down the line of sempais doing two to four minute sparring. After running down the line I was completely exhausted and was so sore the next day that I couldn't make it to class. Analyzing how I did, I realized that I moved around far to much and didn't keep enough control. This was in part because I was up against black belts and while they didn't just mop the floor with us, they worked us pretty hard. It was kind of intimidating to go up there, but I actually came away with a lot of knowledge. The other problem I have is poor conditioning. What type of exercising is good for doing continuous sparring like that? Should I focus more on cardio like running or put more effort into muscle building like lifting?
  6. I believe I read that it was a cg test by an animation house trying to land the job for the move. You can buy the generation one episodes on dvd. Also, if you go to the website, you'll notice that the timer is set to count down on the fourth of this year. I've heard that there will then be a teaser that they'll post on the site.
  7. Someone who studies a different style has to respect the dojo they are visiting. If the instructor wants to have some kind of demonstration, that's one thing, but it's not you're dojo, so you don't make the rules. It seems to me like they got what was coming to them.
  8. that's cool. Snake Eyes was my favorite Joe
  9. I have three uniforms. Two of them are for use in the dojo and have no patches whatsoever. The third is my tournament gi and it has only one patch. To compete in AAU(Amature Athletic Union) sanctioned events a uniform must be completely unadorned aside from the single AAU patch that is sewn on the chest.
  10. The guys at Dreamworks are my Heroes!
  11. I used to not be, but I drink a lot now. I drink herb teas, white tea(my favorite) and green tea. They have a really cool chinese garden in Portland(Oregon) that had a tea house where you could get a lot of different types of tea while you overlook the garden. I really enjoyed it.
  12. A lot of christians like to declare things they don't understand as evil. Ki/chi is far to ambiguous a word for most people to deal with. Energy, there's energy created when you breathe, there's kenitic energy, there's all kinds of different definitions of energy. My thought is this. All things are by thier basic nature neutral, it's how the person uses it that makes it good or bad.
  13. That's crazy, I had a friend get clipped by a drunk driver. She spun out of control and wound up in somebody's laundry room. Glad nobody was hurt.
  14. Trying not to sound stupid, but what do you mean by sprawling? Like sprawl out on the ground?
  15. When you walk on fences, rails or walls rather than on the street When you breakfall into your bed at night When you kick at branches that are at head level whenever you see them When you analyze a fighting game looking for a new combination to try when you're sparring.
  16. I'm kinda strange. I really love the smell of coffee beans, but I can't stand the taste of it. I usually drink a couple of Mt. Dews when I'm in need of chemically induced enthusiasm.
  17. Does not having a piece of paper make you any less of a martial artist? I'd say no. Does it mean more people will respect that rank. Unfortunately the answer is yes. We live in a world where anyone with any talent can call themself an expert and start teaching. A certificate may not guarantee a good instructor, but it's usually guarantees a certain level of competence(provided it's not forged) for prospective students.
  18. I don't think you could be able to actually start a fire. I do remember seeing a show about these tibetan monks I believe that went and stayed out in the mountains with nothing but the robes they normally wear. A group of scientists actually hooked up some life support equipment to monitor them and they survived extreme temperatures all night. They said they were able to stay warm by focusing their ki.
  19. You could learn technical stuff from a machine, like how to punch and kick, but a sensei is a mentor, friend and guide to the student, all of which a machine could never be.
  20. Sometimes, they'll leave their sirens off because it causes people to either freeze up, freak out, or otherwise get in the way of where they're going. If they're moving really fast through heavy traffic though(which they shouldn't be doing anyway) they should have their siren on. I'd say you should contact the emergency department that hit you if nothing else than to report a dangerous driver.
  21. Pick the one with the best instructor. A good instructor in a system you're not too interested in is far better than a bad instructor in an art you really like.
  22. Here's the problem. Kata is taught differently at almost any school. I'm sure some use it more as exercise while others remain true to it's original study. I don't really think that a blanket statement could be made about any martial art in any aspect.
  23. I've got a Fender Strat and a couple of student acoustic guitars.
  24. If you want to take up running, do it in intervals. Here's a really good way to train: 3 min of walking and 2 of running(6 times) 2 and 3 3 and 3(5 times) 4 and 1 5 and 2(4 times) 6 and 3(3 times) 8 and 2 10 and 2 12 and 3(twice) 14 and 1 30 min(once) Just keep going up in the intervals and soon you'll be running for 30 min straight. You'll want to be lightly jogging, meaning you can talk with somone while you're doing it, but not able to sing. Generally, you do each different interval for a week and go to the next one, but you can keep at it until you're comfortable. Or, you can skip an interval if you're finding it too easy. Make sure you're stretching and taking a 5-10 min brisk walk to warm up and cool down. If you find you're hurting too much running, you may want to consider training on an eliptical machine at a gym. If you find you're getting shin splints, try standing up straight and tapping each foot 50 times or so before a practice. I don't know exactly what this stretches, but it helps prevent them. I also recommend you get a good pair of running shoes.
