I do both because you never know what you might be wearing in a self defense situation. I'd like to be prepared for as many eventualities as possible. Welcome to the forums by the way.

Crossing vs Spinning Back Kick
lordtariel replied to pete_hmmm's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Doing a back kick, you basically do a 180, then kick straight back, whereas when you do the spin kick, it gets fired by the torque of your spin. At least, that's how we practice it. -
Well, the last two and a half weeks I've been out of the dojo because of the holidays. The dojo's been closed most of last week and this week anyway, but I didn't do nearly as much training as I should have done. I finally got to go back to class today. Of course, today was all about burning those holiday calories off and reworking those weakening muscles back into shape. Sprints, held stances, continuous sparring, bag work, grappling... I don't think I'll be able to walk straight for a week(ok, ok... a couple of days ). Anyone else have a hardcore welcome back class?

ever doubted ur abilities
lordtariel replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think having doubts yourself is normal. The trick of it is to not listen to them. Will I be able to defend myself on the street? Maybe... but the time may come where I don't have any other choice so I might as well not worry about how well I'm going to do and focus on doing my best. -

Is it just when you're doing the spinning kicks? If not it might be dehydration.

Favorite Fighting Game?
lordtariel replied to NightOwl's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I always liked the Soul Calibur series. Jade Empire did a really good job as well. Nothing tops the original Street Fighter 2 (not any of the Turbo Ultra Super Champion Alpha editions) -

You will think this is very ignorant!

In our school, the strip signifies that the student is ready to test for the next belt. You usually only see them when there's a large gap between testing days and mostly with the younger kids. -

I'm more likely to use the one on my computer, but I do have a small hand held one on my desk.

I absolutely refuse to pay $600+ dollars for any gaming system other than my pc...(and that's simply because I do a lot of design work and my pc needs the resources) You can download older system games for the Wii and it's far lower in price. If I want a high end game system I'll go with a 360, but not for another year at least.

Defending against a female assailant
lordtariel replied to username8517's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
As Brian said, a guy is immediately at a disadvantage when defending against a woman. The fact of the matter is, unless there are witnesses who say otherwise, the police will are far more likely to side with a woman a majority of the time in a non-domestic dispute... especially if she's bruised or cut or you're obviously stronger than her.(I don't have any statistical data on this and might be wrong, but I have witnessed this happening before) Your best bet is to make as big of a scene as possible, yelling, trying to get people to notice what's going on. If it's safe to do so, stay wholly defensive, yelling verbal warnings to leave you alone or go away until you have some witnesses. Try blocking the exact same spot on an incoming strike with good, solid blocks. If you continue to strike the same spot on the block, it will really start to hurt after a while. Another way to deal with it is to just run away... if they're 5'3" and 120 and you're big and trained, outrunning them might be a practical way to go. -
I don't know if that's always the case. I'm in a two year contract at my school. The contract has allowances that allow me to get out for a good reason such as injury, loss of job, or moving. I can either just stop going or not pay for the months I'm out and extend my contract by that amount. What's really important is to READ THOROUGHLY anything that you sign. I can't stress how important this is. It doesn't matter if it's a mortgage or permission slip... make sure you know what you're getting into. If you have any questions, just ask.
