I was checking some Google rankings for a site I’m working on and got an idea based off of the side ads. Somebody had put a gift certificate to a martial arts center on eBay. What would you think about putting a gift certificate good for a month of lessons to your dojo up on eBay? It might be a good way to do some recruitment for your dojo and get some extra funds. Do you think this sounds too McDojo-ish? Has anyone tried this kind of thing before? I don’t know if there are any restrictions on eBay for this type of thing or not. Maybe you could make the gift certificate also good to cover part of the cost of gear if they stay. It would require some research. Just a thought I wanted to throw out there.

Anyone Remember this Show?
lordtariel replied to lordtariel's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Finally found it after a couple days of digging: it was actually called warrior challenge. It appears it only aired for four episodes. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/warriorchallenge/about/search.html -
I'm more into webcomics... Megatokyo and Applegeeks are some of my favorites.

Why is the spear called the king of weapons?
lordtariel replied to parkerlineage's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I believe it's called that in chinese martial arts -
I've done some 2 on 1 with shinai(2 people) vs bo(1). It's a completely different than what I was used to. Just out of curiousity SCA guys... how do you spar with battle axes? Do you make wood ones or do you just have serious armor? I'd think something like that would have a great deal of mass behind it.

I'm a sucker for henrey winehards rootbeer. Of course, I love tempura as well.

I believe one of the higher ranking requirments in our dojo is to come up with your own kata complete with bunkai. I don't believe these are actually added to the school list of katas though.

It was on PBS and it took a bunch of modern day people and put them through martial training of different time periods? Then they rounded it out by putting them in a battle scenario to see how they would do. They did one on being a gladiator, one on being a roman leigonarre, one on being a viking and a few others. I can't remember the name of the series.

Grant money for college MA clubs?
lordtariel replied to parkerlineage's topic in Instructors and School Owners
But it does. By supporting the club you are helping the college add more to its cirriculum. By adding more to what it offers, you increase the allure of the college(it really does, I chose my college partially on available schools in the area), which brings more people into the community. By giving bored college students something to do, you keep them from following typical college extracirricular activites such as drinking and partying. Also, does the college have equipment you can use such as bags, mats, ect? It may well be that you'll have to require people to supply their own sparring equipment and gi(if you feel they even need one) at first. If you can pick up some momentum and intrest, you can prove that it was just a bad instructor and may change the mind of the school. Fundraisers are another way of getting both some recruitment and money for your club. The Aikido club at our college used to do a "sushi drive" to help fund their club. -
The hardest requirement...

Don't get me wrong... I don't actually mind the cleaning. Tuition would probably go up if he had to hire cleaners to come in. I feel that it's a show of respect to the place where you train to help clean and really, things like sweeping the floors and cleaning mirrors really aren't that difficult. -
Someone in our dojo just started chucks and sensei was showing him applications and such. I was suprised at how effective they are for entangling someone either by the arm, neck, or leg. While not necessarily the best weapon, I now believe it's an effective weapon for someone who knows how to use them.

Grant money for college MA clubs?
lordtariel replied to parkerlineage's topic in Instructors and School Owners
You're probably going to have to do some legwork. Just start going from buisness to buisness. You'd be suprised, many buisnesses will give donations. Make sure you have a solid presentation on how it will help the community, either by getting kids off the street, teaching them responsibility and discipline, stuff like that. Think about something to give them for their donation like a plaque in your dojo and something for them. Not saying you should go commercial and start hanging company banners and stuff in your dojo though, something tasteful like a small plaque saying "our thanks go out to such and such company for donating the equipment". -

Few worries about TKD school
lordtariel replied to Orient's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If you are in a contract you may not want to run right away. Start taking notes on how often the class starts late, how often the kids train, things like that. Get colaberation from other parents as well. If you go and tell him you're going to try and break before doing that, you may find that all of the sudden he's got "perfect dojo" and they'll make it look like you just want to weasel out of your contract. -

Wasn't there an anime based off of Tekken. I know the SF2 and SF2 Alpha anime rocked. -
Private Lesson Students' Pace
lordtariel replied to scottnshelly's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Our sensei took someone completely new and worked with him every day for six months on three techniques: Block/Reverse Thrust Front Kick Thrust He then entered him in a local tournament at the black belt level. The guy took first place. -

If I want to kick a tall guy in the head, I'll kick him in the gut first. Then when he's doubled over I'll kick him in the head. Acrobatic moves are only good when used in suprise or when the opponent is stunned and even then, there are better things to do. It does take some serious talent to do that stuff though.
-
That's what helped me to learn to do them. I wouldn't use it in a fight though, it seems to me to waste too much energy, and odds are he's going to kick you when you're doing it. Only possibly for intimidation factor.

So which part of the world is everybody from?
lordtariel replied to gateqway's topic in General Chat
Me... I'm from southern oregon USA. -
Here's would I would do first: NOT GO TO BARS! Amen to that. First of all, if the guy was drunk and harrasing, I'd talk to the management of the restraunt to have him escorted out if we couldn't get him to go away on our own. If they weren't taken away by the police, I would seriously be paying attention to my surroundings on the way out.(I've trained myself to make a habit out of being aware of my surroundings at night anyway.) Hopefully noticing them before they were in a threatening range. If I noticed him following me out of the restaraunt, I would try to walk into a building and see if he follows. If it looked like conflict was going to occur, there's a few options I would choose from depending on the specific situation. 1)I'd send my girlfriend ahead to lock herself in the car and call the police or to run back into the restraunt screaming bloody murder all the way. 2)Knowing my girlfriend, she'd probably give him a good dousing of the pepper spray she keeps in her purse. 3)I would be looking for anything I could use as a possible improvised weapon, keep them at a distance and try to talk my way out first. 4)If they were attacking, I would immediatly go for as damaging moves as possible(Throat strike, eye gouge, hard kick to the side of the knee, bar until arm or elbow untill they break or dislocate the shoulder) 6) The car itself is a pretty effective weapon. If we could get in, or just have her get in. we'd probably just hit him with it if he got in the way

Mortal Kombat
lordtariel replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
MK1 was a decent movie for it's time... Especially considering it's a port from a video game. Very few movies based on games are good or do the series justice.
