Karate and Kung Fu
striking_cobra replied to DD's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
hey guys, great posting. it's always interesting to find out what people think of the comparisons between two effective martial arts. i won't say one way or the other what is better because as i'm sure you all know it comes down to the dicipline and time that a student puts into practice that makes them effective, not just what art they study. -
what about way of the short stocky guy with a stick?

Anybody do Aikido?
striking_cobra replied to Kensai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
you don't sound very passive and non-combative lol isn't that some major part of aikido? -
Vascular Chokes
striking_cobra replied to El Guerrero Loco's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
vascular chokes are safe when done correctly but i also agree that you should only practice them with the supervision of your sensi. if you do choke your friend out make sure to release the hold imediatly and then just lay him back and pick his feet up...he should regain consiousness within a few seconds. also on a different note...when done properly the choke stops bloodflow to your brain and allows the blood to leave your skull that's why you pass out so quickly...if you stop the flow of blood to the brain but don't let the blood leave the person will still pass out but it will take longer because the brain still has oxygen to use. -
Any prefered takedowns?
striking_cobra replied to Angus's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
single/double leg take downs...throws, sweeps... the open field tackle lol...anything i can use to get someone onto my turf (the ground). my favorite is the one that works at the time -
Machado and Gracie BJJ...
striking_cobra replied to Angus's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
actually the machados are relatives of the gracies (cousins) i think the reason they don't call their art gracie jiu jitsu is because the name "gracie jiu jitsu" is copywrited and only the imediate family can use it...so i think it's more of a legal issue than a major difference in styles that seperates gracie jiu jitsu and machado jiu jitsu... -
BJJ And Judo
striking_cobra replied to Karateka_latino's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i was under the impression that the throws from judo originated from jiu jitsu...(considering jiu jitsu is an ancient art..)?? -
Stand up or sit down?
striking_cobra replied to Angus's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i prefer learning ground attacks and defense more than standing...the only standing attacks i even work on are take downs lol. the reason being, most people can stand up and fight, but if a skilled (or even semi-skilled) grappler takes you down and you don't know how to grapple you're a fish out of water. -
Getting choke in guard
striking_cobra replied to K4j4 S1n1s's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
you know what happens when you assume... our teacher makes everyone fight everyone...(ie the 110 pound girls do get matched up with the 250 lb guys) if they ever have to use their skills in a real situation, it probably won't be against someone as small as they are... -
Help!!
striking_cobra replied to Kajukenbofighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i dissagree with you guys on the dancing part, break dancing could be a big help with bjj as it can help with your coordination on the ground...and bjj teaches you hip movements and body control wich can help with breakdancing... i would consider using one to compliment the other...sort of like cross training...but i suppose every has an opinion and you can agree or dissagree with mine... -

Really a move?
striking_cobra replied to RedLynx's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
sorry spock i don't think there is really a vulcan neck "pinch" lol (it'd sure be cool though hey?) -
i hate to tell you but if you're looking for "street fighting skills" or whatever aikido probably isn't the way for you. i'm not saying that it isn't fun or effective or whatever but you sound like a guy who wants to kick and punch, aikido is a purly defensive martial art i would suggest something like tai boxing...that's just my advice but then again...who am i?

Sport, street fighting, and personal growth....
striking_cobra replied to YODA's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
that really was a great article, i agree completly with the part where it talked about "dorks in cammo with knives" (i know guys like that!) one of them even started training with a "kung fu master" so he says and now he claims he can beat anyone any time...(i just let that go...if he wants to fantasize who am i to stop him?) also i wanted to address the part that mentioned slightly altering techniques for street fighting...i train bjj (you may or may not know) and every now and again our teacher will demonstrate where different strikes might be more practicle (than going for submission) in a "real" fight. i give this thread two thumbs up -
cool website thanks...
