  1. Are you saying that martial arts are no good for self-defense? I think that an Irish Stew of martial arts, adjusted to one's own tastes (abilities, strengths, weaknesses) is exactly what I want. Also, I have a feeling that years of training are going to teach me to react quicker, block and dodge faster, and attack better than a self defense seminar. So what is the point of taking a bunch of martial arts if self-defense, tournament fighting, and promoting are all not your goals?
  2. I'm most comfortable with my one-hand folder, and am clumsy, so fixed is a hazard for my typical walking around self.
  3. I have a mizzuno double weave..... it is really sweet. The only time I don't wear it is in the summer on the hottest days because our training area doesnt have air conditioning and it's pretty hot.
  4. yeh, there are band aids specifically for blisters that are relatively sticky and help it heal faster + main medication- they are band aid brand.
  5. Hehe, step past and chuck liddel your opponent to your victory? Sounds nice
  6. Re-reading, I agree with Montana. This definitely sounds like a case of body mechanics. Also, remember that the flexibility of your shoulder and relative height can vary how the technique works between people.
  7. It sounds similar to when I sprained my ankle (the ankle didn't hurt- the top of my foot did). Also, metatarsals (bones there) can break or crack and be obnoxious. Either way, get yourself to a doctor to minimize injury time.
  8. Very cool! Welcome!
  9. Great saying! Zanshin, I can see that if your priority is tournament fighting or just promoting, but if you are going for self-defense, I think finding what works for you from each and using that is the best option. (Some Kajukenbo shining through)
  10. Agreed ps1- That's something to be proud of! I would love to be able to claim rank in such a system!
  11. Very cool- I missed it but it sounds like a good article!
  12. I agree, could you try that explanation again?
  13. Yeh, also Shotokan is widespread, and the more widespread an art is, the more variation there is going to be. My old system Seiei Kan was based off of Shotokan, and 5 years is about what it took to get your Shodon if you went strait through.
  14. Welcome Jarad and have a good time!
  15. Hehe, but wouldn't they think of that?!
  16. Yeh, I once worked as a research assistant during the week between my classes, and as a waitress on weekends... it was the suck but at least they didnt ever interfere with one another.
  17. Congrats and good luck with that Shodon!
  18. I was looking for a place for when I visited Japan- the fruits of my labor were this: 1. Most Martial Arts schools in Japan are just as "modernized" as those in America- they are a business and mostly full of children. 2. There are few crazy-serious traditional schools left, and generally you are heading to Okinawa to find them (the origin of most Japanese Karate), not Tokyo 3. They do not want you- no offense- but they are very picky about who can train, you have contact them way ahead of time and give them a good reason to let you train with them. Also, they are disinclined to accept foreigners.
  19. I sparred with someone from a TKD background who said that they weren't Olympic, but I didn't recognize the organization, so possibly there is a Traditional TKD organization out there with dropped hands too, but other than that, my experience has also been the Olympic stylists are the hands down people.
  20. Yeh, but i think that t makes sese for two reasons: 1. Japanese Karate does have its roots in Kung Fu 2. The idea is to effectively defend yourself- if there is a great thing to do in a fight (like a punch) many different cultures would probably come up with the same thing, simply because they have the same tools (human body) and same goals.
  21. Yes! Happy Thanksgiving!
