  2. Hey, welcome to the forums! Good to see a fellow Oregonian.
  3. That might be why I've never quite been able to stick one. I'd try it at my house but it's so old that I'm afraid I'd put my feet through the floor.
  4. It's an interesting concept. I've heard of the "belly brain" before, but never done any research on the idea.
  5. A disaster occurred earlier today when a a small two-seater plane crashed into a local cemetery. Search and rescue workers have recovered 826 bodies so far, and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the night.

  7. Another tactic is to make the whole class to push ups or drills. That way, you have the entire dojo working with her rather than just you. This technique could backfire though if you do it all the time because your other students will start trying to avoid classes that she's in, but it is useful on occasion. You're saying she's making slow progress though, and as long as there's progress there's hope. You just have to keep with it. If she were a kid I'd say she's trying to wait you out and see if you get tired of always correcting her.

    help

You probably wouldn't be thrown at all if you went to a judo class, you spend the first couple of months learning how to fall. I'm okay with the contract I signed. I can't get out of it because I'm tired of it, but I can get out of it if I have a reasonable issue like loosing my job or moving out of the area, and if I have to miss a month or two and I notify him, he'll let me tack those two months to the end of my contract period. You might want to ask about a few scenarios like this before you sign a contract. An introductory student in our dojo spends most of his class going over basic blocks and strikes taught to him by one of the sempais. I would probably work on flexibility and a little general strength training, but I can't think of anything that would be necessary.
  9. Check out this weird optical illusion. Stare at the dot in the picture for 30 seconds, then without moving your eyes, move the mouse onto the picture. (Make sure the mouse isn't over the picture to begin with) http://www.johnsadowski.com/big_spanish_castle.php Thought it was pretty cool.
  10. I'll have to think about this one. If someone's your height and has their arm around your neck, they're going to be too close to actually stab directly at your back. More likely, the weapon would be able to stab the side and corner of your back. The only way they would be able to hold it to your back if they were standing perpendicular to you. I'll have to think on it a bit.
  11. It takes far, far longer to break adults of bad habits than it does children. A few months isn't necessarily long enough to effect change. When she's not paying attention, ask her to repeat what you said or demonstrate in front of the class. A little personal embarrassment(within reason and not mean) might be more effective.
  12. Congratulations. Thanks for the info on your art as well.
  13. Welcome to the forums.
  14. I would think that there would be one fee per time you rank. If you rank twice in one go, you should only be charged once. $800 seems on the pricey side to me.
  15. Have you told your doctor that the research you did said the growing pains generally stop around 12? He might have some insight on to how long it can go on. I know I had issues up through 15-16. Also, if you're really worried, try getting a second opinion from another doctor.
  16. I've seen ads for his videos all over the place. The videos tend to be on the pricey side though so I've never bought any of them.
  17. Hey, maybe it was just some fight choreograph thing for a talent contest or something.(I hope) As for that display being effective for recruting, I don't believe it would be for most people. Not to say that demos themselves are bad recruitment tools, just that the flashy ones don't really impress unless they are REALLY good.
  18. You could have a "dojo garage sale" where all the students bring in stuff for a sale with the proceeds going to the people taking the trip. You could even have a donation jar while you were at it.
  19. It's a little late but happy birthday.
  20. That's ok, I felt the same way after my first tournament. The big thing is that you competed, despite your nervousness. Next time you'll be better prepared.
  21. Congrats on the new rank!
  22. If by special treatment you mean expectation of top performance, harder training, and more responsibility in teaching younger students, then yes, I think that blackbelts get special treatment.
  23. There have been a few discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of the different woods out there and I just wanted to share I website that I found: http://www.woodworkerssource.net/Merchant3/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=WS&Category_Code=Alder This has a chart that shows the attributes of many different types of woods from around the world. These include weight, hardness, finishing and more. I hope people find it useful. If nothing else, it's interesting.
  24. What type of gauntlets do you use? Did you make them yourself? One of my friends was talking about using kendo gloves but I wonder how well that would work.
