  1. interesting...i do however think that you would be able to use what you learn along the way to defend yourself...i doubt seriously that someone would have to complete the system entirely before they could defend themselves. that's just rediculous to think so.
  2. dude, trust me i found out recently that noone is impossible to move...my sensei showed me some sweeps that work better on big guys than they do on little guys you just gotta be able to use that weight against them...
  3. lol angus that's pretty funny
  4. while what you say is true to a degree there isn't anything wrong with trying to emulate someone skilled... if anything it gives a person something to shoot for... just my thought's on the matter...
  5. oh my god! that video is psycho!! ack i feel like i'm getting shin splints just from watching it...*shudder*
  6. brazillian jiu jitsu is a fine martial art for self defense...i teaches great offense and defense from the ground...neutralizing an inexperienced opponent one on one becomes quite easy for the bjj pratitioner...for multiple opponents i'd rather stay standing if possible though...i give a for thai boxing as well...(though i really think you would do well learning bjj...but i am predisposed to saying that since i love it so much.)
  7. i think that the "grand master" status is kind of hokey actually...anyone skilled enough to lay claim to the title would be wise enough to realize that learning never stops and noone can truly be a "master" of anything they only appear to be a master in the eyes of people less skilled. and phantasmatic....you crazy lol
  8. very interesting...i know we train to take down kickers... i would also like to know if it was bjj or danzan ryu or some other from or jiu jitsu...
  9. pressure points are very effective but they all don't work against everyone...i know of a few people who are "dead from the neck up" as one of my instructors liked to say... the mandibular angle (ppt behind the jawbone below the ear.) and the hypoglossal (under the jaw near the chin.) had no effect whatsoever no matter how hard they were pressed. some people are just immune to different pressure points. weird huh?
  10. i would like to second the motion about the judo gi...that's what i wear, they can take a beating.
  11. judo good...falling bad... lol i study bjj, and we were learning some judo throws to help take down an opponent...i seriously don't like being thrown. lol
  12. *shakes his head* i can't wait untill i learn the teeth on sword break...and the fireball shooting... martial arts are cool...
  13. good thread guys, hey ken i was reading along and wondering when someone was gonna mention bjj
  14. i would like to learn thai boxing... and continue my training in bjj.
  15. we don't use any pads at all how tough is that! lol it's alittle different for us though since we don't use any strikes either. not that that's really a limitation since i study bjj.
  16. balance to a kickboxer is really important...especially in a no holds bard fight when you might have to go up against grapplers. we train to take down kickers and it's all the easier if you can't stand up to begin with
  17. i agree with alot of the guys in here in the sense that boxing is a good thing...but as a practitioner of brazillian jiu jitsu i can also say that boxing has some obvious weaknesses moreso even than the other "stand up" martial arts. for the simple fact you don't have to watch out for feet, shins, knees, elbows, just two little hands... that's just why i say, maybe something to think about...
  18. good posts...i'll be keeping that info in mind thanks
  19. that would be an effective combo...i'm training in brazillian jiu jitsu now and looking for a place to learn thai boxing...to kinda of harness the same sort of effect you're looking into.
  20. thanks for the info guys very interesting.
  21. i have never done kickboxing but i do practice brazillian jiu jitsu and i think the belt systems in martial arts are very helpfull to the students. i think it gives a student alot of pride... sort of physical proof of how they are progressing. i know the first time i got promoted i was grinning for days. even though i was at basically the same skill level as the day before i felt so different.
  22. that's interesting i didn't know kickboxing didn't use belts...are thai boxers ranked by a "belt" type system?
  23. good thread folks in my opinion it's a good thing...i mean if a person wants to get in shape i would rather do cardio kickboxing than use the stair master...
  24. your funny yoda lol your right though... in any case training in grappling would be a big help if you ever wanted to try no holds bard blood talon.
