  1. I was just reading through the forums and noticed that there are two different styles! (I think I've been reading them both as one) What distingishes one from the other?
  2. It's tense as you pull the trigger the first time, because you don't know exactly when along the pulling motion it will actually fire, then, it kicks up and back and is loud. Then you smell the shot.
  3. Yes, there is a Karate Kid 3 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097647/ (There are 4: 1,2,3, and the next kk) Capoeira is very acrobatic and flowing- There is a good show called "Deadly Arts" I think, on FitTV that did an episode on it
  4. I don't know how your insurance works, and that will probably make a difference. Is it near time for an annual checkup? Your parents may be able to work something out. Is one of them in the military? Because the insurance for people in the military is awesome, and they could probably work something out.
  5. Maybe you could try to meet with an instructor at each, or sit in on a class to see if its what you are looking for. A good instructor will be honest about what they expect out of a student and you can gage from there.... On another note, I was doing 3 Martial Arts at 5' 6" 165 some time ago, and one is a very active art. If you are willing to be worn out for a month or so, like you said, I really don't think that it will be that much of a problem.
  6. In competition, you wouldn't want to hurt yourself so that you cannot defend yourself on the street if you need....If, on the street, you hurt yourself because of not streaching, I think that not competing for a while wouldn't be that bad of a trade off for defending ones self. In a real confrontation, you probably will gdt hurt.
  7. HAHAHAHAH Great!!!
  8. Hey It's me again. About the diet and excercise- I would talk to your doctor about it... or just a dr if you know one. My concern is that if you are upping excercise, you may be burning off the carbs and protiens that you want to be turning into muscle. Remember, what works for one person doesnt always work for another, and men and women, especially, work differently. Anyway, since you are young, and still growing along with adding extra activity, it would still be a good idea to work out a "karate body plan" with your doctor. They know best
  9. Sounds to me like Shotokan is more of what you are looking for.
  10. Welcome Russell! Looking forward to your posts!
  11. HAHAHA that's great
  12. Chuck Norris: In 1968, Norris became Middleweight Karate champion (non-contact), a title he held for seven consecutive years. In 1969, he won Karate's triple crown for the most tournament wins of the year, and the fighter of the year award by Black Belt magazine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norris%2C_Chuck Jackie Chan: He's studied MA, but his primary training is is Chinese Opera And I'm not afraid to say it....... Three Ninjas Kick Back!
  13. I second that
  14. What are you looking for in a grappling art? Concentration on throws? Judo Concentration on ground grappling? BJJ Concentration on Join Manipulation? JJJ
  15. Why don't you email both schools and ask if you can sit in on a class? Then you can see which has more of what you are looking for.
  16. Hello and Welcome!!!! I have lived in apartments all of my martial arts life, and I'll tell you, I've had to get kind of creative Sometimes I will practice kata to the point that I can, reajust to a good point in the room, then go back into it. Sometimes I will Just practice the upperbody movements, which I've found gives me more focus on this specifically, and now I do it in the mirror sometime to help me critique myself. 14 is most certainly not too old!!! I did karate from 11-15, then didn't pick any martial arts back up until 19! I'm now 23 and learning all the time. Some things I actually beleive I've learned better because I'm older. I'm sure all the other kids in your dojo remember beginning too (we all had to). Over 5'6" and 114 lbs? Ok, I'm not a nutritionist, but.... IMHO, I think that working out is a great idea. Running will build your endurance and pushups will help build muscle around your arms. Now, 114 at your hight is pretty thin- so I would honestly start a little weight training*, along with increasing my calorie/carbohydrate/protien intake. Now, I know that when I was a 14 year old girl, if someone had told me to eat more calories I would have just stared at them in dismay, but, girls don't have the protective muscle over their bones naturally like guys, so you really may want to think about adding some muscle to prevent injury. To do this, you'll probably need to eat more and work out *If weights or a gym are out of the questions due to money or something, you can do medicine ball work (most of it) with an UNOPENED package of flower (I'd wrap it in plastic wrap first), you can start out with bottles of soda - drink the soda and fill the bottles with sand/ dirt from outside, and that should work for a start (tape shut the top) Once all these become easy for you, look for things that you can use around your house, or just increase your reps.
  17. here is my opinion, im kind of a health nut and i found that you shouldnt really eat less but just change the way you eat. by all means eat the same amount of food you eat now just eat stuff low in fat and calories and high in carbs (some say carbs are bad but i disagree, they are an excellent source of fuel) and high in protein as far as excercising you should do something that gets your heart pumping at a pretty good rate for about 30-40 mins (practice martial arts at a fast rate, jog or run, i dont prefer walking cause it doesnt get your heart pumping enough, even jump roping is good) going to TKD will definitely help as cardio work. make sure you keep lifting weights and doing strength exercises cause you dont want to lose muscle mass you just fat i hope i helped good luck Yes! Yes! Excersise at a good rate (jogging or biking, etc) for 30-40 mins once a day will allow for a good eater to get into shape. I'd up that walking on the treadmill to running. Also, if you keep the excersising up and go to martial arts, carbing up will be good.
  18. Welcome! I'm looking forward to your posts!!!
  19. Hehe, sorry, not illeagal like a person will sue you- I meant in most tournaments you'll find.
  20. To warm up we do some very quick reps of standing techniques We work on a technique, then a counter for it, then a counter for the counter or We work on a technique, an extension of that technique, and a counter for that We do standing work the first part of class, then groundwork, using one of the above schemes (or something similar) then we roll/fight for the end of class
  21. I know that for some people the videos can be great supplements.
  22. Hey! Welcome!
  23. I think that 10-yr-old boys get into fights, and that it's good that he can defend himself. I would, however, go to him and have a "don't fight unless you have too...but if you do have to, do it well" (I think someone said that before, but its important) talk with him.
  24. Insurance is good. If its too expesive, there are programs to help. I know this sounds like a pain, but physically go down to the local welfare office (even if you don't feel like you need their services), and chat with them about what you have and what you want. They may have assistance.
