  1. Welcome, nice to see you
  2. Welcome to the forum
  3. Welcome.
  4. welcome. Glad that you are here
  5. Welcome
  6. A lot of masters adjusted kata to adapt to student's handicaps and physical inabilities. Not sure if Funakoshi had this done or did this but others have and still do
  7. kinda like Sensei day care
  8. Yes. I am not sure if the instructor still does it but about 10 years ago he did. Kinda like a family thing
  9. I started in a guys basement. From there we moved to a American Legion hall. I have know guys who started in a garage. As a matter of fact I believe that one of the Isshin ryu American masters started his school in his garage out West. The name escapes me now. Why do you ask?
  10. SatyagrahaKF, there needs to be more people like you. The problem in the Dojo and in other places is that there are not enough people like you.
  11. hands and feet. Nobody can take them away and use them on you
  12. Funakoshi never promoted anyone higher than 5th dan is hwat I heard.
  13. Thank you both
  14. You'd probably end up like Ali. Hits to the head are never good. Frequent hits to the head cause damage down the road. Not telling anyone anything that they do not know.
  15. 10 years with some time off in the center of it all
  16. You make a good point. KArate in general has probably been watered down to be more acceptable in the modern society.
  17. I hear that a lot of masters were "thugs" and they practiced their art and perfected it in the streets. I did not know that Funakoshi was one of them.
  18. Agreed. It does not matter if a student ends up to be a good fighter. As Funakoski suggested the goal of karate is perfection of the character of the karateka.
  19. I believe that was Chosin Chibana. I am sure that there were others. Tatsuo Shimabuku apparently did the same thing )of course part of that may have been because he refined his kata from earlier teachings to later teachings.
  20. Each instructor teaches their own way. it is not for me to question his training. video can assist in training but usually that is after the teaching of the kata has taken place. It is more for review. One of my instructors gave me a film of the kata that I was taught and this was used for review since, in time, we forget. This was used to help me maintain correct kata. From the video I too saw suttle differences in what I thought I originally learned and what was showing on the video. I suppose that there are a few reasons for that. As I said, usually kata is taught first and video (or still photos) were used for review...but this was as far back a 30-35 years ago. Perhaps with technology times and training methods change. I can see the advantage but I can also see a disadvantate too. I suppose it depends if you are comfortable with this form of learning. Good luck
  21. Sometimes instructors make the test a lot more difficult than necessary. Rank is based on technique, understanding, performance, etc. You don't have to come back with broken fingers or large bruizes. Shodan test should be memorable and somewhat tough considering that once a person reaches near that point they should have the necessary skills and such to pass the test. Just my opinion
  22. SubGrappler You are correct. My mistake.
  23. Oh no! Math!!!
  24. Full contact means techniques delivered during sparring at full force...ho holding back no control of technique.
  25. I have not enountered it in the class but I did encountered racist remarks and comments and such at tournament back in the early 70's.
