Too nice while sparring???
striking_cobra replied to shotochem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
dude, trust me i found out recently that noone is impossible to move...my sensei showed me some sweeps that work better on big guys than they do on little guys you just gotta be able to use that weight against them... -

lol angus that's pretty funny -
brazillian jiu jitsu is a fine martial art for self defense...i teaches great offense and defense from the ground...neutralizing an inexperienced opponent one on one becomes quite easy for the bjj pratitioner...for multiple opponents i'd rather stay standing if possible though...i give a for thai boxing as well...(though i really think you would do well learning bjj...but i am predisposed to saying that since i love it so much.)

Requirements for Being Grand Master
striking_cobra replied to Taokara's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i think that the "grand master" status is kind of hokey actually...anyone skilled enough to lay claim to the title would be wise enough to realize that learning never stops and noone can truly be a "master" of anything they only appear to be a master in the eyes of people less skilled. and phantasmatic....you crazy lol -
pressure points are very effective but they all don't work against everyone...i know of a few people who are "dead from the neck up" as one of my instructors liked to say... the mandibular angle (ppt behind the jawbone below the ear.) and the hypoglossal (under the jaw near the chin.) had no effect whatsoever no matter how hard they were pressed. some people are just immune to different pressure points. weird huh?

striking_cobra replied to dbalsdon's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
we don't use any pads at all how tough is that! lol it's alittle different for us though since we don't use any strikes either. not that that's really a limitation since i study bjj. -
??help
striking_cobra replied to Sutton_uk's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
balance to a kickboxer is really important...especially in a no holds bard fight when you might have to go up against grapplers. we train to take down kickers and it's all the easier if you can't stand up to begin with -
i agree with alot of the guys in here in the sense that boxing is a good thing...but as a practitioner of brazillian jiu jitsu i can also say that boxing has some obvious weaknesses moreso even than the other "stand up" martial arts. for the simple fact you don't have to watch out for feet, shins, knees, elbows, just two little hands... that's just why i say, maybe something to think about...

striking_cobra replied to g's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training

Belt Ranking
striking_cobra replied to SuperMinh's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
i have never done kickboxing but i do practice brazillian jiu jitsu and i think the belt systems in martial arts are very helpfull to the students. i think it gives a student alot of pride... sort of physical proof of how they are progressing. i know the first time i got promoted i was grinning for days. even though i was at basically the same skill level as the day before i felt so different.
