I don't know if the move has an official name, but I've allways heard it called a "kip up."

Ok, dumb question......what's your opinion
lordtariel replied to savedbygrace's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It's good to practice this way. The guy jumping you on the street isn't going to give you time to stretch out. At the same time though, make sure you don't go to crazy without warmup. Remeber, you don't have to high kick an attacker in the head. Kick him in the gut, then when he's doubled over kick him in the head. -

Interesting... if you get a hickory one could you let us know what you think of it and where you got it? Good luck.

I have a similar problem with my ankles. They pop incessantly sometimes when I'm walking, but they don't hurt. I believe the doctor said that the popping noise is similar to when I crack my knuckles. Sohan might know more about this, he's got quite a bit of knowledge about physiology.

We have a requirements book that we have to get signed off before we are allowed to test, but it's mainly techniques and participation, not specific exercise goals.

martial arts scary in some peoples eyes?
lordtariel replied to little kicker's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that there's a lot of misinformation out there that turns people off to the martial arts. I'm kinda 50/50 on the subject. I think it's more that some people are apprehensive when they start the martial arts, not afraid of them. -
Well, it may be belated, but welcome to the forums!

Heh, it's good to know I'm not the only one who doesn't like pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I was kind of feeling unpatriotic or something.

[TKD] Red belt testing
lordtariel replied to Truestar's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Good luck! Remember, pass or fail, it's just a belt. So train hard and give it your all and don't worry about the outcome. -
My daughter passed her grading this morning.

There's some great advice already posted. We've been trained all our lives that hitting is bad. It takes some time to override that. Experience is the best teacher. The more you spar, the easier it will get. -
I agree with Bushido. Tai chi is an excellent art for rehabilitation. Great for ballance, flexibility, and strength training. Not much in the way of cardio obviously. Finding a sifu that knows and correctly practices the martial applications of tai chi is difficult, but not impossible any more. Most of the "sparring" of tai chi takes the form of push hands, an exercise designed to push your opponent off ballance, but there are applications to almost every move. It's also a great augmentation to another art. Make sure you get the OK from your doctor and let the instructor know about your injuries though. You can do yourself harm in tai chi in very rare cases. Good luck.

kempo jitsu grading

I think giving kids a "Jr." blackbelt is a much better idea than giving them thier shodan rank. It gives the kids a sense of accomplishment and prevents the older students from thinking that the only reason someone had a blackbelt is because they breezed through as a kid.

We have a 100% purebred mutt. Don't know exactly what he is, but he defenitly has lab and huskey in him. Sadly, our other pet, a cat, was hit by a car earlier this week.

I'm sure he was as nervous some time in his training. I won't say pretend he isn't there, since that'd be hard, but just remember, if you have the skills, you should get the rank.

QBASIC was the first programming language I learned. I've learned many over the years, but then I was a Computer Science major in college. Currently I am a web designer/programmer and use a lot of ASP in my work and am learning .NET as we are migrating over to that platform in the near future. Also, FORTRAN is a programming language developed in the 50's for science and engineering applications. It stands for Mathematical Formula Translating System. BASIC stands for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code... gotta love the acronyms 10 print "HELLO KARATEFORUMS!" 20 goto 10
