  1. I called him whatever he wanted me to.
  2. There are many good large governing bodies. There are many good small ones too. However, I am afraid that this would turn into something political. The learning and ranking of karate does not need a grand governing body to grant rank or not...at least not at the lower dan levels which it all that it would end up doing. However, they might want to take a look at the higher dan levels. Bottom line would be that if the higher dans all get together to announce a standardization it would not include restructuring and possibly reducing some high dan ranks from say 9th to 6th. It will turn into a high ranking old boy high dan level thing. If there is the concern to restructure then we should start at the very top and move all of the way down. You know as well as I do that this will never happen. How many 10th dans in the USA are there anyhow. Perhaps someone should start a topic to list the 10th dans in the USA. If more people were on this forum I would imagine the list would be as long as all martial arts itself.
  3. Wha???? I have nothing more to say
  4. Control comes with age I think for most. Young guys feel a need to sew their MA oats...so to speak. I wonder what the instructors way when they hear of these stories...or do they?
  5. Maybe the puchups can strengthen fingers enough to go through steel beer cans! Not Aluminium mind you
  6. I don't have a problem with anyone breaking boards. It's not that big if a deal. As for bulsa wood...heck a 12x12 1 inch piece of pine or cedar is not that difficult to break. If you brace the board on two blocks and have an 8 year old put his/her hands on it and lean it it will pretty much break. This is one that is not kiln dried either.
  7. YOu said government body...nope. No way. Sorry
  8. I heard that too. the R sounds like an L. As for Ryu meaning way. Not too sure about that.
  9. 10 levels before black (some old have but not each Kyu level gets a belt. When I started there were three belts before black (white, green and brown). 8 kyu but three belts. They did not have all of the fancy colors at each step. Hey, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It is a moneymaker and, more importantly, it does hold the casual student's interest and shows progress. I waited 2 years to change my white belt to green (no stripes awarded on the white belt either). It did not matter at the time but people like to see progress. It's a motivator. Americans are good at motivating The video indeed was well done. The demonstration itself was exciting...at least I thought so.
  10. It's only one inch pine. but TKD seems to be a bit more flashy in their demonstrations...at least the few that I've seen back in the way day. I can't do it...dont know too many that can so...I am impressed that they can get their bodies to do that...even if it is 1 inch pine
  11. Some like to live dangerously, die young and leave a good looking corpse It must be a generational thing.
  12. Yes indeed a lot of gymnastics involved but the I believe they train their legs. Years ago we referred to TKD as ariel foot fighting. This demonstation simply shows at what level the power and coordination their bodies are at. It was quite spectacular indeed
  13. Good luck. Don't think of it as a test but rather a forum where you can show someone what you know.
  14. Contrats. Don't worry about how hard it is. When you climb a mountain you see first hand how hard the climb is with every step and every stumble. But, when you reach the top and look back you realize it was not that hard and you can see that the view at the top was worth ever step
  15. How big and thick are the boards that you need to break? How many techniques do you need to use? Any restrictions i.e. minimum number with foot techiques and a minimum number with hand techniques and the remainder using either? I have heard of retesting in such a manner. I believe the rank translates to black belt in holding or something like that. My first instructor went through something like this in Japan. However, there was no charges for the next test. Is it necessary? Gee, I don't know. You are what you are when you get there.
  16. Depends on how many belts there are too. Today some have 10 or more belts. When there is just Green, Brown and Black the time between each is significantly longer then when there are 10. Besides, it aint like the old days anymore. Sometimes that's good too but sometimes it is not.
  17. Good luck. Someday soon you will be the one doing the lesson teaching
  18. Contrats...many more to you in the future
  19. Very gymnastic. TKD does use a lot of foot technique. Many years ago I was at a demonstration where TKD green belts were flying over Carmen Ghia's and doing breaking tricks. It was quite impressive to say the least. When we saw the green belts on them it was even more impressive.
  20. Very young age. I am not familiar with him. I assume ke competed in kumite type stuff. I am always concerned and wonder when/ why a MA dies at a young age. Was it something in the training, some contact received in the kumite or just that some people die young. My condolences.
  21. I'm not into TKD but the site was well put together...IMHO They have a lot of different colored belts before black
  22. Even the gi will, in time wear out....they don't last forever. If the salt destroys it a little faster...oh well such is the price one must pay for practicing in such an area. I don't see this as a bad thing. I am sure that gi manufacturers don't see this as a bad thing either
  23. Everyone get agressive true. Having someone there who can ref the...exchange of contacts... properly can save a lot of pain
  24. It kinda sounded like it was something like that.
