ghetto blocks?
patusai replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
How many styles out there say or suggest that they are the ultimate fighting style? No too long ago karate itself was suggested as the ultimate fighting style. Fact is, be it karate, TKD, Kung Fu, or streetfighting that you give a fancy name to, it is only as good as the person using it and it is only a way of fighting. Nothing short of a "fighting" style taught by God himself (and He's not in that business) is the ultimate. No disrespect intended. -

How important is lineage in your MA training?

That's a good policy. Some will still test, fail and complain about that. Never-the-less allowing them to test is still a good way to do it. I will say that some instructors who are friends of mine expect too much and some too little. Both, in the end, lose students. Some students go from the overly high expectation instructor to the other and vise versa. Some find something in the middle.

Most of my agressivness in my younger days was due to saving face....sad to say. I was on the losing end or not performing as well as I thought I should against the opponent and agressivley worked to correct the situation. Some say it is the adrenal glands pumping and in some "athletes" it is true and they cannot exhibit the necessary control. In my case, it was pride. I never sparred with non MA friends though.

We use to refer to TKD as ariel foot fighting. Demonstrations with green belts doing flying kicks and breaking boards while flying over Carmen Ghias (small VW for those of you not from my generation).

You can thrust you hand (fingers first) in sand and other substances such as pea graval and such but then I believe that does cause arthritis in the larger finger joints..

Isshin Ryu uses the kata mentioned except for Wanduan, Rohai, Ananko and Patsai. They use Seian, Chinto and Kusanku but not the versions of the kata mentioned. The Isshinryu version of Seisan is, I believe I heard, is clsoe to the Matsumura version. The Kusanku used is Chatan Yara Kusanku ( think that I have this right). The version of Chinto used I am not sure I ever knew. I heard that Shimabuku did at one time have a Passai in his list and some claim to have been taught it and very well may have.

That first form as you get to the site was a variation of an Isshinryu Chinto with variations on some of the techniques and a few added techniques. My 2 cents.

I found that sometimes the problem is that some people see the Black belt as the ultimate prize instead of what it is...a starting point and therefore relate all other bests to that understanding. Belt rank is subjective anyhow. Black belt pretty much means knowing enough to begin learning. It should not matter that any one belt be better in kumite than all or a majority of belts under them. Actually, there are many people without any formal martial arts training that can defeat a lot of modern day masters in a fight. Does that mean that the modern day (and I am talking about respected) masters are not worth their rank? Of course not. There is more to martial arts then being able to defeat your opponent. First rule is not to defeat yourself. IMO

Well done.

The way that my first teacher handled himself as a person ( I worked with him). I had quite a temper before then.

Super_coo, Congrats! Here's wishing you many more belts in the future

Jiin, I belive, is no longer part of JKA...I believe I read that elsewhere. I think the article was titled something like "Shotokan's Forgotten Kata." That is one reason that I practice the kata...although I was not taught the Shotokan version. I believe that Shito Ryu still use this kata...if I am not correct about this please correct me. It, along with Jutte can almost be considered a Jion Sho (or Dai depending on you line of thinking).

First of all I would talk with my instructor. Then, if you still want to go with it you need to start, probably where you are and then build up from there. You end up striking harder and harder items. The first thing that you need to do it toughen the skin with callus. Do you need it? Depends. One thing that I will warn you of is that repeated hitting hard objects for a long period of time will destroy your joints. You increase the possibility of having arthritis. As Isaid. talk to your instructor and then talk with a medical specilist for arthritis to get some more specifics.

Do V-Neck Uniforms Fit Obese People?
patusai replied to liquidkudzu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Let me start by saying...I'm pretty heavy...ok, I'm down right fat!! Anything will fit me but nothing fits me well. Fat people have a difficult time finding anything that fit them well....at least that has been my experiecnce. As for V neck they fit me but unless it is oversized (larger than what I need) it does not fit comfortably. When it is oversized it looks like I'm wearing a tent. Needless to say I don't wear them anymore. Perhaps offer the option? -
dans only - rate your black belt test
patusai replied to Isshinryu_heart's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Oh no, it is I that needs to say sorry. I was not offended. I hit the wron icon..not fully understanding it. Your Sensei is a wise man. Too many people think that a black belt test is some ultimate difficult test. Of course, depending on the person and the physical challenges that they have to deal with, sometimes it is very difficult indeed. Please accept my apology for misleading you. -
Based on the kata mention...it is probaby a combination. Chibana Kusanku is Shorin Ryu and Chibana came well after Matsumura. I agree with a lot of others...ask

I heard once that Jiin and Jutte from Shotokan (and Jiin from Shito ryu and other styles) may have been earlier versions of the Join kata. I also heard that Jiin and Jutte were once one larger kata and broken down into two. I have been taught Jiin and I have no Shotokan background. I learned it from Shorin ryu...but that was a long time ago. Someday I may do some research on this one
