Since I'm getting close to the tournament season again, I was debating about getting a new pair Shureido tonfa since the old clunkers I have now are a bit beat up. I was wondering if anyone here has ever gotten a pair and could tell me if they're really worth the $105 price tag that's attached to them or if there's another set that's comparable in quality but a little cheaper somewhere else.

I used to be pretty weak when it came to sparring. I kept getting tense and thinking too much. Do you do much sparring in your dojo? I've found the best way to get better is to just throw yourself into it as much as you can. Be the first one up when your instructors ask for volunteers. Try and spar with the students and sempais that intimidate you the most or will give you the most challenge. This helped me get over the stress of sparring. Another option is to do sparring drills. Have someone throw an attack, you block and throw a counterattack or combo. Try this against various strikes and kicks. It's a little less stressful than full on sparring and it allows you to play around and see what works. Don't worry, it should come the more you practice.

Some really good advice here. There could be some kinda power struggle thing going on here. Best to keep your nose out of it. -
I like it... Today I have my Kobudo workout. Normally my home routine isn't this involved, but as tournament season is coming up, I'm stepping up my training a bit. I don't know the technical names for these so I hope they make sense: Tonfa Spins(50 Per Side): Horizontal Backhand Horizontal Forehand Outside Vertical Backhand Outside Vertical Forehand Inside Vertical Backhand Inside Vertical Forehand Figure 8s(25) Single and double Blocks(25 Each Side): Rising Inside Outside Down Cross Strikes(25 Each Side): Horizontal Vertical Cross Thrust Kata(4 Times) Hamahiga No Tonfa Done Slow, Fast, Hard, then Normal.

I actually like train travel. Sure it's slower, but it's enjoyable to be able to sit back and watch the scenery go by.

I usually try and train on as many different surfaces as possible. The dojo I train in now has mats, but my favorite surface to train on is hardwood.

What is the worst video game you've ever played? For me it's got to be Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman.

Sounds like you had a great experience. Welcome back.

Give me food, and I will live; give me water, and I will die. What am I?

Worst injury experience
lordtariel replied to Greek Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Never had any bad injuries... A concussion in Judo one time and a bruised heel another were about it. The only other real injury I've suffered is a torn rotator cuff that I got when I was working. -
Defending against a female assailant

But what about this issue... she starts screaming and Joe Bob of the street decides he's going to save the day. Now you have two or more people to deal with, and the confrontation is significantly more dangerous. Not that this sort of thing is likely to happen, but I'm just throwing scenarios out there. -
If you want to go back, make sure you get something in writing before you start. If someone was stringing me along like that though, I'd probably find somewhere else.

Cool, thanks!

What eight letter word contains only one letter?

Some daggers are probably small enough to keep on your person, so they make more sense to learn how to use than some bigger weapons that you can't carry without being seen, like a bo. Yeah, I have a set of them that have a wrist sheath and are pretty small. You have to be careful though, I read an article on throwing weapons for self defense and there were some pretty weird laws about them. I'll try and dig up that article.

Does anyone know if throwing a sai is different than throwing knives? Anyone actually practice throwing them?

I just went and saw Eragon. A lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Hope you get better soon. Take it easy.
